Everydaeguy: Good to see some igbos with deep reasoning .... for a war which the FMG of Nigeria humbly declared a no victor no vanquish war..... I see no reason why the few people who caused the war should be seen as heroes.. Can't remember the FMG of Nigeria singling out a Nigerian soldier as the hero of. the war even when the Biafra soldiers surrendered to them. In my own opinion the real heroes are the innocent children and women from any part of Nigeria that lost there lives in the course of the war and also patriotic and loyal soldiers from both sides who paid the ultimate price for what they believed in and fought till death for. 5 Likes |

@@@@@ extract speak volume! Yet there appears to be no reason why Biafra, with its 15 million people, could not have established a viable, independent state. Biafrans argued that they were a people with a distinctive language and culture, that they were Christian as opposed to the Muslim communities lumped into the Nigeria federal state, which had, after all, been a colonial creation. In fact, Biafra was also one of the most developed regions in Africa with a high density of roads, schools, hospitals and factories. The struggle for an independent state certainly appeared to have the support of the majority of Biafrans, whose sense of nationhood deepened throughout the war as enormous sacrifices were made to contribute to the war effort. What is crystal clear is that the wishes of the Biafrans were never a major concern of British planners; what they wanted, or what Nigerians elsewhere in the federation wanted, was simply not an issue for Whitehall. There is simply no reference in the government files, that I have seen, to this being a consideration. The priorities for London were maintaining the unity of Nigeria for geo-political interests and protecting British oil interests. This meant that Gowon’s FMG was backed right from the start. But the files also reveal astonishing levels of connivance with the FMG’s aggression. Gowon asked whether Britain would provide fighter cover for the attack and naval support to reinforce the blockade of Eastern ports; the Defence Attache replied that both were out of the question.
the birth of one chance and 419 hypocrite there In the first half of the following year, 1968, Britain approved the export of 15 million rounds of ammunition, 21,000 mortar bombs, 42,500 Howtizer rounds, 12 Oerlikon guns, 3 Bofors guns, 500 submachine guns, 12 Saladins with guns and spare parts, 30 Saracens and spare parts, 800 bayonets, 4,000 rifles and two other helicopters. At the same time Wilson was constantly reassuring Gowon of British support for a united Nigeria, saying in April 1968 that ‘I think we can fairly claim that we have not wavered in this support throughout the civil war’. These massive arms exports were being secretly supplied – indeed, massively stepped up – at a time when one could read about the actions of the recipients in the newspapers. After the Biafran withdrawal from the mid-west in September 1967 a series of massacres started against Ibo residents. The New York Times reported that over 5,000 had been killed in various towns of the mid west. About 1,000 Ibos were killed in Benin city by local people with the acquiescence of the federal forces, the New York Review noted in December 1967. Around 700 Ibo males were lined up and shot in the town of Asaba, the Observer reported in January 1968. According to eyewitnesses the Nigerian commander ordered the execution of every Ibo male over the age of ten. Chukwuabiahama is God and we are here This support was now taking place amid public and parliamentary pressure for a halt to British arms to Lagos, with 70 Labour MPs, for example, filing a motion for such an embargo in May 1968. Yet the real extent of arms supplied by Britain was concealed from the public. of course we will fire all cylinders at the same time; we will see these basstards in court ndi ara

1stola: Ojukwu is this, Ojukwu is that. One mans freedom fighter is another mans terrorist. Even if Ojukwu had never been born, the Igbos would still have left Nigeria anyway. Biafra is much bigger than Ojukwu or the SS people. The Igbos are going to have Biafra with or without the SS people. You think we are forcing the SS to join us? Biafra is the land of free people and if the SS people want to stay in Nigeria then that is their choice. Whatever map you see is a proposal of what Biafra should be and not a decree of what it must be. As I said before, no matter how you put it, you cannot force anyone to be a Nigerian. Nigeria is a scam and a fraud. If it was the North that had oil and sea port, they would have declared Arewa Republic long before Ojukwu declared Biafra and there would no Nigeria today. The only difference is that Igbos would have been happy to be rid of them. 1 Like |

