The Nigerian Army on Thursday raised alarm over the use of deadly cluster bombs by the boko haram terrorist group.

Rabe Abubakar, defence spokesman warned residents of the north-east to be on the lookout.

''Nigerians living in the northeast and any other parts of the country to be on the lookout for cluster bombs sometimes called scatter bombs as the Nigeria army engineers serving in Adamawa state had recovered some caches of these bombs in the contested areas in recent time. The military high command has discovered that the Boko Haram terrorists (BHT) in the areas have used such lethal instruments over time to push their callous terrorist cause.

''For easy identification, it is important to note that cluster bombs are bombs that house submunitions, that is, smaller explosives contained in individual cases. These bombs are used against large areas containing many targets, such as columns of vehicles, marketplaces, places of worship or large troop concentration as the case may be.

''Some cluster bombs carry several hundred of very small explosives wrapped in a metal container like a pot while others carry larger submunitions that can find specific targets such as tanks. Some of these submunitions do not blow up immediately, but remain behind and act as landmines. This can be an acceptable explanation for the recovery of caches of these bombs by Nigeria army engineers in the area.

''The public is hereby requested to be wary of such concealed dangerous equipment now being used by the terrorist elements to cause havoc to both innocent lives and property. The public is also advised to report such objects/materials if seen to security agencies for prompt action. The terrorists are desperate and frustrated and could use any cruel instrument to actualise their evil intention.

ATTACK ON SECTOR 1, 27 TASKFORCE BRIGADE AT GEIDAM ; NIGERIAN TROOPS DEFEAT INVADING FORCE, LOSE 3 SOLDIERS

The Nigerian Army said troops killed most terrorists and destroyed their weapons and equipment during an attack on its Sector 1 of 27 Task Force Brigade located at Gaidam, Yobe State on Wednesday evening, but it lost three soldiers and some equipment.

A statement by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations said the attack was successfully repelled by the troops and the reinforcement sent.

It said the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai who was on operational visit to North East, personally visited the troops location and assessed the damage done. “He warned the officers of the unit that such ugly incident should not be allowed to happen again,” the statement said.

The COAS also drove into the town and further assessed damage by the terrorists and gave further directives to the troops for the defence and improved security of the general area. He also met with some of the community leaders and Idris Aloma Polytechnic staff where he assured them of their safety and improved security.

“The situation in Geidam is now calm and people are going about their normal businesses,” it said. The Chief of Army Staff was received at Geidam by the General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Major General Hassan Umaru and Acting Commander 27 Task Force Brigade who led the reinforcement team last night.

The COAS was accompanied on the visit by the Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Yusha’u Abubakar, the Chief of Training and Operations (Army), Major General Fatai Alli, as well as Acting Director of Military Intelligence, Acting Provost Marshall and Director of Campaign Planning, as well as the Acting Director Army Public Relations and the Liaison Officer of the Multinational Joint Taskforce.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to assure the public that this isolated incident would not be allowed to repeat itself. We reaffirm our determination and commitment to route out the Boko Haram terrorists in all their enclaves
before the end of this year,” it said.

“The Chief of Army has continued his operational visit to other formations and units within the theatre of war against the Boko Haram terrorists.”

Probably those captured by BH militias when NA/NAF BASES where over-ran and don't forget BH can get such thing from the black market with the porous borders and affiliation of BH to ISIS they can lay there hands on such things easily

Actually the NA is just bringing it to awareness of the public, should incase civilians see such familiar thing or probably they come across familiar objects they should be contacted.

Good job @bidexii, very good job so far. Thanks for showing us all these nice photos.

May I ask, have you heard about Nigerian troops comments on our multiple grenade launchers and automatic grenade launchers performance in the battle field? We seem to have a lot of them and every soldier holding one seems to be very happy, how do the boys like these MGL and AGL and how has the effectiveness been against Boko Haram? Any information coming from our individual soldiers on the frontline on this?

@ agaugust tnks man.
To your question both the LG3 AGL 40mm and LG4 MGL both have delivered knock out punchs to the enemies in the north Eastern battle frontlines. Few where firstly procured to check there combat and battle effectiveness , and it as proven itself. And more have being procured in recent times.
It as a effective blast radius of 5 meters and double in radius for shrapnels . You wouldn't want to be taking direct fire of both weapons in real life, I tell you BH BOIS ARE SCARED AND THEY TAKE TO THERE HEALS WHEN EVER THE PROJECTILES COME HITING THEM SCATTERING ALL OVER THE AIR ! But the problem we have especially with infantry men on patrol is that they don't carry enough ammo. And that takes us to our standardization of NA gear.

