Nigeria: BUHARI MEETS SERVICE CHIEFS TODAYS OVER BOKO HARAM.

The fate of all the Service Chiefs will be determined today as indications emerged, yesterday, that President Muhammadu Buhari, in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces will meet with them.

Sources said the main agenda will be the battle against terrorism and the relocation of Command and Control Centre of the military to Maiduguri, Borno State capital. It was gathered that the Service Chiefs may be asked to voluntarily retire from service to give way to new appointees.

According to the source, the plan of President Buhari to relocate the Command and Control Centre to Maiduguri in order to put an end to terrorism did not receive the support of the military high command, hence he needs those who would be ready to work in line with his thinking.

Last Friday, the President in his inaugural speech said victory over the Boko Haram would remain a mirage unless the Command and Control Centre (service chiefs) is relocated to the theatre of operation.

He had said: "The most immediate is Boko Haram insurgency. Progress has been made in recent weeks by our security forces but victory cannot be achieved by basing the Command and Control Centre in Abuja.

"The command centre will be relocated to Maiduguri and remain until Boko Haram is completely subdued. But we cannot claim to have defeated Boko Haram without rescuing the Chibok girls and all other innocent persons held hostage by insurgents. This government will do all it can to rescue them alive."

7th Division already in Maiduguri

Already, the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army, created by former Army chief, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd), commanded by a General Officer Commanding, and made up of two brigades and seven battalions of about 900 officers and soldiers per battalion is in Maiduguri. They are backed by the 3rd Armoured Division of the Nigerian Army with headquarters in Jos, Plateau State.

Military sources express reservations

Though President Buhari's speech was hailed by many people, military sources, who spoke with some journalists, yesterday, in Abuja expressed reservations about the directive which they see as an "attempt to frustrate and humiliate our chiefs before sacking them.

"Some of us have analyzed the speech and our conclusion is that President Buhari did not appreciate the efforts put in place in fighting the terrorists. In the whole speech, he did not commend us at all but instead seemed to agree with the cynics that we have not been observing human rights in our operations.

"He went further to praise our counterparts in the neighbouring countries who are not in the theatre of operation but were encouraged only to help block their borders to prevent the terrorists from escaping to re-mobilise. As if that was not enough, President Buhari said he wants our Command and Control Centre relocated to Maiduguri. What for?

"We are involved in about nine operations in the country now. If the directive is carried out, then our focus will primarily be on terrorism at the expense of other criminal activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, piracy, pipeline vandalism and others."

Directive alien in military operations

According to the source, "Such a directive is alien in military operation anywhere in the world. It is an attempt to frustrate, humiliate our chiefs before sacking them. How do you ask our service chiefs to be in the same place with their commanders? Where is the respect? If he wants them to go, he should simply tell them; rather, he is coming with a blackmail so that he would say he wanted them to remain but they ignored his order so that they might be subjected to humiliation and frustration before kicking them out of the service."

Asked if the service chiefs have met with the President over the issue, our source explained that Buhari did not speak with them before giving the order.

"How will they meet him without his invitation and if it is tomorrow they would be meeting him for briefing, we don't know; may be he would ask them to go or ask them to obey his directive before kicking them out," the source said.

The service chiefs who came into office on January 16, 2014 are Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Kenneth Minimah; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu; and Naval Chief, Vice Admiral Jibrin Usman.

Meanwhile, the President held a closed door meeting with the National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) at Defence Headquarters, yesterday. Details of the meeting were not made available as the NSA refused to comment on the subject of the meeting.

Buhari to visit Niger, Chad, Wednesday, Thursday
Also, President Mohammadu Buhari will on Wednesday and Thursday visit the Republics of Niger and Chad respectively.
The trip which would be Buhari's first since he assumed office on May 29 was yesterday confirmed to Journalists by his spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu.

According to Shehu, Buhari will first visit Niger on Wednesday, pass the night there before proceeding to Chad republic on Thursday.

"The president has Niger and chad ahead of him. This will be his first trip outside the country in obvious matters of security", he said.

