Buhari Effect: Nigerian Army Moves Base to Maiduguri

In obedience to an order given by President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian army has moved its base to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

All service chiefs are expected to move tomorrow; Tuesday. The move was announced via a statement issued by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman and made available to our Correspondent in Maiduguri on Monday.

The statement said, ''In compliance with Presidential pronouncement and the Chief of army Staff’s directive, a reconnaissance and advance team for the establishment of Military Command and Control Centre (MCCC) for Operation Zaman Lafiya for the fight against terrorism and insurgency has moved to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

''The team, which is led by a Two -Star General, has already commenced work in earnest and it is comprised of elements of the officer of the Chief of Army Staff, all the relevant Army Headquarters Departments and other combat support components. The centre will serve as a forward command base for the Chief of Army Staff and other service chiefs. The centre is essentially an elaboration of an already existing Army Headquarters Command and Control arrangement. From now on, the fight against terrorism and insurgency would be monitored, coordinated and controlled from this centre.

''I wish to inform you also that its establishment would not create another layer of Command structure but would add impetus and renewed vigour to Operation Zaman Lafiya, all aimed at bringing terrorism and insurgency to an end. However, an alternate command centre is also being established in Yola, the Adamawa state capital of the north east''.

"TASK FORCE 777"

In 1972, Egyptian President Anwar as-Sadat exiled more than 30,000 Soviet advisors and began moving towards peace
with Israel and closer ties with the west. Egyptian
intelligence began receiving word that groups such as the
Abu Nidal Faction and Popular Front for the Liberation of
Palestine had vowed to take violent action against Egyptian
targets and people. Because of this threat, the Egyptian
Army was tasked with creating a unit capable of counter-
terrorist and hostage rescue operations.
In 1977, Egypt's Task Force 777 was created. Initially, this
unit was staffed by 3 officers, four NCOs, and forty
operators. Soon after, they were thrust into battle
unprepared in the Libyan desert. They had no order of
battle, no experience and little organization.
Then, in 1978 they were dispatched to assault an airplane
hijacked by the PFLP ( Popular Front for the Liberation of
Palestine) and flown to Cyprus. Having only an hour to plan
while in the air they were unprepared. Then, the Egyptian
Ministry of Defense neglected to inform the Cyprus
authorities of TF 777's imminent arrival. The local police and
Guard units thought the assaulting commandos were
terrorist reinforcements and took TF 777 under fire. An 80
minute firefight that cost the lives of 15 777 operators and
several Cyprots ensued.
TF 777's most notorious operation though, was the botched
rescue attempt at Malta. Palestine Radicals, angered over
Egypt's failure to protect the fleeing Achille Lauro terrorists,
seized Egyptair flight 648 ( ironically, the same airplane that
had been used to transport the Achille Lauro terrorists out
of Egypt ) and flew it to Luga Int. Airport in Malta. This time,
Egypt made sure that the foreign government new TF 777
was coming.
The members of TF 777 however, made several errors. First, they failed to perform any surveillance of the ground
situation. Second, they failed to debrief hostages that had
survived a botched execution attempt. Third, they didn't
study blueprints of the Boeing 737. Fourth, they did not have stun grenades. Lastly, TF 777 operators elected to blow a hole in the roof to gain entry to the 737.
In order to stun the terrorists and gain time for operators to enter through the hole in the roof, the explosive charge was increased beyond recommended levels. The blast was so powerful SIX rows of seats were knocked loose and nearly twenty passengers were killed. Then members who entered though the doors began throwing smoke grenades and firing indiscriminately. Snipers positioned on top of rescue vehicles began firing at fleeing civilians. In all, the botched operation killed 57 hostages.
Understandably, Unit 777 has kept a low profile since this
incident. They have been involved in Egypt's civil war against the "Brotherhood" and have lost several operators in this conflict. Because of the secrecy now surronding the unit, the exact weaponry used today is not known. However, because of close contact with the US military, who supplies much of their trainig, it is reasonable to assume they are using much of the same weapons US teams use.
Force 777 is based near Cairo with a fleet of Mi-8 and
Westland command helicopters ready for immediate
deployment 24 hours a day. They have recieved training
from the American SFOD-Delta and SEAL Team 6 units
( Before ST 6 was shut down ) as well as from France's GIGN
and possibly Germany's GSG-9.