And this people held Naija for 3 yrs? Very embarrasing. Think of what would have happened if these were given arms 25% of the federal forces. Shameless army that can't defeat BH with over 1 billion dollar loan together with other billion of dollars worth of military hardwares. SMH Give MEND just 5% of those wares and money and BH will be a history without foreign boots. 2 Likes |

joeyfire: Lmao! 500,000 soldiers indeed, yet most of the junior officers who fought during the war came back home alive, in one piece. Let me test how smart/intelligent you're: Erm, do you know any junior officer in the Nigerian army that was killed during the war? There were only about 10,000 folks in the Nigerian army back then, with Igbos making-up about a third of that number. The number of officers should be less than 200, including Igbos. If they were to lose a number as high as half a million - you'd agree with me that a lot of those officers would have been killed cos junior officers fight within the ranks with infantry. So, how come the overwhelming majority, if not all of them, returned unharmed in one piece, despite the overly exaggerated half-a-million casualties? Biafra also didn't lose anything close to 3 million. The population of Igbos back then was just slightly over 8 million. Are you saying Igbo lost over a third of its population in that war? |

cntabs:You must have spent most of your life in the South West. I spent mine in the north. I insist that Ojukwu is a hero. O yes you might not feel hated given the people you have been meeting but same cannot be said of majority of us. Igbos and Yorubas have no physical enmity like you said but when politicians and professionals are making frantic effort to hinder development from getting to your region what do we call that. You mentioned ministerial appointments as though you can equate that to tangible institutions lacking from our region. Let me ask you: why is Lagos the only operational seaport in all our coastal cities? Why should a highly commercial region like SE denied an international airport until GEJ's regime? Why is SE the region with the fewest number of states with comes with a lot of comparative losses especially the allocations? You might be comfortable with the little you're getting as an individual but some of us are cut out for looking out for not just ourselves but others too. Granted some of our people can be arrogant but is that enough to paint our people in with the same brush. The Yorubas present themselves as without flaws but tell me does the unreliability of a good number of them confirm them as unreliable people? Do we generalize all Yorubas as dirty people because a good number of them seem so untidy? If not then you should not allow others make you look at your people in entirety as arrogant people. I personally don't hate a group of people but I won't watch as they brand my people with all sort of bad names and use that as an excuse to deny us our entitlements. You for instance don't feel that their any problem between Igbos and Yorubas but wait until a critical position comes up that you're qualified to occupy then you will see an iota of that deprivation I was talking about. My brother this is the reality of our present Nigeria. The Yorubas view the Igbos with suspicion hinged on the assumption that Ndigbo hate them and would want to bring harm to them. To forestall any of such assumed plan of Ndigbo from materializing they would seek the alliance of the Hausa/fulanis at any cost. While it is true that Ndigbo are very angry with the Yorubas for the seeming deception or sabotage during the civil war no such coordinated plan to bring harm to Yorubas exist. How to get the Yorubas to accept this altruistic situation has proven impossible as they have sworn never to believe the Igbos. As such a majority of their elites prefer to go to the Hausa/fulanis for alliance to suppress Ndigbo even if they wouldn't benefit much from the partnership. The situation is not funny as the future for Nigeria remains bleak with such an arrangement. Let me stop here. 3 Likes |

ILIDEFI: Erm, Adekunle was fine soldier and a war-time general, and he answered questions posed to him by foreign journalists, just like any war-time general would, albeit a tad bit over-the-top, perhaps due to youthful exuberance. It was blown out of proportion cos the war was more of a propaganda war, than a real war (that was how one-sided it was). However, was any massacre of Igbos recorded under his watch? - Hell No. I believe all the massacres of Igbos were under the watch of Northern officers. And they had Chadians/Nigeriens who were sweepers, and they did all the killings for them. Just thank ya stars Yorubas didn't go on a killing spree of Igbos - they would've wiped out 80% of Igbo population, if they wanted to. |

