I just exited myself from the bank. Though I had a plan b. The two years I spent there as a sales person can be described as the most excruciating part of my life. A life of daily sack threat, daily weekly and monthly meetings, wicked kpi's time consumption etc. I was stressed beyond my capacity. Sincerely I wonder if my superiors really enjoy the job as they claim. I thank God I can now breathe a sigh of relief. This is not to say I gained nothing from the bank. Right now I am a formidable salesman. I can market Nairaland to Seun and he will buy it. I have been highly groomed in the financial services industry. I am more exposed to various kinds of business. Relationship management was an A course to me. I have transformed from that cool reseverd guy to a bold networker. My dress sense has greatly improved. I am now more efficient and effective. Keep to the time etc.. Also, from a broke ass nigger I have been able to rent and furnish my apartment to a good taste, acquired a car, little savings. Also looking forward to acquire a land. I thank God for all sha. 30 Likes 2 Shares |

Best option is make quality friends while working in the bank. Know their businesses, research on tehm and invest in similar businesses. Finally get ready to quit any time you feel like. Banking is not easy, whether Operations or Business Banking but if you're in Business banking, you'll be better exposed on how businesses work. Most importantly, don't invest so much in flamboyance. It has killed a lot of bankers especially when they were told to go. Go for programmes in Business development, financial management, Sales and marketing, and Customer service. 4 Likes 1 Share |

No way forward! Global economic downturn/Recession or one of those economic jargons related to bad financial times coupled with lazy banking activities to generate money(unrealistic bank charges) by Nigerian banks will always make the banks demand unrealistic targets from its employees to stay afloat. It's a Dog-Eat-Dog World, if you can not take the heat, get out of the kitchen(bank). |

Abeg, which other industry can one fit in after working in banking operations for 10 years? I can't seem to find its relevance in other non-banking industry. I so much dislike this job, more so, the thought of ending up in marketing is scary. I need to move to some other industry. Someone please help. It's an emergency. |

Working in the bank is an advance slavery. I worked in the bank for 5 solid years before I was booted out. I lived at Abule egba, joining staff bus at 5:30 everyday and I worked at VI. I at times got home around 11:30pm everyday. It was when I was sacked that I realized that I was living another man's life. I looked at the reward but could not see any. The only gain was the tag former banker. For almost 6 months I couldn't reason on next agenda. But thank God that my eyes was opened to the need and I filled it. I studied statistics and mathematics, I used the privilege to start a tutorial class in my vicinity and today, it is growing from strength to strength. I looked back and tell myself now that working for urself is the best way to realized one's potential. Most important, I have time to think on my own and plan my family. 15 Likes 2 Shares |

dandollar1: Save up, start a business...you must have a plan b. Start the business as soon as tomorrow morning. Don't wait till you have enough funds to get you a business that will fund your TM Lewin addiction. Get something small. Sell eggs wholesale for example. Get a small bar or barbing salon etc. You will leave that bank one day....when you leave, what will you 'bank' on? 3 Likes |

First of all, I will like to correct this impression that, if you work in a bank, you are a banker.you are not a banker! or should we say a cleaner in a bank is a banker or dispatch rider is a banker as well?, you are just an ordinary employee like a sales girl or marketer in any other industry. the only difference between you and that person working in another industry is you are always well dressed to look attractive to customers. Back to the matter, there is no technicality in banking work! yes i mean it, a smart secondary school graduate will perform excellently in virtually every department except sensitive departments in a bank, and this is the reason why banks recruit all Toms, Dicks and Harry at graduate level because they assumed an average graduate will at least be better and trainable My friend there is no career path in banking sector per say, especially now that IT (information technology) is gradually taking the space of professionals and reducing office space for caring out daily banking operations.what this portends is the so called chartered bankers and allied professionals will be phased out in the nearest future as all banks in Nigeria and beyond are seriously looking for ways to reduce overhead cost. if you are still in banking job, dont be too happy, start planning for career switch, by applying for professional courses that can land you job in another sector. that is my two kobo!! 6 Likes |

Adesiji77: Bruv its not about marketing or operations. In my days, i was core back office, what we call support services across the business lines. In short i was in Legal Services. My first quarter target was N80m. At the end of the quarter when i had not brought a dime, the target was rolled over to N160m. By the third quarter when it was rolled to N240m, i went on leave and switched over to Globacom. I have said it severally, may i or any of my loved ones never have to work for any bank again. 12 Likes |

Please, where did Nigerian banks derive their marketing strategy model from? In which other country do banks legally send other peoples' daughters out to "subconsciously prostitute" from money in the name of achieving set financial targets? Wouldn't it be more economical to employ prostitutes than to employ graduates who u end up paying 30k at the end of the month after undergoing all that stress? Besides, this una target no dey get ceiling? What is the objective of this monthly target? Is it for the management's suit allowance or for branch manager's tithe? God dey... The stress on our youth is too much o. May we not hear that a staff brought a gun to Monday morning meeting in order settle a score with the "demons" sent from his/her village. |

sademola: That definition banker is a misnormer. I never claimed to be one, i knew i worked in a bank. I was in specialized services but underwent all the trainings that would have equipped me to work anywhere else in the operations of the bank. A person working in a bank is a bank staff. And no special training is required before you join. However you may choose to develop yourself as a chartered banker which however does nothing much to your life if you are not bringing in liabilities or deposits as they call it. 1 Like |

If you must excel in banking or see it as a long term venture, start by doing all the Professional exams possible to make you indispensable. Well for me, I am a scientist and always one, banking came at the right time as boys had trekked tirelessly . I go to MPR and look at the verbose jargon and laugh cuz i know this ain't my field. Though banking has given me enough money for my academeic pursuits, I still feel unfulfilled with the crazy deposit drive and tirade by group heads and divisional heads everyday. Banking in our times is quite lucrative if you are a full staff, but it requires ball of steel and all the fruits of the Spirit especially Long suffering . 6 Likes 1 Share |

Just when i'm thinking of leaving my present Federal job as Admin officer for First bank job as a permanent staff. Truth is, I worked in Stanbic before and enjoyed the challenges and appreciated the fact that, your pay would be commensurate with your performance. Unlike Govt job where anything goes. Watch movies from morning till evening; you will still be paid same amount as the guy that works his ass out. Furthermore, i get really jealous seeing what my banker friends have been able to achieve within their short stint with banks especially peeps in First and Union banks compared to the fact that i've been working for two years now with govt with little or nothing to show for it. Bottom line is, go for what will suit ur short cum long term goal. Not everybody will be sacked in the bank as not everybody can withstand the bore and unchallenging Govt works. Entrepreneurship is still the best. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Denn: They are not bankers!!! You can only be a banker after some training in the act/profession. One can be a school dropout and turn out to be fantastic banker after some basic training and experience on the job. I've got some school mates and friends that studied sciences and engineering but are excellent and high flying bankers. How did they turned to be bankers? Training, courses, exposure and experience from the job. You can't just call yourself a banker just because you are paid salaries from a banking outfit!!! Are the drivers and securities bankers too? |