President Buhari in his speech vowed to make the war against terror a cardinal Programme of his administration. He said, "Boko Haram is a typical example of small fires causing large fires. An eccentric and unorthodox preacher with a tiny following was given posthumous fame following his extra judicial murder at the hands of the police. Since then through official bungling, negligence, complacency or collusion, Boko Haram became a terrifying force taking tens of thousands of lives and capturing several towns and villages covering swathes of Nigerian sovereign territory.

"Boko Haram is a mindless, godless group who are as far away from Islam as one can think of. At the end of the hostilities when the group is subdued the Government intends to commission a sociological study to determine its origin, remote and immediate causes of the movement, its sponsors, the international connections to ensure that measures are taken to prevent a recurrence of this evil.

"For now the Armed Forces will be fully charged with prosecuting the fight against Boko haram. We shall overhaul the rules of engagement to avoid human rights violations in operations.

"We shall improve operational and legal mechanisms so that disciplinary steps are taken against proven human right violations by the Armed Forces. Boko Haram is not only the security issue bedeviling our country. The spate of kidnappings, armed robberies, herdsmen/farmers clashes, cattle rustlings all help to add to the general air of insecurity in our land."

Boko Haram releases new video… but Shekau is absent

Islamic terrorist sect, Boko Haram, has released a new 10-minute long video on Youtube.

In the new video which had on it the logo “Islamic State in West Africa”, Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau is noticeably absent.

The spokesperson in the video, which was released on Tuesday, June 1, claimed they still had authority over Dikwa, Gamboru, Damasak and other areas where the Nigerian Army claimed to have liberated.

The spokesperson swore in Allah’s name that they were filming from Sambisa forest.

“I swear by Allah that I am talking right now from Sambisa. Here in Sambisa you can travel more than four to five hours under the black flag of Islam by car or by motorbike.”

The speaker, who had his face shielded by a headscarf, described called Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, as “the lying coalition partners”, adding that “Most of our territory is still under our control.”

Speaking in Hausa, he said: “The armies claim through the media that they captured our towns and that they assaulted Sambisa (forest) and defeated us,” he said, referring to the bushland area in Nigeria’s northeast Borno state that has been an Islamist stronghold.”

“I swear by Allah that I am talking right now from Sambisa. Here in Sambisa you can travel more than four to five hours under the black flag of Islam by car or by motorbike. We are uncountable in Sambisa. We are thousands of Mujahedeen here.”

FULLY WEOPONIZED SPARTAN MK III APC !

This is a light armoured vehicle, ideally for tactical use by police forces. It is not fit for the purposes of COIN in a hostile environment like the NE with the possibility of IED's and the ever present threat of a fire fight confrontation with Boko technicals.

There is no target acquisition soft ware and or FLIR, so your essentially shooting with steel very inaccurate sights, although you have some control of the heavy recoil comparative to the boko technicals you still need to come a lot closer to get a kill. That leaves you exposed as you probably know the armour is just STANAG level 1, I'm sure you know what that means.

If you intend to carry out search and destroy missions in the NE, ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT to weed out Boko, it is imperative that our forces have clear cut composite advantage. Most of those operations should be carried out at night using precision weaponry, speed and the element of surprise.

I believe that our officers are informed, intelligent and up to date, why then are we not procuring the right weaponry to win this war and stop sacrificing our gallant soldiers like chickens when we can do so much better.

To some extent I disagree with you and these are my points

1; compring these mk3 apc with it's shikla double barrel gun and with its STANAG level to the BH soft skinned toyota hilux chord/nsv/Dshk technical is no match to it, if deployed in engagement tactically by our officers in battle field as compared to the NA toyota hilux .

2; secondly talking about target acquisation software and FLIR'Ss capability, even our second hand T-72's does not av such capabilities even the NAF does not av such capabilities. But shall u fold ur arm and look BH destroy us further.

3; lastly, av seeing enough MK-III spartan on the ukraine crises conflict, some weaponized like the picture I posted and some armed with guided rocket/missile and Talking about target acquisation and FLIR Capabilities, these are more precision weaponry which we do not have for now. But I strongly believe with the recent procurement in the army now and weaponized MK-III if deployed tactically it will be a game changer compared to the toyota hilux !

