Manchester United's XI All But Confirmed For Barcelona Game Manchester United take on Barcelona today in what should be one of the best friendlies of pre-season. Louis van Gaal has added a number of talents to his squad since the transfer window, including Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin. It is expected the Dutch manager will keep spending, but how will the current team perform against the Champions League winners? It we're going off which Manchester United players were training together yesterday, then Daley Blind will play at centre back alongside Phil Jones against Barcelona tomorrow. Luckily, no Lionel Messi or Neymar will feature for the Spanish giants. Manchester United players training yesterday, Shaw, Darmian, Jones, Blind; Schneiderlin, Carrick; Mata, Young, Depay; Rooney together. Going by who was in training together, this is the team to face Barcelona today.

Angel Di Maria: PSG Target To Join Manchester United Tour Angel Di Maria is expected to join Manchester United on their tour of the USA on Saturday despite speculation about a move to Paris St-Germain. Reports suggested the French Ligue 1 champions were ready to announce Di Maria's £45m signing this weekend. But the Argentina winger has told boss Louis van Gaal he will return with the other players who have had extended breaks because of international duty. "I expect him tomorrow," said Van Gaal in San Jose on Friday. "We have communicated on that. Di Maria, Marcos Rojo and Javier Hernandez have responded." After wins over Club America and San Jose Earthquakes, United face Spanish champions Barcelona on Saturday (21:00 BST), before completing their tour with a game against PSG on Wednesday, 29 July. Di Maria, who arrived at Old Trafford for £59.7m from Real Madrid last summer, will not be at the Barcelona game in Santa Clara, although his absence was always planned. The United manager was speaking alongside captain Wayne Rooney at a news conference at the Avaya Stadium to preview the game against the La Liga champions, which will attract a crowd of over 60,000. The Dutchman, 63, confirmed goalkeeper David De Gea, a Real Madrid target, would play after missing the first two tour games through injury, but new signing Bastian Schweinsteiger will not. Van Gaal on transfer stories "I never answer the question because I cannot. I want to but it is not good for Manchester United, for the players and for me. "Every word is one word too much. I have read a lot of interesting players that Manchester United could buy. It is not true with every player but I cannot say that." Rooney talks trophies and transfers "The players we have brought in are experienced and successful. "I am sure they will add a lot to the team. I can try to help them learn about the history of the club and what is expected to be at this club and be successful. But it is down to the players to prove themselves and create their own history. "A lot of work has been put by the manager and the backroom staff on the personalities of the players before they came in. From what I have seen, they will be great signings." Rooney has won five Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy during his time at Old Trafford. Rooney on facing Barcelona "They have been probably the best team in Europe over the last few years. "It is down to us to prove we are as good as them. Tomorrow will show us where we are. At the beginning of last season the manager told us it would take a while to adapt to the changes. As a group of players we didn't think it would but obviously it did. "From Christmas, I felt we understood exactly what the manager wanted from us and did well, particularly in the big games. It was the games we expected to win where we disappointed ourselves." 1 Like |

Pedro and muller are highly overrated. Their brilliance has more to do with the teams they play for than their talent. |

Rooney: Man Utd Squad Have Clicked With Van Gaal Philosophy The Dutchman won just one of his opening six games in charge at of the club, but his captain is far more positive 12 months on Wayne Rooney says the Manchester United squad have finally adapted fully to Louis van Gaal's philosophy. United won just one of Van Gaal's first six games in charge last term, including an embarrassing 4-0 League Cup defeat to MK Dons and a stunning 5-3 reverse at Leicester City. However, 12 months into Van Gaal's tenure and with new arrivals Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian, Rooney is expecting United to hit the ground running. "At the beginning of last season the manager told us it would take a while to adapt to the changes," he told reporters. "As a group of players you don't think it will but towards the end of the season, from Christmas, I felt we played some great football, understood exactly what the manager wanted from us and particularly in the big games we did really well. "We can take that as positives. It was the games we expected to win where we disappointed ourselves. We know what is expected of us and what we have to do and are positive and excited for the season." |

