Is ploughing & ridging necessary for a virgin land?

Which plants are d best 2 use for mixed farming wt plantain farming?

The best spacing is 2.5m*2.5m
Ploughing is necessary,ridging is not all that important.
Watermelon,cucumber,pepper and tomato can be intercropped with plantain.