joeyfire: Lol. Ms. Jada Fire, by end of 1968, Nigeria had already overrun about 80% of Biafra land, with only a small enclave left. And the death on both sides combined, based on British estimates was between 70,000-100,000. So, how did Biafra kill half-a-million soldiers, while running for their lives, in the last one year of the war? Also, how did they lose a whooping 3 million people within the same period? Additionally, if you check the munitions supplied/bought during the war by Nigeria, they were mostly small arms. And they never attacked civilians, apart from those who were collateral damage and victims of aerial bombings. So, what damage would that have done? That war was the biggest propaganda war in history, I tell ya. Even during the same period, the US was engaged in a war with Vietnam, and despite the US dropping millions of bombs on Vietnam and the use of all kinds of weapons - they never killed up-to 2 million Vietnamese. Gimme a break! |
Re: Historical Photos Of Biafran Soldiers At A Military Base Near Owerri by Nobody: 2:02pm On Apr 27, 2015 |
SirShymexx: Well, there was just no way Biafran soldiers would have won the war. It was just impossible, but they gave a good fight. Yes, yorubas were a bit silent during the war. They were not so involved, unlike Hausas. Part of the version of the story I know indicated that Awo agreed with Ojukwu that they were both going to ask for cessation from Nigeria, only for him to pull out after Ojukwu declared for Biafra. If Awo had declared for Oduduwa nation, there wouldn't have been war, cos the northerners wouldn't have been able to face both sides. Biafra was supposed to lose the war cos they didn't have what it took to execute the war, whether in terms of funds or ammunition. If Biafra had equal strength of ammunition and funds as Nigeria, believe me, the war wouldn't have been lost easily. Stories abound of the ingenuity of Biafrans during d war, despite how under equipped they were. As for Yorubas going for the kill, well you guys obviously can't fight a war. Fighting is about mind, not mouth. Yorubas can only fight verbal war. If it were to be a war between Yorubas and Biafrans, Yoruba land would have been annexed to Biafra by now. Lol. Anyway, I still feel the war was needless. We would have been better without d war. 3 Likes |

peppyluv02: I so much love that man in military uniform. His vision, his doggedness, his sagacity, second to none among his contemporary. Like all humans, he erred but he rose above that leaving behind an enduring legacy. A legacy which unfortunately, the ''liliputians'', the ''wannabes'', the ''ignoramuses'' he left behind are rubbishing in the name of Biafra. The Ikemba was a great Nigerian who was recorded in history as well read, exposed, intelligent and never given to pettiness. To fit into his shoe or want to uphold his legacy, one would need to be at par with some of his traits as identified above or at least be of elevated mind and not the Ariaria trader disposition as being exhibited by some (most) guys here on Nairaland! 2 Likes |

If Biafra was defeated by 1968 how come by October 1969 the FG forces in Owerri were massacred with about 300 men survivng out of 3000 under Etuk who had held the city? ILIDEFI: Brev, I'm not trying to get too scholarly with what I'm positing - I'm just doing the most objective summation, of the different academic sources I've been able to read. And discussions with folks from my fam, who were in naij then and part of certain things I won't disclose here. I'm glad you agree with me that it was mission impossible and a suicidal war, albeit they were lucky the Nigerian side was somewhat sane, largely due to the Yorubas. That adventure can be compared to the Operation Mikado, the suicidal plan, by the British SAS forces during the Falklands war, which was later abandoned. I don't want to get involved in the agreement or lack thereof between Awo and Ojukwu. That was another fable, but a story for another day. I think that has been over-flogged on this forum by the old heads. However, the only reason why the Yorubas never went on killing spree of vulnerable Igbos was because there was no reason to - not because they couldn't fight. It was a war between the North and Igbos, they were dragged into it by the Igbos with the invasion of Yorubaland, and never ending bombing of Lagos. And in war-time, once you join the ranks of others to fight a common enemy to achieve a certain goal - you have to fight till the end. Also, I would say the Yorubas won the war for the North cos of the victories were by troops led by Yoruba officers and regiments with mostly Yoruba soldiers. And don't forget Awolowo was also instrumental in how the war ended. You lot are just lucky that war wasn't between Igbos and the North with the minorities. They would've killed all Igbos alive and the unborn ones. Just don't make the same mistakes again. |

joeyfire: Lol. Ms. Jada Fire, Adekunle was a Brigadier (General), and I doubt all the military formations of the Nigerian army back was what it should be. So, let's just say Adekunle played the role of a 2-star general (Major Gen.) as a 1-star general due to lack of availability of officers with higher ranks in Nigerian army back then. And Lt. Col Etuk played the role of a 1-star general by leading a brigade. However, how did they arrive at the magical 3,000 figure, when it's open knowledge that the military formations of the Nigerian army back then wasn't what it was meant to be? Also, I believe the Nigerian army suffered its biggest casualties at Abagana, and they lost less than 200 soldiers. So, how did Lt. Col. Etuk lose 2,700 men (according to ya jejune tale), yet folks still put the Abagana disaster above it? Care to educate me, Ms. Jada Fire? |
