Have been arguing this out with guys in my Hood.
I need more clarifications after listening to STV Boss yesterday, the Senator elect- Ben Bruce during the STV Awards, on how he wants to advocate for the slash in the Monstrous allowances given to Law makers.
How feasible is this, who has the power.

@OP: The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission determines the remuneration of Public office holders. However, the commission is guided by law of the Parliament (NAsS). The allocation cannot be modified or reviewed by the President except the law establishing it is amended by members of National Assembly. In other words, they still have the key. The best a President can do is to persuade members of NASS to amend the law guiding RMAFC. Otherwise, he can only make empty rant. He can't even change what his VP, Ministers, SAs, SSAs or even himself earn. He can only decide to forfeit a percentage of his income. As for the NASS, I bet you that any bill to amend the law guiding RMAFC will be killed upon arrival.

Does it mean that if our lawmakers choose to pay themselves N1bn monthly,it cannot be in anyway be challenged? Has RMAFC not found anything faulty about how much each lawmaker takes home monthly. In fact, how is the head of RMAFC chosen? So many things need to be checked. Their salaries & allowances should be within the same range as those in other countries across the world. Enough of all these Jamboree when the common man cannot is left to struggle with a day's meal out there.

Truly said, that is why i brought it here so that we may learn and also air our views, Ben Bruce speech was really on point, but Who heads this body called RMAFAC?, How are they chosen to be there? Are they cabals equally?? Because if you leave it for the senators alone, they will sit on it till eternity. So many questions Nigerians need to know

Lalastical and the mods, you can do the needful. Thanks

I get your Point Barcanista, but we really need to know who sits the RMAFC on the throne of dishing out these Millions/Billions to these Senators. How are they appointed? Are they the untouchables in the Country (CABALS), So many questions demanding so many answers !!!

But if the masses are really tired and ready for change, then it is achievable. I don't trust those people slashing that pay packet pay-ghana-must-come

The RMAFC is headed by a Chairman who is the Chief Executive. He's nominated by the President but approved by the Senate. He cannot be fired by the President at will. They have guideline and laws that they work with to determine the renumeration of public office holders .

The Head of RMAFC is chosen by the President but approved by the Senate. Most times party loyalists and politicians occupies the position. The position is so sensitive that you can't just bring someone that will "spoil" business for the Senators and expect that the person will be approved. Even at that, the RMAFC have boards that deliberate on key decisions. The Chairman can't just do as it pleases. That is he can't wake up and slash the pay of office holders just like that even if he wishes to. It will be a collective decision of the Board and the National Assembly (to amend certain section of the law establishing the body).

The masses can only achieve that through a Referandum or violent uprising.

Are the masses willing to storm the RMAFC to pressure it into reducing the annoying salaries of these lazy fools? No, they can't! We're only good in making noise. No people gets good governance on a platter!

I'm yet to read about a country that at one time or another, had never experienced some kind of uproar and is developed today. The forces of corruption and wwickedness cannot be fought by the government alone; we must join in the fray!
They will rather engage in tribal war. Idiots!

Can the RMAFC take such a decision without the consent of the legislators?

It clearly states this- " A member of the Senate or of the
House of Representatives shall receive
such salary and other allowances as
Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and
Fiscal Commission may determine"

but February this year, the senators 'AGREED' to cut their budget by 25%

Very GOOD Topic to discuss! Thanks OP.

Side Note: High Paying Jobs where riches is obtain very Fast attracts the wrong type of people to it. Take for instance Drug trafficking, Human trafficking, Bank robbery, Internet fraud etc attracts wrong kind of persons- people capable of doing crime.

Power and Fame is dangerous on their own, now Nigerian Legislators have a tri-factor: Riches, Fame and Power; so it attracts Ex-drug baron, Ex-criminals,Ex- Militants, Ex-thugs etc people with questionable morals.

These ones are not there to legislate at all, they are there for the National cake. Reduction in their Salary and Allowance will naturally discourage Bad elements from the legislature, that is what ALMOST EVERY COUNTRY AROUND THE WORLD DID- being a legislator does not make citizens among the riches men in some other countries, it only makes them famous and powerful.

These are some of the basic facts in this country, most APC supporters never heard about angry. They thought emperor Jonathan had the power of life and death in his hands. They are all in for a great surprise come May 29. Imagine, APC in Osun state telling their people, Buhari will increase their allocation undecided

@ atlwireless, this is never aligned to Political Party affiliations or bickerings.
The solution to this consumption of 3% of the National Budget by these guys are what is being sought after. Morever, Nobody in power has ever raised this issue since theinception of this democratic dispensation.

You probably listened and watched a different campaign in the last 5 years in this country. The fake and pretentious progressives in this country have had the votes needed to make the change needed with the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and
Fiscal Commission act if they wanted. Why couldn't all the Mr clean in NASS led by the new gov elect of Sokoto, make any change to the revenue formula. Even the 3% was because NOI insisted on the NASS making some cuts, this earned her enemies in the NASS, for daring to ask for cuts from them. The loudest opposition to these cuts are in charge today.

There are no solutions as things stand today, because the structural change this country needs is viewed with fear and trepidation in some sections of this country. Many of you hate the truth, because you want to pretend yesterday never happened.