Below are few pictures of the "task 777" special force !

FG orders re-opening of Maiduguri airport

Michael Olugbode in Maiduguri with agency report¨
Soldiers from Chad killed 207 Boko Haram militants in
fighting on Tuesday near a Nigerian town close to the border with Cameroun, Chad’s army announced in a statement.
This came as about 15 persons were said to been killed
when Islamic sect attacked a remote village in Borno,
opening fire and burning homes to the ground, three
residents told AFP.
“We have so far lost 15 people and one was injured,” said
Bukar Zira, who fled the village of Huyum in the Askira-Uba
district of Borno State as the militants moved in on Monday
afternoon.
Meanwhile, one Chadian soldier was killed and another nine were wounded in the clashes near Gambaru, the scene of regular attacks by the Nigerian Islamist group in recent
months. There was no immediate independent verification
of the Chadian army’s announcement.
According to Reuters, Chad’s military also claimed to have
seized large quantities of small arms and ammunition and
two pick-up trucks. Niger, Cameroun and Chad have launched a regional military campaign to help Nigeria defeat the Boko Haram insurgency, which aims to carve an Islamic emirate out of North-eastern Nigeria.
Chad deployed troops last month in support of. Camerounian efforts to stop repeated cross-border raids by
the Islamists, whose operations increasingly threaten
Nigeria’s neighbours.
The African Union last month authorised the creation of the
regional force, which will also include Benin, and is pushing
for a UN Security Council mandate for the operation.
The killings are are coming on the heels of an order by the
federal government for the re-opening of the Maiduguri
International Airport for commercial activities.
The airport was closed for commercial activities over 18
months after the persistent attacks by the Boko Haram sect.
The airport was shut down early December, 2013, few days
after the insurgents launched a daring attack on the 79
Composite of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Maiduguri and
destroyed three military helicopters at the base.
Speaking with journalists, the Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Zannah Mustapha, said the federal government resolved to re-open the airport following the seeming security improvement recorded in recent times.
“It is interesting to announce that the Chief of Air Staff, Air
Vice Marshal Adesola Amosu, has confirmed to me that the
federal government issued a directive for the re-opening of
the Maiduguri International Airport for commercial
activities,” the deputy governor declared.
“In fact, the Chief of Air Staff told me that the Nigerian Air
Space Management Agency (NAMA), the Nigerian Civil
Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority
of Nigeria (FAAN), were already directed to work out
modalities for the effective resumption of flights,” he added.
Zannah revealed that for commercial activities to kick start.
Med View Airlines has announced its decision to fully
commence flight from Maiduguri en route Abuja-Kano and
Jeddah.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshall Amosu, however told journalists that the closure and re-opening of the airport had little to do with the Nigerian Air Force as it was in the jurisdiction of FAAN and NCAA.
He revealed that the airport might be temporarily closed
from time to time if need be.

This is the Polish Beryl M762 chambered with 7.62 X 39mm its essentially an upgraded AK47 with a picatinny rail and an improved butt stock, that should considerably control the recoil and allow for better accuracy. However that will not increase the range or change the impact or velocity of the 7.62mm bullet even with an optical sight. The effective range in battle condition remains the same no more than 150 metres in the hands of an experienced operative.

Consider that the Beryl Karabinek wz. 96 5.56x45mm was adopted in the late 1990's to replace the AK47 and is Polish army standard issue for its armed forces. Here we are 25 years later still talking about the virtues of the AK47 that most countries including eastern block have left behind.

Its like saying that a Peugeot 404 pick up is better than a Toyota Tundra V8 5.7, because it's easier to maintain, that would be irrational sentimentality.

Superior equipment particularly precision arms give you clear cut overriding advantage and increase your survivability in the battle field. The casualty rate of the NA is simply way way too high amongst other issues is our reliance on the AK47 that doesn't give out troops any clear cut advantage over the enemy. Operation Serval with 4000 French soldiers in Mali literally ousted the Islamic insurgency in a few weeks in an area possibly bigger than the whole of Nigeria. To date French casualties stand at no more than 14 after 2 years and 5 months not even a single officer has been killed.

