Once A Cheater Always A Cheater; 7 Surprising Facts About Infidelity by babeface3: 11:44pm On Jun 11, 2015
INFIDELITY CAN BE IN YOUR GENES
Cheating may run in the family, specifically your genes. Women with certain mutations of a receptor gene for vasopressin — a hormone that is synthesized in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary — are more likely to be infidels, according to a recent study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior. Vasopressin affects trust and empathy levels, which play an important role in bonding, social behavior, and sexual motivation. This suggests there are biological underpinnings to this risky sexual behavior.

At a young age, society trains our psyche to expect to meet the one, get married, have kids, and grow old together. Playground songs like “first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in a baby carriage!” make love and relationships seem one-dimensional. Although in monogamous relationships commitment means no playing around, sometimes the inevitable happens — infidelity. Cheating is a common occurrence in monogamous relationships. According to a study from the University of Chicago, 22 percent of married men and 15 percent of married women have cheated at least once. This all depends on one’s definition of cheating, but the majority does consider sexual intercourse or MouthAction to be cheating, while other behaviors like kissing or sexual Webcamming fall into gray areas. Infidelity can occur at any time in a relationship, with problems in the relationship being the main reason people cheat. However, it’s not always a sign that something is wrong in a relationship. Holly LaBarbera, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Fremont, Calif., told Medical Daily in an email, “Sometimes one partner meets someone with whom they fall in love. Sometimes one partner is unhappy themselves and a new relationship makes them feel alive and special in a way they haven't felt in a long time. Sometimes cheating has nothing to do with the other partner.” Read on for surprising facts about infidelity that every person in a relationship should know.

MOST MEN ARE STILL IN LOVE WHEN THEY CHEAT
Contrary to popular belief, men who cheat actually claim to be happy in their marriages. A study by Rutgers University found that 56 percent of men and 34 percent of women who had extramarital affairs claimed to be happy or very happy in their marriages. In fact, many of these spouses claimed to still be in love with their wives when they cheated.April Masini, relationship expert and author, believes the main reason that people in happy marriages cheat is because one of them doesn't feel the way they want to in the marriage. "Whether it's successful, heroic, or sexual — the husband or wife isn't getting these feelings from a spouse, and either looks for those feelings elsewhere, or is susceptible to cheating because they get those feelings elsewhere, without seeking them out," she told Medical Daily in an email.

INFIDELITY IS NOT THE LEADING CAUSE OF DIVORCE
Cheating can be grounds for a marriage ending, but it's not the main cause of divorce. The reason why couples divorce is because they fall out of love, according to a 2011 survey conducted by Grant Thornton UK LLP. Infidelity ranked second on the list, followed by unreasonable behavior, midlife crisis, and emotional/physical abuse. This suggests couples are willing to work through infidelity than rekindle the flame in a loveless relationship."A single instance of infidelity may not lead to divorce, especially if the couple uses it as a wake-up call and fix the underlying problems," Dr. Tina B. Tessina, a psychotherapist in Long Beach, Calif., and author of Money, Sex and Kids: Stop Fighting about the Three Things That Can Ruin Your Marriage, told Medical Daily in an email. It is the repeated instances of cheating that usually lead to divorce, "unless the couple has another reason for staying together, such as a shared business or children," according to Tessina.

WOMEN THINK MEN WITH DEEP VOICES ARE MORE LIKELY TO CHEAT
Women find men who sound like Barry White more attractive, but only for short-term relationships, because they're more likely to cheat. In a 2013 study published in the journal Behavioral Ecology, researchers found when women listened to men's voices to determine which guys were more inclined to cheat, and which they were most attracted to for long- and short-term, deep-voiced men got the shorter end of the stick. They were considered to be more suitable for a fling, where fidelity was not a concern.

WOMEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO CHEAT IF A MAN HAS BIG TESTICLES
Bigger isn't always better, men, especially when it comes to cheating. The bigger a man's Instruments, the more likely a woman will cheat, according to a study at the University of Oslo. In the study, the female partners of primates, specifically bonobos with large testicles, were more likely to have other sexual relationships. In context, human testicles are one-and-a-half times larger than those of gorillas.

MEN WHO CHEAT ARE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE HEART ATTACKS
Affairs can literally break hearts. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found men who cheat on their wives are more likely to suffer "sudden coital death" when having sex with their mistresses in an unknown place, compared to when they're having sex with their wives at home. Although the precise reasons for the increase in heart attack death are unclear, researchers suggest it can be a guilty conscience, stress from keeping the affair a secret, and even the stress of wining, dining, and satisfying a woman who is likely to be younger than the man's wife.

INFIDELITY INCREASES A MAN’S CHANCE OF A BROKEN PENIS
Cheating is risky business and it could cost men their penis, too. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found out of 16 cases of penile fracture between 2007 and 2011 that required surgery, half of the patients admitted to fracturing their joysticks during an extramarital affair. The tear happens when the tunica albuginea — the fibrous membrane that surrounds the tissue in the center of the penis — is torn while an erect penis is bent or buckled. These men were not only engaging in extramarital affairs when they were injured, but they were also having sex in unusual locations that were outside the bedroom.