Match Preview: FC Barcelona vs Manchester United At 1.00pm PST and 10.00pm CET, two of Europe's biggest clubs go face to face at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, California is the venue for FC Barcelona’s second friendly of the 2015/16 preseason, which kicks off at 1.00pm PST and 10.00pm CET on Saturday 25 July. The 68,500 capacity venue is expected to be packed for the International Champions Cup match with Manchester United , the side Barça beat in the final of the Champions League in both 2009 and 2011. Team News Barça have been training at the Cox Stadium at San Francisco State University with a squad of 24 players: Ter Stegen, Masip, Piqué, Rakitic, Sergio, Pedro, Iniesta, Luis Suárez, Rafinha, Bartra, Douglas, Jordi Alba, S. Roberto, Adriano, Vermaelen, Mathieu, Arda Turan, Aleix Vidal, Sandro, Munir and Halilovic from the first team and and three from the reserves (José Suárez, Samper and Gumbau). The only absentees are the five South Americans that were involved in the Copa America in Chile (Claudio Bravo, Leo Messi, Javier Mascherano, Dani Alves and Neymar), who are still on vacation. Neither Arda Turan nor Aleix Vidal will be able to play due to the FIFA suspension but with lenient rules regarding substitutions in this tournament, there should be run-outs for most of other members of the squad in this fixture. Against LA Galaxy on Tuesday, manager Luis Enrique made ten changes to his team in the second half. After two trophy-less years, Manchester United have their sights set on big things this season. The squad has been bolstered by the arrivals of Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger as they prepare for the start of the Premiership season on August 8. Schweinsteiger will miss the Barça game with a minor injury, but goalkeeper David De Gea is expected to start. Despite rumours regarding the future of Angel Di Maria, manager Louis Van Gaal has insisted that the Argentine striker is joining up with the squad in the US, but that he will not be ready to play any part in this game. Coaches’ Viewpoint Asked for his impressions after Barça played their first preseason fixture against LA Galaxy, Luis Enrique commented that “I liked the team because we were intense and we did not commit any serious errors, but we can improve in all areas. Without any doubt, we will be the team to beat but we have to improve on the field. Today we did well but we have to do that again and better.” On the eve of the match against the side he managed for two spells, Louis Van Gaal said that "it is fantastic to play against Barcelona because then you know a little bit if you are at a certain level ... Of course I know that this is pre-season. We know very well that winning is not the real truth because in the season you have to show it - not in the pre-season. The performance is more important than the result." Form Guide On Tuesday, FC Barcelona played the Los Angeles Galaxy in their first game since the Champions League Final. In a confident and dominant performance, goals from Luis Suárez and Sergi Roberto either side of half-time put them into a 2-0 lead, with the MLS champions grabbing a consolation goal in the final play of the match. Barça have one more game in America before returning to Europe, against Chelsea on Wednesday 29 at 2.00am CET. Manchester United will need to get through a qualifying match in order to secure a berth in this season’s Champions League. So far, their preparations in America have gone to plan. They beat Club America of Mexico 1-0 in their opening ICC fixture, new signing Schneiderlin scoring the only goal after just five minutes. And then they defeated MLS side San José Earthquakes 3-1 with goals from Juan Mata, Memphis Depay and Andreas Pereira. History There have been plenty of classic encounters between these two sides over the years, one of the most memorable being the 1991 Cup Winners Cup Final in Rotterdam , in which Mark Hughes scored twice against his former team in a 2-1 win for United. After twice crossing paths in the Champions League group stage, they met in the semi-finals in 2008. Eventual champions United advanced to the final after Paul Scholes scored the only goal in 180 minutes of football. But Barça got their revenge. In the 2009 final in Rome and then again at Wembley in 2011, the Catalans defeated the Red Devils to win their third and fourth European titles. The last time the sides met was also in a preseason friendly in the States. Man United beat an understrength Barça 2-1 in Washington with goals from Nani and Owen, Thiago pulling one back for FCB. |

