14 soldiers killed in anti-Boko Haram operations: Niger

Niamey (AFP) - Niger's army said Friday that 14 of its soldiers and scores of Boko Haram fighters had been killed during a multi-month sweep operation in the nation's southeast.

Defence ministry spokesman Colonel Moustapha Ledru told state television that "123 terrorists" had been killed and "a large quantity of arms recovered from the insurgents."

It was not possible to independently verify this number.

Ledru said 14 soldiers were killed and 29 wounded in the joint operations with Chad's military took place between July and September 28.

They targeted the Diffa region, which lies just across the border from the Islamists' stronghold in northeastern Nigeria.

Ledru said the "terrorists" who had been killed had "infiltrated" into Diffa from Nigeria, adding that two fighters had been captured.

Boko Haram's seven-year insurgency has left at least 20,000 people dead in Nigeria and border areas of neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, and made more than 2.6 million homeless.

Attacks in Niger's Diffa region began in February 2015.

In late July this year a multinational force, drawn from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon, was formed to tackle the Islamic insurgents and clear them out of towns and villages.

Ledru said operations had led to four strategic localities being taken back from Boko Haram control.14 soldiers killed in anti-Boko Haram operations: Niger

Chad, Niger forces kill 123 Boko Haram in crackdown: Niger

A joint military operation between Chad and Niger has killed 123 Boko Haram militants since July and recovered a significant quantity of weapons, Niger's Defence Ministry said on Friday.

Allied Chadian-Nigerien forces launched an offensive against the Islamists after a surprise attack in Niger killed 30 of the country's troops in early June, its deadliest ever attack there.

Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Moustapha Ledru said 14 of the two nations' own troops had also died and 39 had been wounded in fighting with the Nigerian militant group over the same period.

"An important quantity of arms and weapons were recovered," he added.

Boko Haram is waging a guerrilla war to establish a breakaway Islamic caliphate around the Lake Chad region, where Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad meet.

Ledru said a parallel offensive involving Nigerian forces had recaptured four towns from the Islamists, whose insurgency has killed thousands and displaced 2.4 million.

The U.N. humanitarian coordinator for the region said on Friday that tens of thousands of people are dying of hunger because insecurity has prevented farmers tilling the land and made access for aid agencies almost impossible.

Army to commission female combatant officers – Buratai

Chief Of Army Staff, lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai, said the Nigerian army has concluded plans to review the Harmonized Terms And Conditions of Service(HTACOS), for officers to address the commission of female Regular Combatant officers in the service.

Buratai said this has become necessary as the first batch of female regular combatant officers currently undergoing training at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) would soon complete their training and be commissioned into the Nigerian Army.

The army chief, who made this known while addressing officers at the just concluded chief of army staff combined second and third quarter conference, also said the army would review its training curricula especially in the area of deployment in view of operational exigencies to accommodate the female officers.

“The issue regarding their deployment in view of operational exigencies has necessitated a review of their training curricula as it concerns the Nigerian Army,” Buratai said.

“I have therefore directed the convocation of policy guidelines to augment the provisions of HTACOS (officers) which will address the peculiar nature of their commission vis-a-vis their employment in service.”

“It is thus the desire of the Nigerian Army to resume the admission of female regular combatant cadets in line with global convention on non-discrimination against women in national service”.

To ensure young Nigerian army officers are grounded in the rudiments of regimentation and meet contemporary security challenges,  Buratai, said he has designated 20 Battalion, located in Serti, Taraba state, as a Model Battalion to “instill the rudiments of regimentation into young officers in the field as well as new graduates from the Nigerian Defence Academy.”

Nonsense....what business do females have commanding combat units? The decision to admit females into NDA for the RC was purely political.... Even female West Point grads don't command combat units.

Captain Aliyu: Why is this post not fully manned?!
Private Okoro: Sir, we are awaiting orders.
Captain Aliyu: From who?!
Private Okoro: The platoon commander....Sir, she is on maternity leave.
Captain Aliyu: What?!
Private Okoro: Yes Sir..last week, we had to suspend operations as she was suffering from a bout of postmenstrual stress.