BreakingNews 9/10/15 - Armed Forces Operational Reforms: Departing From Crude To Modern Soldiering

[ Masterweb Reports: Intersociety reports ]: (Intersociety, 9th October 2015)-The public announcement late yesterday (08/10/2015) to the effect that the Chief of Defense Staff (Gen Gabriel Olonisakin) has inaugurated a 10-member committee to study the doctrines and procedures of the military and come up with workable plans to renew the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) is a welcome development and a clear departure from hitherto “jack of all knowledge and master of nonentity” approach of various public institutions in Nigeria including the country’s public coercive or security institutions. The Nigerian Military statement under reference was signed by Group Captain Wap Maigida late yesterday in Abuja on behalf of Acting Director Defence Information, Col. Rabe Abubakar and was reported in the media including the News Express Online.

It is on record that Nigerian public office holders and their institutions hardly consider informed and expert opinions as they concern topical social, economic, scientific and political issues particularly those coming from intellectual and cerebrated civil society communities. They also hardly attend to and consider written representations or public interest letters addressed to them from these expert communities and hardly accept and learn from their policy mistakes and blunders. As a matter of fact, they are blended and indoctrinated in immunity of impunity.

Barely 48 hours ago (07/10/2015), we issued an informed public statement, titled: 1,700 Terror Killings & Renewed Bombings Under Buhari: Chasing Bomb Detonators With Machetes, in which we came down heavily on the Armed Forces of Nigeria including the Army, DSS, NIA and the Nigeria Police Force for using approaches unknown to the modern intra-State warfare in their counter measures against insurgency activities ravaging the country since 2009. In other words, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have been heavily criticized by Intersociety for using inter-State warfare approaches to confront intra-State insurgency violence in Nigeria. The anomalous approaches are clearly antithetical to human rights and humanitarian doctrines guiding modern internal armed conflicts. They are also unknown to the post cold war military strategies or approaches aimed at tackling insurgency, guerrilla or terrorism.

That the likes of Retired Generals Olusegun Obasanjo, Theo Danjuma, Muhammadu Buhari, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Ibrahim Babangida, late Sani Abacha, to mention but a few, became generals  was not because of their expertise in modern military or warfare artistry, but crudely by virtue of their ability to cease public communications signals and announce the ousting of their former bosses from the Dodan Barracks in military coups and counter-coups. This is the military generalship of the Nigeria’s military’s inglorious epochs. Unfortunately, that crude tradition is still the stock-in-trade of the Nigerian military till date. Added to this are the habitual office rankings and promotions largely built on nepotism and favoritism and devoid of merit and outstanding performances in the confines of modern integrated military know-how or expertise.

Military doctrines are never static, but steadily dynamic. For instance, in the eighties, Ethiopia used to have the largest military soldiers in Africa with over 500,000 officers. Yet, at the same time, the country was simultaneously at war all its fourteen provinces.  But today, its soldiers are under 100,000. China globally has cut down its soldiers from about 4million in the past eight years to 2.3million in 2015.

The instances above clearly show that global and modern soldiering has gone scientific, making maximum use of information computer technology (ICT) and highly trained and exposed human intelligence. The concept of war has also changed steadily from inter-State warfare to intra-State warfare since the end of cold-war in 1991.  For instance, of 64 active or violent conflicts ravaging the world presently, most, if not all of them, are intra-State warfare. In the said intra-State warfare ravaging the world of present time, about 597 intra-State armed groups are directly involved. In all these, the modern warfare concept now revolves around man-machine-environment as well as wars-without-borders. Similar situations are applicable in the promotion, defense and protection of human rights where non State actors have now surpassed State actors in the realm of gross human rights abuses.

Intersociety has carefully studied and agreed with the Military Committee’s terms of reference, which are below stated as follows: “to re-appraise previous AFN’s transformation activities and suggest options for realistic reforms”;“to determine ways of improving on operational efficiency in the services”; “to examine ways of fostering mission-oriented training in the armed forces”; “to evaluate the foreign courses that are currently attended by AFN personnel and suggest ways of ensuring that such courses tally with desired milestones”; “consider measures for improving on troops adherence to Law of Armed Conflicts in Internal Security and Peace Support Operations”; “ determine impediments to effective logistics support and recommend the way forward”; “identify current constabulary engagements of the AFN that could be relinquished to the Nigerian Police and other paramilitary organizations”; “ examine ways of fostering value orientation of service personnel through nationalism and the promotion of services’ core values”;  and “suggest ways of improving on career planning in the AFN”.