Barcelona 1-3 Manchester United: Rooney, Lingard & Januzaj Strike To See Off Champions League Holders Wayne Rooney leads Manchester United to an impressive win over European champions FC Barcelona! Wayne Rooney scored on a header in the eighth minute off Ashley Young's corner kick, and Manchester United kept the pressure on all afternoon to beat Barcelona 3-1 on Saturday and stay unbeaten during its preseason tour in the United States. Jesse Lingard added the Red Devils' second goal on a cross by Tyler Blackett in the 65th, just two minutes after coach Louis van Gaal subbed out his entire starting 11 to play the second team. Adnan Januzaj scored for Man United in the 90th minute, some 30 seconds after Rafinha got Barcelona on the board in the 90th. The Red Devils improved to 3-0 in the International Champions Cup, this time getting the best of Luis Suarez and Barca while playing under clear skies for a sellout crowd of 68,416 at the $1.3 billion home of the San Francisco 49ers. Rooney raised his arms in delight after his goal, and coach Louis van Gaal got a good look at what he hinted would be his starting 11 for the Premier League opener Aug. 8 against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. Van Gaal subbed his entire team in the 63rd minute as planned. Now, his team will wrap up its preseason tour against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday at Chicago's Soldier Field. UEFA Champions League winner Barcelona will look back on its missed chances. Luis Suarez hit long shots off each post, and Ivan Rakitic's ball just skimmed the top of the net in the 59th. Suarez had a goal negated for being offside in the 61st, though it appeared he was fouled in the box by Daley Blind moments earlier. And in the sixth minute, Sergi Roberto went 1-on-1 with Man United goalkeeper David De Gea, who made a charging stop. De Gea returned after missing the first two matches of the tour with an undisclosed injury. Barca beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 on Tuesday night in front a record 93,226 at the Rose Bowl in the team's first game of its preseason tour in the U.S. Barcelona will face Premier League champion Chelsea on Tuesday at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. The La Liga champion is playing without Lionel Messi and Neymar as both are skipping the three-game tour to be fresh for games that count. Rooney got away from defender Adriano for an open look on his goal. Young had fouled early in the match leading to a free kick for Barca. Suarez's ball from 20 yards hit the right post in the fourth minute, then off the left post in the 43rd. De Gea stopped another Suarez shot from about 6 yards just more than a minute later. In the 28th minute, Young found himself open for a nice look but Barca goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen blocked the ball away. And the Reds threatened again in the 32nd with a flurry of chances. Both teams passed well in creating first- half opportunities. Manchester United nearly had another in the 68th minute when Januzaj sent a shot just wide of the left post. The field received new sod during the past week following a pair of recent concerts. Levi's Stadium had numerous problems with the grass during the NFL team's inaugural season here last year, and chunks of sod and sand came loose Saturday. Man United newcomer Bastian Schweinsteiger of Germany sat out with a minor injury van Gaal said he sustained in training. Schweinsteiger had appeared in the two previous exhibition games as a second-half substitute after joining his new team. Van Gaal had said expected Angel Di Maria to join the club Saturday but he wasn't on the sideline. Van Gaal had previously said he wouldn't play. Defender Marcos Rojo and forward Javier Hernandez did join Man United after receiving time off following play in the Copa America and Gold Cup. |

Rooney On Target As United Down Barca Wayne Rooney got on the scoresheet as Manchester United scored a morale-boosting 3-1 friendly victory over European champions Barcelona in Santa Clara, United States, on Saturday. Rooney, Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj got United's goals to settle an entertaining game in front of 68,416 fans at the Levi's Stadium, home of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. Rafinha scored a late consolation for Barcelona in the 90th minute, lashing home a shot before Januzaj netted United's third just 30 seconds later. Barcelona, missing superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar after their exertions in the Copa America, were left ruing a series of chances which hit the woodwork. Barcelona could have been 2-0 up within the opening minutes, Luis Suarez crashing a free- kick off the post after only four minutes with United goalkeeper David De Gea beaten. Moments later De Gea was pressed into action when Sergi Roberto burst through only to shoot directly at the United keeper with the goal at his mercy. United made Barcelona pay for their early profligacy in the seventh minute when Rooney headed the Red Devils into the lead, punishing slack marking to power Ashley Young's corner into the net past Marc Andre Ter Stegen. The goal boosted United and they grew in confidence, with Memphis Depay's movement and interplay again catching the eye for United. United might have added to their lead in the 25th minute when good work by Juan Mata down the right flank saw Rooney go clear in the box, rounding Ter Stegen but just unable to cut back to United's attack. Young meanwhile should have doubled United's lead in the 28th minute. The left winger advanced purposefully into Barcelona territory and as defenders backed off was presented with a clear shot at goal. The midfielder's shot was too close to Ter Stegen however and the Barcelona keeper was able to parry a reflex save to safety. At the other end Barcelona continued to chase an equaliser and Suarez was left cursing the woodwork once more on 43 minutes when his shot from the edge of the area hit the opposite upright. Barcelona were unlucky not to claim an equaliser just after the hour mark, when Suarez looked to have been fouled by Daley Blind in the penalty area. In the same move Suarez then finished low past De Gea only to be ruled offside. United rang the changes on 63 minutes, removing their entire starting XI as van Gaal indicated he would do before the match. The change yielded instant results, with Tyler Blackett crossing low from the left for Lingard to tuck away the finish for 2-0. United might even have extended their lead moments later when Januzaj latched onto a long ball and shot just wide. Barcelona kept probing for a goal, only for the woodwork to deny them once more in the 72nd minute when Munir El Haddadi's header struck the post. |