THE ABAGANA AMBUSH : THE GREASTEST BATTLE OF THE NIGERIA - BIAFRAN WAR.

THE OGBUNIGWE BOMB: commonly known as Ogbunigwe
during the Biafran war, its fame and mystique traveled
wide on both sides of the divide. Considered a
technological breakthrough of Igbos during the war, the
bomb, which may well be a higher version of today’s
I.E.Ds (improved explosive device) was deployed to great
effect by the Biafran army.

With the economic blockade of Biafra having a telling effect, the people turned inwards, devising survival strategies and apparatuses. Apart from extracting and refining their own petrol; they also had improvised armoured tanks and piloted their planes. The renowned Professor Godian Ezekwe led a team of scientists in what was known as the Biafran Research and Production Unit,RAP. This think-tank group is said to have developed rockets, bombs and telecommunications gadgets. According to Achebe, quoting another great author,Professor Chukwuemeka Ike, the ogbunigwe was put to so much devastating effect against the federal troops that the fear of the explosive was the beginning of wisdom for them; to the extent that the Biafrans succeeded more with it than any imported weapons. Ike in his book, Sunset at Dawn: A Novel about Biafra, captures it thus: “You must have heard that the Nigerians are now so mortally afraid of Ogbunigwe that each advancing battalion is now preceded by a herd of cattle.”Boasting about this feat in what is regarded his last official wartime speech, Ojukwu said: “ in three years of war,
necessity gave birth to invention… we built bombs,
rockets, and we designed and built our own refinery, and
our own delivery systems and guided them far. For three
years, blockaded without hope of import, we maintained
all our vehicles.
“The state extracted and refined petrol, individuals refined
petrol in their back gardens. We built and maintained our
airports, we maintained them under heavy bombardment… we spoke to the world through a telecommunications system engineered by local ingenuity.“In three years, we had broken the technological barrier, became the most advanced black people on earth.”

THE ABAGANA AMBUSH: March 25, 1968 probably remains
one of the most memorable days in the Nigeria –Biafra
war. It was the day the Nigerian side suffered the heaviest
single loss in the war. Known as the Abagana Ambush, the
Second Division of the Nigerian Army led by Col. Murtala
Muhammed had finally crossed the Niger Bridge after
failing in the first attempt (having been repelled by the
Col. Joe Achuzia’s guerrilla army and suffering heavy
casualties). Having crossed into Biafra, the plan was to link
up with the First Division led by Col. Shuwa penetrating
the Igbo heartland through the north from Nsukka. As
Achebe notes: “The amalgamation of these two forces, the
Nigerian Army hoped, would then serve as a formidable
force that would ‘smash the Biafrans’”. Col. Muhammed
was said to have assembled and deployed, a convoy of 96
vehicles and four armoured cars to facilitate this plan on
March 31, 1968.
However, Biafran intelligence was said to have got wind of
the move and a Major Jonathan Uchendu was charged
with working out a counter-attack strategy. With a 700-
man team, a counter- attack plan was hatched that
essentially sealed up the Abagana Road while the troops
lie in ambush in a nearby bush waiting patiently for the
advancing Nigerians and their reinforcements.
Achebe writes that “Major Uchendu’s strategy proved to be
highly successful. His troops destroyed Muhammed’s
entire convoy within one and half hours. All told, the