The Nigerian Military spokesman also added that “the Committee will also take a critical look at personnel welfare, civil-military relations, policy formulation and implementation, media operations, participation in UN/AU/ECOWAS missions, personnel spouses and barracks youths, plights of ex-service men, career review and national development. The Committee which may also consider other matters that may result in reforms that would reinvigorate the AFN and empower them to seek inputs from the Service Headquarters, serving and retired senior officers, relevant MDAs and other stakeholders to enrich its recommendations.”

As fantastic as the above terms of reference are, we wish to urge the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to also introduce compulsory ICT programs for all officers and personnel of the Armed Forces. All the ranking categories from Private to General or their equivalents must be captured in the compulsory exercise. There shall also be networking and digitalization of all military formations in the country. Apart from out-service or foreign military courses for selected members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the AFN leadership should also make maximum and steady use of the resources of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) particularly in its robust academic fields of Criminology & Security Studies as well as Peace Studies & Conflict Resolution.

Military fighter jet crashes in northeast Nigeria war zone

YOLA, Nigeria (AP) — A Nigerian Air Force fighter jet on a bombing mission against Boko Haram crashed in a windstorm in the country's northeast, killing the pilot, an official statement and a witness said.
The jet "returning to base from an interdicted mission crashed due to bad weather and not under enemy fire," Air Force spokesman Commodore Dele Alonge said in a statement issued Saturday.
The Chinese-built Chengdu F7 went down in a rural area of Adamawa State, Alonge said. The crash happened in an area where Boko Haram Islamic extremists last year shot down a military jet and beheaded its pilot.
Farmer Moses David said he watched the pilot parachute from the plunging jet, only to ram into a tree, which killed him.
He said there was a violent windstorm when the jet hit the ground with such force that its nose is buried.
In August, a Nigerian Air Force plane crashed into a home in northern Kaduna city, killing all four crew and three passengers. In November 2014, a military helicopter exploded in the northeast, killing all three crew members. In December 2013, Boko Haram destroyed two helicopter gunships and three fighter jets in northeastern Maiduguri city.
The Air Force commander reported ordering new aircraft last year after the U.S. confirmed it had refused to sell Nigeria attack helicopters because of concerns about its ability to use and maintain the aircraft, as well as the military's failure to protect civilians in the Islamic uprising.
Nigeria's president of four months, Muhammadu Buhari, has criticized the United States for its decision although President Barack Obama has promised other help to end the uprising that has claimed some 20,000 lives in six years, according to Amnesty International.

Nigerian troops pushing into Boko Haram terrorists dens

Nigerian Army has confirmed that its troops are gradually clearing all known camps, enclaves and dens of Boko Haram terrorists especially in the north eastern part of the country.

A statement by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations said the development was as a result of the continued offensives against the terrorists by advancing troops that Boko Haram terrorists fled and abandoned their locations at Nafari and Gonin Kurmi.

“In a haste, they left various food items and personal effects as they fled to Sambisa forest,” the statement said.

The Army said the noose was tightening around the terrorists  and “troops will continue the momentum until all terrorists and their camps are no more in any part of Nigerian territory.”

The Army again called upon citizens to continue co-operating with security agencies through provision of timely and credible information about any known terrorists, their hideouts and collaborators.

The Nigerian Army is currently engaging some unknown gunmen suspected to be terrorists in gun battle in Kogi state.

Sources from Okene have confirmed the ongoing gun battle.

According to Premium Times, an Islamic cleric in the town said that the gunmen were “terrorists”.

The cleric said residents remained indoors as the clash continued.

He said: “We are presently in our houses, no any movement at all! Gun shooting everywhere.”

Meanwhile, the governorship election in Kogi state has been slated for Saturday, November 21, and in line with the exercise, the Nigerian police has set aside 31,000 officers to ensure safety within the period.

Solomon Arase, the police inspector general, said the high level of preparation on the part of security agency is in corroboration of the assurance that Governor Idris Wada gave on Wednesday, October 7, to provide adequate security for the electorates.

Arase vowed to deploy seven police officers to each of the poling units across the state in order to checkmate electoral violence.

