OPERATION LEOPARD

Operation Leopard(March 27 - April 22, 1969) was a military operation conducted against Biafran troops defending Umuahia. No fighting took place inside Umuahia but the area surrounding it was heavily devastated by the Nigerian offensive. Umuahia was finally captured by Nigerian troops on April 22,1969.
On September 17, 1968, after the successful attacks on Aba and Owerri, the Nigerian 3rd Marine Division under Gen. Benjamin Adekunle made their way towards the Biafran capital, Umuahia, only to be intercepted by a fierce Biafran defensive. A bloody battle between both sides lasted for 14 days before the 3rd Marine Division retreated to Owerri on October 1.

With the 3rd Marine Division's failed attempt to capture Umuahia during Operation OAU the Nigerian Col. Mohammed Shuwa decided to give it a try. Col. Shuwa put Lt. Col. Theophilus Danjuma in charge of the 1st Division consisting of the 4th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 82nd battalions and began moving towards the Biafran capital. At the time Umuahia was defended by the Biafran 13th Division consisting of the 54th and 55th brigades. On March 27, 1969, a company of the Biafran 15th Division and 55th Brigade were suddenly attacked the invading Nigerians with overwhelming force. The 1st Division managed to break through a gap in the Biafran defenses and bulldozed their way even closer to the city. As a result of the swift Nigerian advance Biafran re-enforcements were being sent to Umuahia to defend the capital. Before re-enforcements arrived the Nigerian 82nd Battalion under Maj. Ibrahim Babangida attacked and capture Uzuakoli. On April 2 Biafran artillery began bombarding the Nigerian 82nd Battalion in Uzuakoli, who reply with their own artillery fire. During the fierce fighting that ensued Maj. Babangida was wounded by a Biafran shell and was evacuated, being replaced by his second in command who counterattacks with armored cars and artillery. When the 82nd Battalion turned its guns on the Aba-Umuahia road the Biafrans replied with their Ogbunigwe mines and were able to capture Uzuakoli. On April 3 the Nigerian Air Force began bombing the Aba-Umuahia road from Uzuakoli to Umuahia, which lasted for 8 days, turning the road into an impassable fire storm. On April 19 the Nigerian 21st and 44th battalions broke through the Biafran defenses around Uzuakoli and managed to get within 4 km of Umuahia. Because the Aba-Umuahia road had been heavily mined and filled with obstacles Nigerian 1st Division troops decided to make their way to Umuahia across country with newly acquired trucks and tanks. The Biafran Gen. Timothy Onwuatuegwu was replaced as commander of the S Division with Maj. Azum Asoya, but it was discovered too late that there were no Biafran troops in place to stop the advancing Nigerians. On April 22 the Nigerian 21st and 44th battalions occupied Umuahia.

Umuahia stayed under Nigerian control for the rest of the war and served as the headquarters for the Nigerian 1st Division. On December 24, 1969, the Nigerian 3rd Marine Division under Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo launched a final attack on Biafra and managed to capture Owerri and the Uli airstrip within 2 weeks. On January 8, 1970, the new Biafran President Philip Effiong declared a ceasefire and surrendered to Nigeria on January 12.

2 dead as Nigerian Army battles Boko Haram in Madagali

A gun battle between soldiers and members of the Boko Haram led to the death of two of the insurgents, the Nigerian Army has said.
The Commanding Officer in charge of 28 Taskforce Battalion, Mubi, Adamawa, V. O. Ezugwu, who stated this on Wednesday, also said 16 families were rescued in the encounter in Adamawa State.
Mr. Ezugwu, a Brigadier General, told journalists in a telephone interview in Yola that the success was recorded on Tuesday night during an encounter with the insurgents in Madagali Local Government Area of the state.
Mr. Ezugwu said more than 100 cows were recovered alongside two AK 47, six grenade, two pump action machine guns and 18 motorcycles from the fleeing insurgents.
He said the motorcycles were all destroyed.
The officer lauded the complementary effort of vigilante members in the area for their support to the military.
Of recent, Boko Haram insurgents had been attacking villages in Madagali Local Government Area.
Commenting on the development, Adamu Kamale, the lawmaker representing Madagali/Michilka Federal Constituency, commended the effort of the troops and urged the Federal Government to urgently deploy more troops to the area to effectively check the renewed menace of the insurgents.
Hundreds of people have been killed in attacks by the Boko Haram since May 29 when President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn into office. Before then, about 20,000 had been killed in Boko Haram-related attacks.
Renewed efforts by the military has seen it recapture several territory previously taken by the insurgents.

