Nigeria’s military on Friday said they had arrested 19 suspected oil militants as they ramp up operations to stop pipeline attacks bringing the country’s economy to a standstill. Troops thwarted an attempt to blow up a pipeline operated by the Nigerian subsidiary of Italy’s Eni and arrested suspected pipeline vandals and oil thieves, it said in a statement. Three coordinators of “several pipeline bombings” were among those detained in operations conducted across the oil-producing southern states of Bayelsa and Delta, it added. “One of the arrested suspects, John Oboka — aka Jamaica — confessed to being part of the group that bombed the Nigerian Petroleum Developing Company (NPDC) crude oil pipeline at Escravos,” said the statement. There was no indication as to whether those arrested were connected to the Niger Delta Avengers, the high-profile group that has claimed a series of attacks on Nigeria’s oil infrastructure since February. The attacks have cut production to an estimated 1.6 million barrels per day, well below the expected 2.2 million bpd, heaping pressure on an economy hit by falling crude prices since mid-2014. Abuja has offered to talk with the Avengers but the militant group has denied reports it has met government representatives. “There is no ideal solution for the federal government, there are just hard and even harder choices to make,” Dirk Steffen, maritime security director at Risk Intelligence in Denmark, told AFP. The security operations “bear the risk of alienating the population in the Delta”, he said. “It can also encourage some armed groups to join the fight on the side of the Avengers to show solidarity.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/nigerian-military-arrests-19-suspected-oil-militants/ |

OPERATION GAMA AIKI: NIGERIAN AIR FORCE INTENSIFIES AIR OPERATIONS TO RID NORTHERN BORNO OF BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has increased the tempo of air strikes in the northeast against the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) in an operation codenamed OPERATION GAMA AIKI. The new phase of offensive by the NAF is an integral part of the ongoing counterinsurgency operation and a follow-up to OPERATION CRACKDOWN launched some months ago with the sole objective of taking over the Sambisa Forest and other BHT strongholds. OPERATION GAMA AIKI is a follow-up to OPERATION CRACKDOWN that was terminated few days ago. It is a collaboration between own Surface Forces and the Multi National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to rid northern Borno, particularly the area around the Lake Chad Basin, of the remnants of BHTs that relocated northward from the south as a result of OPERATION CRACKDOWN. The NAF, since commencement of OPERATION GAMA AIKI few days ago, has intensified air operations in the northeast. As usual, the NAF is undertaking both independent and coordinated offensive air operations including Air Interdiction, Closed Air Support and Armed Reconnaissance to shape the battlespace and provide safe environment for Surface Forces to operate. Other operations undertaking by the NAF include combat air support missions comprising Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Logistics Resupply, Medical Evacuation and liaison missions within the theatre of operation. The overall objective of the ongoing air campaign is to make Nigeria a safe place again.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE ALPHA JET FOILS PLAN TO AMBUSH SURFACE FORCES, KILLS 15 BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS The Air Component of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE has foiled a plan by Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) to ambush own surface forces harboured at Doron Naira, north of Borno State. Earlier today 19 June 2016, a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) King Air A350i Beechcraft aircraft on Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission sighted a group of BHTs in 7 Hilux vehicles hiding under tress at a location along the axis of advance of own ground forces towards Kangarawa, north of Borno State. Following this discovery, an Alpha Jet was scrambled to attack the BHT location. The attack was successful as 15 members of the BHTs were killed and the whole vehicles knocked out. The casualty figure was confirmed by ground forces who subsequently consolidated on the gains of the air effort to pursue and inflict further casualty on the fleeing wounded members of the terrorist group. Troops also confirmed 2 gun trucks were among vehicles destroyed by the Alpha Jet as 2 x AK-47 rifles, 2 x RPGs and cache of assorted munitions were recovered. The latest victory against the BHTs brings to fore the important role of airpower in counterinsurgency operation. In furtherance of this role, the NAF has been relentless in its effort to shape the battlespace and provide favourable environment for own surface forces to operate. The recent deployment of additional platforms to increase the tempo of air operations at the commencement of OPERATION GAMA AIKI is aimed at fostering this objective. The foiled plan to ambush own surface forces by BHTs shows that the air efforts by the NAF has started to yield the desired results.

Somalia Court sentences 43 al Shabaab militants to death A Somalia Court on Saturday sentenced 43 Islamist militants to death in the north-eastern city of Garowe in Puntland region for their role in recent attacks on the region. Abdullahi Hersi Eed, Puntland’s Regional Attorney General said that the court sentenced the militants to death for their role in the attack, which left 24 soldiers dead and another 73 wounded in the region. The militants were members of al-Shabaab, an organisation of Sunni extremists that has been fighting for the domination of Somalia for years. The Islamist insurgents want to set up a theocracy in the country. The sentenced militants were part of 97 al-Shabaab members captured in northern parts of the country. The defendants were given one month to appeal. “All of the defendants admitted their guilt, insisting they took part in the recent attacks,” Hersi Eed said. The court delayed the hearings of two militants, who were under 16 years old. The semi-autonomous Puntland region has long been considered fairly stable. However, in recent weeks there has been an increase in clashes between al-Shabaab fighters and the security forces. |