Gen. Sir Nick Houghton Visits British Army Training Team In Nigeria

General Sir Nicholas Houghton also met with senior Nigerian government officials to discuss how the UK might optimise the training support it can offer.
The UK has a resident British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT) in the African nation, which has grown in size since former Foreign Secretary William Hague announced last summer that the UK would increase its training and capacity building support to the Nigerian military to help it counter the violent extremist organisation known as Boko Haram.

Supported by the deployment of a growing number of short-term training teams (STTT), the BMATT is helping to deliver an expanding training programme to all three services of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

More than 100 UK military personnel have deployed to Nigeria already this year on training tasks ranging from one to eight weeks in length, providing training and advice in a number of niche areas such as countering improved explosive devices, infantry patrolling skills, civil-military cooperation and command and leadership. This number will grow as the UK continues to expand its offer of assistance.

UK personnel currently deployed in Nigeria are helping to train Nigerian troops who will deploy on operations against Boko Haram in the north-east.
General Sir Nicholas Houghton visited them to see their work after holding routine meetings, with President Muhammadu Buhari, and senior Nigerian military officials, in which he praised the ‘remarkable progress’ of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the last two months, and offered to intensify UK help and support.

Whilst the UK is helping to deliver pre-deployment training for counter-insurgency operations, our package of support is not all about Boko Haram and the BMATT is working closely with Nigerian military training schools and academies, helping to build longer term capacity as part of our enduring Defence relationship.

Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir Nicholas Houghton said:
"I was extremely pleased to visit our military training team in Nigeria and see, first-hand, the excellent work being carried out by our troops with Nigerian forces."

10 killed as soldiers, sect members clash in Kogi

Ten people were killed in the Okene area of Kogi state during a bloody encounter between members of an extremist sect and men of the Nigerian army on Tuesday. Some soldiers, who sustained injuries in the incident, are said to be receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja. According to NAN, security men stormed a mosque located on Inike street in Okene with the aim of dislodging the sect members. The soldiers were said to have obtained information from two members of the sect, who were arrested during a gun attack at the office of the state security service in Lokoja on September 25. Meanwhile, normalcy is said to have returned to the area but residents have reportedly refused to come out of their houses because of fear. William Aya, public relations officer of the Kogi state police command, refused to give details of the incident, describing it as “a pure military affair”. Efforts to get the reaction of the commander of the Nigerian army records command in Lokoja proved abortive.

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday confirmed an attack on troops on patrol in Kogi State on Tuesday.
The attack on the troops, who were on cordon and search operations, was launched by the terrorists around Enike Mosque in Okene.
A statement by the Nigerian Army said two terrorists were killed as the troops repelled the attack.
A soldier, however, lost his life.
The statement, signed by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman, said a Rocket Propelled Grenade bomb and empty cases of expended ammunition were recovered.
Usman added in the statement: “The situation has been brought under control and people have been asked to go about their normal businesses in the town.”

Troops kill 10 insurgents, arrest ‘masterminds’ of Yobe bombings

Ten members of the Boko Haram sect were killed during an exchange of gunfire with soldiers in Yobe state on Tuesday. Sani Usman, spokesman of the Nigerian army, announced this in a statement, saying the suspects who attacked a military location in Geidam, Yobe, last week, have been arrested. Usman said the military recovered many weapons in the operation. “Troops of 5 Brigade ambushed suspected Boko Haram terrorists that attacked military location and Geidam town last week,” the statement read. “They were ambushed while returning from an attack on Gajiram near Ngollom village. “The troops killed 10 Boko Haram terrorists and wounded some. The troops also recovered 1  anti-aircraft Gun, 5 AK 47 Rifles, 1 fabrique nationale Rifle, 2 machine guns and 1 light machine gun. “Other weapons and equipment recovered include a Rocket Propel Grenade Tube, 8  AK 47 rifle magazines, 1 x Toyota Landcruiser,  2 Belts of 7.62MM (NATO) with  150 and  180 rounds of ammunition respectively. “Additionally, troops on patrol around Monguno have arrested one Abacha Kumjo a suspected Boko Haram fuel and logistics supplier. “He was arrested with 20 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) neatly concealed in a black polythene bag while trying to cross from Monguno to a terrorists camp. He siphoned the fuel from his Golf Wagon vehicle with registration number AA 175 MFA, Borno State. The suspect is being interrogated further. “It is pertinent to once more reiterate the call on the public to cooperate with security agencies, be more security conscious and report suspected persons or unusual movements to the security agencies. “The fight against terrorism and insurgency is a collective responsibility of all well meaning citizens. We should not allow these criminals to succeed in thwarting our collective efforts of peaceful coexistence.”