Nigerians suffered about 500 casualties. There was
minimal loss on the Biafran side.” It was probably the
most resounding battle ever won by the Biafrans in the
entire war.
ACHEBE, OKIGBO AND MAJOR IFEAJUNA: Christopher
Okigbo, the cerebral poet and Achebe had known from
their Government College, Umuahia days. Though Okigbo
was two years junior to Achebe in class, they struck up
friendship very quickly and maintained the closeness till
Okigbo’s tragic end in the war front. After Umuahia, they
were to meet again at the University College, Ibadan, and
while Achebe was in the Nigerian Broadcasting Service in
Ikoyi , Lagos, Okigbo was West Africa manager for
Cambridge University Press. Their friendship was such
that Okigbo was godfather to one of Achebe’s sons and on
many occasions during the ensuing tumult in Igboland,
Okigbo played ‘father ‘ role to the Achebe house- hold.
When the war was in full force and all the Igbo
personalities had returned, Enugu was the natural
settlement for most of the elite returnees in the early days
before the ancient town was bombed into submission by
the federal forces. It was in Enugu; precisely on Michael
Okpara Avenue, that Achebe and Okigbo set up their
publishing outfit called Citadel Press. It was indeed the
idea of Okigbo who thought out and even worked out the
whole project before getting Achebe to come on board.
The crux of it all was to publish educational materials,
including children’s books and books that would capture
the ongoing crisis.
The first book Citadel Press worked on was, “How the Dog
Became a Domesticated Animal,” by John Iroaganachi.
Achebe and Okigbo chose to rework the folktale and turn
it around to become, “How the Leopard got its Claws.” This
book never got to see the light of the day before the
shelling of Enugu became unbearable and most people
had to scamper and relocate further into the hinterland.
While Citadel still functioned, Okigbo had brought a
manuscript from Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna, one of the
five majors who plotted the January 1966 coup. The twain
were thoroughly disappointed with Ifeajuna’s account of
that critical event of Nigeria’s life. Hear Achebe: “I read the
treatise through quickly and became more and more
disappointed as I went along. Ifeajuna’s account
showcased a writer trying to pass himself off as something
that he wasn’t. For one, the manuscript claimed that the
entire coup d’etat was his show, that he was the chief
strategist, complete master mind, and executer, not just
one of several. He recognized the presence of his
coconspirators but did not elevate their involvement to
any level of importance.”
Chukwuma Nzeogwu, one of the chief protagonists of the
January 1966 coup called the manuscript a lie while
Achebe and Okigbo thought it too irresponsible to deserve
publication. The manuscript was later to vanish to the
regret of Achebe who thought it could have been
preserved at least as a version of what transpired on that
fateful January of 1966. Christopher Okigbo who had
become a Major in the Biafran army was to be felled in
the war front in August 1967, in Ekwegbe, close to Nsukka.
Achebe who had fled from Enugu under the hale of
shelling returned to Citadel Press after the war to find the
small building reduced to ruble. It was instructive that a
number of buildings in the vicinity had been unscathed by
the conflict, but this one was pummeled to the ground. It
was the work of someone or some people with an ax to
grind, he thinks. TOMORROW: THE ECONOMIC BLOCKADE
AND STARVATION; EPILOGUE