Boko Haram: Nigerian army and self-defence fighters kill 150 extremists, rescue 36 captives

The Nigerian Army along with self-defence fighters reportedly gunned down close to 150 Boko Haram extremists and rescued 36 children and women form their captivity. The operation was carried out on Tuesday night (20 October), after an intelligence report claimed the insurgents were planning to launch an attack, in the north eastern part of the country.
"We succeeded in killing, at least, 150 Boko Haram members. We also recovered four AK 47 rifles, seven hand grenades, six locally-made EIDs, and 15 double barrel guns," said Bukar Jimeta, a senior vigilante official to the Punch newspaper.
Along with sophisticated weapons, around 155 cattle were also recovered in the operation, which took place along Ser-Jaji border communities of Madagali — Gwoza. The operation, planned by the army, included several joint task force personnel and vigilante fighters, who joined the army in the raid.
The attack comes in wake of the Nigerian Army's statement on Tuesday, where it had given Boko Haram terrorists what it called, "the final warning".
In the past few months, the Nigerian army has stepped up its attack on Boko Haram, by reclaiming many tracts especially in the north-eastern part of the country, the terrorist stronghold. They also claimed that many militants have surrendered, and said that on 2 September around 200 extremists put down their weapons. The army also managed to free 241 women and children last month, close to the Cameroon border.
Boko Haram, however, have denied the claim by the army that scores of extremists had surrendered. The militant group has killed over 20,000 people in its six-year uprising so far.

Actually the vehicle was shot chasing BH then crashed ,chattering into pieces. But regarding the engine block that is no longer present there ? It was deliberately removed by the army. It's a practice for the army not to leave any substance of valuable use to BH militias. Including hunts, houses in hamlets and villages including bicycles, bykes, cars and trucks etc.

Al-Shabaab faction pledges allegiance to ISIS

Nairobi, Kenya (CNN)A high-ranking member and spiritual leader of Al-Shabaab has pledged allegiance to ISIS, a move that further fractures the Somali-based jihadi group and spreads the reach of ISIS further into Africa.

The report that formerly UK-based Abdul Qadir Mumin had sworn loyalty to ISIS came from a source familiar with Al-Shabaab and was supported by a U.S. intelligence source, who said Mumin's pledge came in a video that is expected to be released online.

In the video, Mumin, along with several other jihadis based in Somalia's Central Region, swear their allegiance to ISIS. Some known Al-Shabaab members have already done so online.

Al-Shabaab's leadership pledged loyalty to al Qaeda in 2012.

The Al-Shabaab-linked source told CNN that members of the group now fear for their lives as other political leaders systematically try to root out possible ISIS supporters within their ranks.

Sources within Al-Shabaab say the announcement is not totally unexpected. For weeks, Al-Shabaab's secret police, known as the Amniyat, have been arresting and jailing members within the insurgent group who they believed would switch their allegiance from al Qaeda to ISIS. The source close to the jihadi group told CNN from inside Somalia that the situation within the group is "tense," and likened it to a "state of emergency."

Mumin is thought to be currently based in the mountainous Puntland region of northern Somalia, and thus unlikely to be persecuted or reached by the Amniyat, which operates mostly in southern Somalia.

The split is more significant in symbolism than in numbers.

Sources within Somalia's security apparatus estimate that about 100 fighters would likely defect to ISIS, among the estimated 1,400-strong insurgent group.

Yet the defections are mostly coming from the younger members, while the older members maintain allegiance to al Qaeda. A Western diplomat inside Somalia told CNN the defection demonstrates a discontent with the current status quo, and shows that ISIS may be more appealing to younger, more impressionable jihadis.

"What does ISIS hold for these disaffected members of Al-Shabaab?" asked the western diplomat. "What is the 'wedding gift,' so to speak? This is about technical expertise and funding. Al-Shabaab's money streams are being depleted by the current war. ISIS could be seen as really attractive on one hand, and dangerous on another. This is a sort of terrorists' conundrum."

One analyst explained ISIS' effectiveness in using modern technology to recruit new members.

"Many experts and scholars view (ISIS) as a juggernaut that the international community simply cannot oppose because they use violence so brutally and then disseminate it so effectively over social media in an effort to recruit new members and intimidate opposing forces," said terrorism expert Max Abrahms, based in the United States.

Al-Shabaab's leadership, however, is still very much pro-al Qaeda. Its most recent propaganda video, showing a deadly attack on Burundian soldiers fighting for the African Union in Southern Somalia, used quotes from the late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and the group's current leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri. "This is a subtle way of intimating the leadership's loyalty to al Qaeda," says a source close to Somalia's intelligence service, NISA.

Al-Shabaab's current leader -- Ahmad Umar -- has been described by his followers as ruling with an iron fist, perhaps using the possible ISIS defection as pretext to take out those who have spoken up against the leadership or their policies and suppress opposition.

"This ... iron fist policy ... has caused discontent in the ranks of the Mujahideen," the source close to Al-Shabaab told CNN, referring to foreign fighters. "Many Muhajirs (foreign fighters and members of the diaspora) were trying to leave and the harakah (leadership) is trying to make them stay."

The leadership wants to keep the non-Somali fighters inside Somalia and keep them pro-al Qaeda to continue to make their operation appear legitimate, the source added.

"Al-Shabaab won't have a jihadi legitimacy if they don't have muhajideen (foreign fighters) within their ranks," the source said. "They were built on welcoming foreign fighters, and having them in the movement's hierarchy from the very first day."

The defection of some Al-Shabaab members to a pro-ISIS allegiance is a serious win for the Islamist terror group and potentially spreads its reach from Iraq and Syria through to North Africa, then to West Africa through Nigeria's Boko Haram group and now to East Africa, potentially as far as the borders of Kenya.