Angel Di Maria Transfer News: Latest Details, Rumours on Manchester United Star Louis Van Gaal: Angel Di Maria was supposed to join Manchester United in San Jose, but was not on the plane. Angel Di Maria is nearing a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain despite predicting on June 4 he would start next season at Manchester United. Bayern Munich had been monitoring the Argentinian star, but the Ligue 1 champions appear to have sealed the signing of the player. United and PSG 'Reach Agreement' on Di Maria Deal; Van Gaal Expects Him to Play in Preseason Friday, July 24 "I expect him [Di Maria] tomorrow, because we have communicated that and they have responded on that," said Van Gaal, according to David McDonnell of the Daily Mirror. "I am not answering questions about transfers or the process. He [Di Maria] cannot play in the game, because we have to build him up. "I have heard he was not on the plane. I cannot say anything. Di Maria I don't know why," Van Gaal said. Jonathan Green of the Daily Star reported Manchester United have accepted a €65m (£45.5m) offer for the winger, according to France Football. According to the Guardian's Jamie Jackson on July 15, van Gaal was still hopeful Di Maria would stay at United, although he had expressed interest in PSG's Edinson Cavani as part of a potential swap deal. Personal terms have already been agreed between Di Maria and PSG, according to Le Parisien, which reported on July 14 the winger accepted a five-year deal with the French club. Bayern also held talks, according to Bild, but it seems PSG have got their man. Contract Stipulation Blocked Barca Move; Di Maria Admits United Struggles Wednesday, June 24 Madrid reportedly placed a clause in Di Maria's contract before he headed to United which excluded him from transferring to potential suitors Barcelona, according to Mundo Deportivo. Regardless, Di Maria said on June 5 he expected his immediate future to remain at Old Trafford. "It was a hard season for me . I think it was hard because it was another country and another league, and this league is harder than the Spanish one. So, I couldn ' t adapt myself as I wanted to. Now I will play the Copa America and then I will move back to Manchester for next season and do my best there." After a British-record transfer fee brought Di Maria from Real Madrid to the Red Devils, the midfielder failed to build on a scintillating start, with lack of form, perennial fitness problems and off-field issues conspiring against him. There are plenty of people associated with United who will feel the Red Devils had yet to see the best of this uniquely capricious player. However, it looks as though he has played his last game after just one season at the club. Nonetheless, as we can see here, courtesy of WhoScored.com, statistically, the Old Trafford outfit did perform better in the Premier League with the former Blancos star in the team:

Why Leave? De Gea Returns As Barca Scalp Proves Man Utd Mean Business Wayne Rooney, Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj all found the net as United's build-up to the new campaign continued to gather impressive pace. David de Gea returned to the Manchester United line-up on Saturday to bear witness to the kind of performance which should have him thinking twice about where he may be happier over the coming 12 months. While Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu remains a distinctly possible destination for the Spanish goalkeeper, United's prospects for the season ahead appear to be improving with every run-out following their 3-1 win over Barcelona in Santa Clara. It may have only been a pre-season affair against a Barca side still three matches away from the beginning of their competitive campaign, but the victory at Levi's Stadium was full of the kind of positives Louis van Gaal has been craving for some time. With only 90 minutes remaining before the Dutchman has to make a final decision on his starting XI for the Premier League opener against Tottenham on August 8, the Red Devils are really beginning to take on the visage of a true Van Gaal team. The 63-year-old has asked that his players find "match rhythm" and prove they carry his footballing philosophy, and against the European champions they showed that the double training sessions and carefully-managed match appearances have whipped them into shape ahead of their final run-out against Paris Saint- Germain in Chicago on Wednesday. What's more, there appear to be more answers than questions relating to United's shape and system ahead of the big kick-off. While further additions could yet be on the way, a number of previously problem positions have seemingly been ticked off. Wayne Rooney's claim for a regular run in the lone striker role ahead of three attacking midfielders was helped by his opening goal from an Ashley Young corner, while Luke Shaw and Matteo Darmian appear to have nailed down the first-choice full-back slots after a 2014-15 season which saw nine different players fill the two positions. United did have to do a fair amount of chasing as Barcelona dictated the ball for long spells, and but for the woodwork – which denied Luis Suarez twice and Munir once – the scoreline may have been less forgiving. But their pace on the counter helped to put the Champions League winners on high alert throughout and, albeit Lionel Messi and Neymar were missing from the opposition line-up, any win against Barcelona is not to be sniffed at. Memphis Depay was quiet for the most part but burst into life on occasion when United attacked, and when Van Gaal made 11 changes just after the hour they stretched Barca even more. Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj added goals following swift moves which exposed the Catalans' relative immobility. Add in the fact that United looked compact and composed without the ball for the most part, and it will have greatly pleased Van Gaal. Only once did De Gea have to pull off a truly notable save, stopping with his legs from Sergi Roberto, before being replaced by Sam Johnstone on the hour. And that is also an improvement on last season. We won't truly know how good this United team is until they get their teeth into the Premier League campaign to come, but the signs so far are very good even before the likes of Marcos Rojo, Javier Hernandez and Angel Di Maria either return to the fold or are sold on to make way for more additions. And should De Gea see that this squad is going places, he may yet decide that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. |