1st pic is a makeshift Biafra Radio in Obodo-Ukwu; it

MILITARY EQUIPMENT, MORE TROOPS ARRIVE MAIDUGURI.

Military equipment and soldiers on Thursday rode gallantly into Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, apparently to prepare the ground for senior officers in the military following the relocation of the Command headquarters to the state to strengthen its base in the fight against Islamic Sect, Boko Haram.

DAILY POST gathered that, about 1,700 troops have since arrived the capital since the pronouncement of President Muhammadu Buhari during his inaugural speech.

A soldier, who was not authorized to speak to the press said, they were hoping for better days because President Buhari being a former military officer knows exactly what should be done, especially with regard to the welfare of soldiers

Speaking on the ongoing fight against Boko Haram insurgents, he said, “The truth is, it would take longer time than expected to deal completely with the issue of Boko Haram, more especially that they have links with other terrorists organization across the globe. But with sustained vigor, we can minimize their attacks.”

Major General Buratai: From fighting oil theft to battling Boko Haram

Major-General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, who was appointed as the commander of the Multi-National Joint Task Force on the fight against insurgency in the North-East may be on a familiar turf, considering the fact that he had had a successful outing in the creeks of the Nigeria Delta.
The multi-national task force was announced last week after President Buhari met with the leaders of Niger Republic, Chad and Cameroon in a measure that is seen as an attempt to deal a decisive blow to Boko Haram fighters, who have held the North-East region down in a bloody campaign in the last five years.
Though the Nigerian military sacked the sect members from many communities and stormed the Sambisa Forest, which was Boko Haram’s fortress before the last general elections, the sect has since launched a renewed attack using suicide bombers on Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States since President Buhari was sworn in on May 29. Not less than 100 Nigerians have lost their lives in the first week of the current administration.
The new Commander of the Multi-National Joint Task Force, which has its headquarters in Ndjamena, Chad, comes from a community that has suffered greatly from the brutal menace of the Boko Haram sect. Major-General  Buratai hails from Buratai town in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State. It would be recalled that Biu local government has come under severe attacks by Boko Haram. For instance, an attack on Buratai in March this year led to the death of as many as 25 persons.
Born on November 24, 1960, Major General Buratai started his military career after he was admitted into the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, in Kaduna in 1980 as a member of the 29th Regular Course. He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant on December 17, 1983 to the Infantry Corps. He joined the army with a Teachers’ Grade II Certificate, which he obtained with distinction. He later attended the National Defence College, Bangladesh.  Currently Major General Buratai hold two Master’s degrees,  one in History from the University of Maiduguri  and another in Philosophy from the Bangladesh University of Professional, Dhaka.
The general attended professional military training, like the Anti-Tank Platoon Commanders’ Course in 1986, Young Officers Course, Infantry, Junior Command and Staff Course, JSSC, in 1994 at Armed Forces Command and Staff College, AFCSC, Jaji. He then attended the Senior Command and Staff Course 1999/2000 at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, all in Jaji.
Furthermore, Major General Buratai  attended the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Course in the year 2000 at Cornwallis Park, Nova Scotia, Canada, and attended the United Nations Staff and Logistics Officers Course, India.
Moreover, before rising to the rank of General, he served in different capacities in command, staff and instructional appointments. He was Battalion Second-in-Command 81 Battalion (Operation Harmony Bakassi), he was promoted as General Staff Officer Grade 1 (GSO1) training and Operations Army Headquarters Garrison, Lagos and Directing Staff, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji - Nigeria.

He was at the headquarters of the Infantry Corps Centre as Assistant Chief of Staff before his promotion to the Rank of Brigadier General in 2009. He later became the Director, Department of Land Warfare, DLW, at the Armed Forces Command and Staff Collage Jaji. His tenure at the DLW witnessed a number of transformations, which included the present design of the headquarters of the section of the armed forces. He was later promoted to the position of Commandant 2 Brigade Port Harcourt and Sector 2 Commander Joint Task Force (otherwise known as Operation Pulo-Shield), before he was promoted to his present rank of Major General in 2012.
As a Major General, he was made the Commandant, the Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI), Jaji. He was later transferred as the Director of Procurement at the Defense Headquarters, Abuja before his present tasking appointment as the Commandant of the Multi-National Joint Task Force.
When he was the Commander 2 Brigade Port Harcourt and Sector Commander Joint Task Force Operation Pulo Shield, Major-General Buratai brought about improved security in Rivers and Bayelsa States, improved the fight against oil theft, piracy, kidnapping and armed robbery. He also greatly improved the barracks infrastructure in Port Harcourt. Several officers’/soldiers’ accommodations were renovated and new blocks of accommodation for officers and soldiers were built. During his stay in Rivers State, there was an improved civil-military relationship.
As the director, Department of Land Warfare in the Armed Forces Command and Staff College in 2010,  he transformed the department with improved infrastructure, improved teaching and learning facilities.  And as Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry Jaji, lots of improvements were witnessed during his tenure. Several students’ accommodations were renovated. Chief Instructors’ offices were renovated and furnished. New student hostels were built. Training activities were greatly enhanced. The multinational force which Major General Buratai will command consists of 8,700 soldiers from Nigeria, Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon and Benin Republic. It is charged with battling Boko Haam in the Lake Chad region.
Speaking on the force, President Buhari mentioned that other nations would contribute weapons to help restore the infrastructure destroyed by the insurgents.
The new president had added that, “My administration will bring new impetus and a renewed commitment to the efforts to wipe out the menace of the Boko Haram insurgents. As a first step we have directed the relocation of the command post of the counter-insurgency operations to Maiduguri until such a time that the insurgency is completely defeated.”
General Buratai whose hobbies include farming, squash racket and jogging, is faced with the task of leading the troops to achieve this lofty objective. Boko Haram has killed over 13,000 Nigerians, by official estimate, and has led to the displacement of over one million others, many of them living in camps in the North-East, many states in Nigeria and in neighbouring countries.