"The Islamic State has been trying to recruit Somalis and members of Al-Shabaab for a while, it helps ISIS color in their map just that bit more," says a Somali intelligence source speaking from the capital, Mogadishu.

The defection also shows a certain division within its ranks.

The source close to Al-Shabaab told CNN he thought it was "the worst idea ever."

"Morally -- I see (ISIS) as a deviant, bloodthisty tyrannical group," he said. "I don't know why I would join them. (ISIS) cannot get us heavy weaponry or fill our ranks with men and expertise due to geographical issues. The only thing we would gain from joining them is momentum."

Picture below shows; Al-Shabaab recruits walk in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, after their graduation on March 5, 2012.

DHQ Dismisses Reports About Mercenaries Deployment

The Defence Headquarters has dismissed reports that Nigeria has hired mercenaries to fight against the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast of the country.

It was reported yesterday that the Nigerian authorities had decided to deploy about 250 mercenaries from South Africa, along with some heavy weaponry from South African private military company Specialized Tasks, Training, Equipment and Protection.

Speaking with The Nation about the allegations, the DHQ director of defence information, Colonel Rabe Abubakar, insisted that the Nigerian military had the ability to eliminate terrorism. He characterized the reports as a deliberate attempt to set Nigerians against the government and the military.

“The issue about mercenaries lacks substance; I want you to note that for the past months, the military has been fighting this war more and more effectively and all Nigerians, irrespective of where they live, have come to understand that we are making tremendous progress.

“So, why should some people bring up this idea of bringing in mercenaries? Which mercenaries, from where and to do what?

“You see, all this is part of the usual antics of blackmail by the enemies of Nigeria – those who do not want the progress that the Nigerian military are making and those who are not happy with the successes we are recording.

“They are trying to derail by inciting Nigerians against the Nigerian armed forces. There is no nation in the world where such thing (hiring mercenaries while winning a battle) happens.

“We are doing our best and achieving effective results; we don’t need to say it because Nigerians see it and appreciate what we are doing. We will continue to use our soldiers, our officers and all our domestic resources.

“The Nigerian armed forces is doing its best to ensure that we surmount the Boko Haram issue and other allied criminalities; so, such disinformation or blackmail will not deter us from doing what we are supposed to be doing. It is not just a lie; it is completely unfounded and baseless.

“We will continue to do our part and our armed forces are capable of dislodging Boko Haram. We have done it elsewhere and we will do it in our country.”

Shortly after his inauguration, Muhammadu Buhari ordered the Nigerian service chiefs to eliminate the insurgency by the end of the year.

The military continue the offensive in the northeast claiming that the army is winning the anti-Boko Haram war.

Breaking: Cameroon army retakes town of Kerawa from Boko Haram

The Cameroon army late Friday retook Kerawa, a town in the far north of the country that was briefly seized by Boko Haram jihadists, security sources said.

“They pulled out after the troops arrived. There hasn’t been any more fighting,” a source said, while another said the Islamist group had “fled” to neighbouring Nigeria.

Kerawa, a town of 50,000 inhabitants, was taken by Nigeria-based Boko Haram early Friday, and sources said an unspecified number of civilians had been killed in the assault.

Well said mate, I still see less cooperation between member state affected with BH. I mean for God sake enough of fleeing BH that will go back and retake another town, then the military will retake the city again, on and on like that ? I think that was why the Multinational Joint Task Force was created and it seems the creation is of no use. When attacking BH positions they should be always surronded and crushed. I think member states should review there operational modules operandi, to save cost of fighting, time and to save lives of helpless citizens who face the risk of being attacked by fleeing terrorist like what happen last week where they killed and burned almost 20 in there vehicles.

Army Purges Boko Haram From Borno State Towns

The Nigerian Army are destroying Boko Haram camps and enclaves in Kerenowa and Chikun Gudu, the border towns in Borno state, as well as surrounding areas.

The troops of the 5 Brigade Nigerian Army have, up to date, liquidated over 20 well-fortified terrorist camps at the gateway to Kerenowa, Gumada and Dogon Gida. The troops have also discovered twin tunnels that Boko Haram members dug in order to conceal their training facilities and access routes from the army aerial reconnaissance and bombardment.

Roads linking Marte, New Marte and Kerenowa towns have been cleared of improvised explosive devices planted by the terrorists.

Sani Usman, the army spokesman who delivered the news, called the progress tremendous.

“It is apparent that the Boko Haram terrorists lacked the will to fight as they are in obvious disarray,” he said, “abandoning their camps fleeing and leaving behind vehicles, solar panels used to power devices, food and other logistics, beddings, various IED making devices, cables and cords.

“The advancing troops’ morale remains very high and they exude confidence and zeal to destroy all known Boko Haram camps along their axis of advance.

“We still reiterate our call for citizens to remain confident in the ability of our troops to eliminate all remaining vestiges of the terrorists before the year runs out in line with presidential directives. Citizens are also requested to kindly provide useful and credible information to the military about any known terrorist or sympathisers.”

Below are photographs documenting the army’s successful advancement towards wiping out Boko Haram below;