I am afraid to speculate on how many brave gallant officers have been lost to Boko, hundreds and NCO's its probably at least a thousand.

Costings the Beryl we procured will not be more than $450.00 per unit, however add the possibility of egunje and it will be near $600, Poland has big issues with corruption and our top brass will find them very compliant to sharp practices.

To procure the German super reliable Heckler & Koch G36 will with good diplomatic bargaining cost no more than $500 dollars with twin optical sights per unit, that means 20,000 units will cost $10million add to that a transfer of technology licence 0f $3/5million and we can produce them locally with at least 70% local product content.

Below a video from Andy McNab former somewhat rogue SAS officer widely acknowledged officially and unofficially on the merits of the optical scope and its advantage even for him as an 18yr old combatant in first fire fight in Basra Iraq. Its possible you may consider my anonymous view as being without authority.

Nigeria Army 72 special mobile strike Force; I think the government and our red necks can do better by equipping these guys well with Tactical Ballistic Helmet (TBH), proper webbing and most important The new Rail Attached Communications (RAC) headset .
And why on earth these beryl riffles are not fitted yet with. Dot/periscope sights

this brand of polish beryl used by 72 strike force is toy and modernised OBJ006-AK47. their range is same 300mm. the polish army stopped using that version since the 1990's.... Even if its fitted with Dot/periscope sights, it will still not go far because of the velocity of 7.62×39mm ammunition, it cant go more than 300mm which is still same with OBJ006-AK47, it can't fire more than 11 magazines for 330 rounds
10.12 kg. the only difference is the recoiling issue... they should have purchased the latest one widely used by the polish army which is about 5.45×39mm ammunition and the range is 1000mm.

Nop these are regular soldiers , Nigeria special force"army, airforce & navy" carry tarvor riffles especially for navy and airforce SF and army SF uses beryl and tavor riffles !

Even in the airforce and navy regular combatant soldier they carry tarvor riffles now but the issue with NA is the the number of regular force is large, so let's hope over time that things are got to change !

No bros @bidexiii I disagree with you on this one. Army SF don't use tavor 21, they only use the outdated version of polish beryl which is not even fitted scope rail. its only fitted with folding stock...

Honestly u r right, and as I av always nothing works in a corrupt society. Nigeria army as the second largest army after egypt, it will take time to get rid off, of all those rusted ak's and I think its high time we stop the production of the obj0006 or what's is it called ? We should get a patent right for an israeli ', russian ak or even the beryl riffle that's how to build, sustain and equip an army.
I was happy wen I heard dat the 72 mobile strike force are already with d beryl riffles but wen the pictures started emerging they r not with the rail sight which is very bad what's d essence on spending such amount and they do not come with basic asseceries !
But on the issue of the NA with tarvor riffles aav seeing a lot and I think I'll post NA special force with tarvor riFfles wen I av time I might check my archive ?

I totally diagree with u on these _
Firstly the beryl riffle "wz.2004 Beryl"/M762 is still the latest since 1997 till date ! And that's the type polish army carry till now !
Secondly its maximum effective range is 600mm not 300mm. And what u r saying about the latest version his its ammunition sizes and from the research I made they all av the same range .

The 5.45 is not better than the 7.62 round. It was McNamara a business guy, who decided on the use of the 5.45 as it was cheaper to produce than the 308 (7.62).

As part of requirement in the NATO alliance, all members are to use a common gear, hence the adoption of the 5.45.

The only advantage the 5.45 has over the 7.62 is that it is lighter to carry, hence soldiers can carry more Ammo.

N.A purchasing the 7.62 for the beryl makes perfect sense. It is a more powerful round, and a round they produce.

Soldiers still miss targets at 50m with all the accessories present. Most of the fighting takes place between 150 - 300 meters.

Those beryl's would come with their appropriate accessories. The first batch of 1000 are on evaluation, next set and the more to come would definitely come with scopes as a basic requirement.