Di Maria Set For PSG As Van Gaal Reveals Winger Missed Planned Man Utd Flight The Argentine failed to board a plane headed for United's pre-season camp in San Jose amid links with a move to the French champions. Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed Angel Di Maria missed a flight to join up with the club's pre-season tour of the US, amid reports he is set to join Paris Saint-Germain. Goal revealed earlier in July that Di Maria's agent Jorge Mendes had been in talks with the French champions regarding a move, while PSG boss Laurent Blanc later admitted his club's interest. The Argentine was due to meet the United squad in San Jose after a delayed summer break due to his participation in the Copa America with his national side. But Van Gaal admitted in a press conference following Saturday's 3-1 win over Barcelona in Santa Clara that Di Maria had failed to board the plane and had provided no reason for his absence. "I have heard he was not on the plane. I cannot say anything," he told reporters after his side's 3-1 win over Barcelona. "Marcos Rojo was not on the plane. Di Maria I don't know why." While Rojo was said to have missed his flight due to passport problems, Di Maria's no-show could speed up his likely departure to PSG. And the latest developments could well force United's hand as their record £59.7 million signing looks set to seal his exit following a difficult first season with the club in which he started only 20 league games, scoring three goals. |

AikayDaWrapper: Di Maria's mind was already set for PSG even before he came to Old Trafford. He couldn't go there at that time because of the FIFA FFP regulation rocking PSG which hinder them from signing him. Manchester United was the only good option as at that time so it doesn't come to me as a shock. Like we'll always say, 'No player is bigger than Manchester United'. This will also anger LVG cos he doesn't tolerate such and its not part of his philosophy. I also see Pedro Rodriguez or Nicolas Gaitan signing pulling through this coming week. |

Van Gaal could lead Manchester United to treble- Luis Enrique The Spaniard has tipped the Old Trafford club for glory after coming out on the wrong side of a 3-1 scoreline in a friendly fixture in the US on Saturday. Barcelona coach Luis Enrique believes that Manchester United counterpart Louis van Gaal can inspire the Premier League outfit to a treble this season. The 45-year-old has first-hand experience of the methods of the Dutchman from his time as a player at Camp and says that the former Blaugrana boss is capable of leading the Old Trafford side to glory. “With a coach like Van Gaal and the kind of players they have, it is a team that are going for everything,” Luis Enrique told the media. “In a year a lot of things can happen. We came off the back of a season without a trophy and we won the treble. United could do the same, it’s a great club.” He was speaking after a 3-1 defeat to the Red Devils in Santa Clara and admitted he was disappointed with the conditions at Levi’s Stadium. “It was a shame that that the pitch was so dry. It hurt both teams,” he said. Barcelona hit the frame of the goal on three occasions during the match, with Luis Suarez and Munir the men denied by the woodwork, but the coach was in no mood to bemoan his side’s luck. “Hitting the post is part of the game. Today we have not been as clinical as usual. Aside from hitting the post, we created plenty of chances,” he stated. The Catalans’ next pre-season encounter arrives against Fiorentina on Sunday. |