OPERATION DELTA SAFE: NIGERIAN AIR FORCE DESTROYS ILLEGAL OIL REFINERIES AND BARGES

In its concerted effort to stop illegal bunkering and criminal activities in the Niger Delta, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today destroyed illegal oil refineries and barges filled with petroleum products. The refineries and barges were sighted by NAF Diamond 42 aircraft on Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission in Bille Community of Rivers State. Thereafter, an Mi-24V helicopter gunship was called-in for attack. The operation was a success as can be seen from the enclosed photographs of the illegal refineries and barges on fire. A similar operation was carried out with remarkable success about 2 days ago in the same location. These are clear signals to criminals operating in the South-South region, as well as other parts of the country, that it is no longer business as usual.

Female Soldiers have fought and died in Nigerian wars dating back to the Civil War it is the right thing to do . I would rather have a female battle tested Commander that a green horn, it is not political. The six female NDA CADETS that were commissioned almost 4 years ago by all academic accounts have excelled both in and outside the class room.
Nigeria as a nation prior to independence has had capable female commanders who have personally led men into battle women going to war in NIGERIA predates Nigeria as a nation the most famous are Queen Amina ZAU ZAU ( ZARIA) and Madam Tinubu both whom have statues erected in their Honor and one who features on Nigeria's National Currency.
The first six are just the first of more to come who have been directly commissioned from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Female officers have played a crucial role especially in the boko haram war parts of which are classified, however one of Nigeria's most respected female officers ( Captain **** does some very dangerous work dealing with K-9 UNITS and Bomb detection.

Women in Boko Haram fight alongside men – Researchers

Female members of Boko Haram are almost as likely as men to be deployed as fighters in northeast Nigeria, challenging a widespread perception that these women are mainly used as cooks, sex slaves and suicide bombers, researchers said on Monday.

While men in the Islamist group dominate in leadership and training roles, women may outnumber them in other senior roles, such as recruiters and intelligence operatives, according to a report based on interviews with 119 former Boko Haram members.

Four in 10 female respondents said they served as soldiers - compared with 45 percent of men - while both sexes carried out domestic tasks like cooking and cleaning, the report found.

"Recruiters are adapting to the tightening security environment," said Mahdi Abdile, director of research at Finn Church Aid and co-author of the study, adding that women and girls are increasingly being targeted for recruitment.

"The intelligence community is on the lookout for young men, so it is easier for women to navigate past security barriers and penetrate communities," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Boko Haram has killed about 15,000 people and displaced more than 2 million in Nigeria in a seven-year insurgency to carve out an Islamist caliphate, and it still launches attacks despite having been driven out of much of the territory it held in 2014.

The Islamists have stepped up suicide bombings carried out by children in recent years, many of them carried out by girls, according to the U.N. children's agency (UNICEF).

While there has been a global focus on these female suicide bombers, women in Boko Haram have long been involved in planning logistics, planting mines and bombs, and fighting as soldiers, said Vincent Foucher of the International Crisis Group (ICG).

The report also found that six in 10 of the former militants - who are currently undergoing rehabilitation programmes - were introduced to Boko Haram by friends and relatives, while only a quarter learned about the group at mosques or Islamic schools.

"Mosques and madrasas (Islamic schools) used to be the place to get new recruits ... now they are under the spotlight," said Abdile, adding that this shift in strategy represented a challenge for anti-terror and radicalisation efforts in Nigeria.

Religious beliefs, poverty, a lack of education and work, and opportunities offered by Boko Haram were cited by the former militants as the main reasons for joining the Islamist group.

Boko Haram has lured young entrepreneurs and business owners to join them by providing or promising capital and loans to boost their businesses, Mercy Corps said in April.

The report was carried out by Finn Church Aid, The International Dialogue Centre, The Network of Religious and Traditional Peacemakers and the Citizen Research Centre.

Al Shabaab group have carried out overnight attacks against a military base for the Ethiopian troops serving with the African Union forces (AMISOM) near Beledwayne town in Hiiran region, Garowe Online reports.

Local residents told GO that Al Shabaab militants have fired mortar shells at the Ethiopian military base in Eel Ali area located 50 km west of Beledwayne town, but so far no clear information on the casualties of the attacks has been reported.

Al Shabaab group has announced that its mortar attacks has hit the military base and caused damages to the Ethiopian troops stationed there.

Ethiopian soldiers were later deployed into the area and engaged in fierce fighting with Al Shabab militants, which resulted in unspecified number of causalities, as they successfully managed to repulse Al Shabaab militants from the areas, according to local residents.

So far Somalia government and AMISOM officials didn’t comment on Eel Ali attacks on Sunday or the casualties.