Di Maria Set For PSG Move The stage appeared to be set Sunday for Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria to join Paris Saint-Germain after spending just the one season at Old Trafford. The future of unsettled Argentine star was thrown into further doubt after it emerged that he had failed to join up with the club's US tour as scheduled in California. United manager Louis van Gaal told reporters after his side's 3-1 friendly victory over Barcelona that Di Maria had failed to board a flight to San Francisco. "I have heard that he's not on the plane so I cannot say anything," van Gaal said. "I have heard that he was not on the plane," he reiterated. Di Maria had been excused from the first part of United's tour after playing in the Copa America. Shortly afterwards, PSG manager Laurent Blanc said in Charlotte, North Carolina where the French champions lost on penalties to Chelsea, that transfer talks were well underway. "It's a very long, drawn-out affair," Blanc said. "Two big clubs are having talks. Let's just wait for the moment and we will see the outcome very shortly. "For the moment, he (Di Maria) is down to play for Manchester against PSG on Wednesday. For the moment, that is. I repeat that rumour has it that this player has every possibility to join Paris Saint Germain, but ... at this moment in time nothing is official." Di Maria joined United last year in a 59.7 million pound ($92.6 million) British record transfer from Real Madrid but has failed to settle during a difficult first season with the Premier League giants. L'Equipe newspaper on Sunday reported that a deal to bring Di Maria to Paris was imminent and that the transfer fee would be around 63million euros ($69million, £45million). "There are some details that still need to be worked out between the club and the player, but there is every chance that he will join up with his future teammates in New Jersey in the coming days or even hours," the paper said. Di Maria would be PSG's big transfer move of the summer as they look to convert their domination of the domestic scene in France onto the European stage with a first-ever victory in the Champions League. Since the Qatar Sports Investments took over the running and financing of the club four years ago, a top player has been added to the squad each summer - Javier Pastore (43million euros) in 2011, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva (more than 60million euros) in 2012, Edinson Cavani (64million euros) in 2013 and David Luiz (50 million euros in 2014). Di Maria would be the latest addition to the glittering array of international talent on show at the Parc des Princes. |

One conclusion we can draw from yesterday's match is that Januzaj is definitely not a winger. He has to be played in central positions as an attacking midfielder, second striker or striker to flourish. |

I would prefer Depay to be deployed as a Winger, probably replacing Ashley Young on the left wing. Rooney should play as No 10, and Chicharito should be allowed to play as a lone Striker! We need Chicharito to score goals. Many chances were thrown away, and I strongly believe if Chicharito is in the match, we might have hammered Barcelona by wide goal margin. My suggestion though |

Manchester United Transfer News: Louis Van Gaal Comments on Need for Galactico Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal revealed he believes his team is in need of another game-changing player in order to keep up with the giants of European football. Despite signing the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin during what has already been a busy summer, the Red Devils manager isn't satisfied, and his comments on Sunday indicate he's looking for a star forward to add both goals and creativity: "Chelsea have Hazard. He can always make goals, he can always make an action and decide a goal. Chelsea also have Willian and Oscar. Manchester City have [Sergio] Agüero, it’s the same type. Barcelona has [Lionel] Messi, Neymar and [Luis] Suárez. We as Manchester United have to compete with these clubs, so we have to look also for that kind of players." When speaking to the English media about the players he already has at his disposal, he made it very clear he wants more: No, you don’ t have a good vision I think. We can use much more creativity. We have Wayne, Mata, Depay, Young, Januzaj, Wilson, Herrera. Young has had a fantastic season, but he is not a Neymar and we have to compete with that kind of class. When it is possible to buy, for a reasonable price, players from that level, we shall do that because they can contribute as they are better. Ronaldo? He may come, but it is not possible. Why not ? Because you have the club [Real], Ronaldo and then you have Manchester United and how much Manchester United want to spend." United appear to be on the verge of selling their top signing from last season, as former Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria seems to be on his way to Paris Saint-Germain. Di Maria was supposed to be the main creative outlet, the star forward Van Gaal apparently so desperately desires. After a promising start, the Argentina international's 2014-15 campaign quickly came crashing down around him, as he never appeared comfortable at Old Trafford. He's not the first star to struggle during his first season in a new league, but unlike others, Di Maria seems determined to start over. While nothing has been made official yet, it seems all but certain he'll be leaving for the French capital very soon. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already welcomed him to the club. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has welcomed reports suggesting PSG are close to agreeing a deal for Man Utd's Angel Di Maria. Van Gaal has plenty of creative talent at his disposal, but the likes of Ashley Young are of a different caliber than Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale, to name a few. Andreas Pereira and Adnan Januzaj have talent to spare, but both still have much to learn and will need at least several more seasons of developing before they can be difference-makers on the highest level. Another addition would be the quickest way to push the team to new heights, but options on the open market may be limited. As Van Gaal suggested himself, someone like Ronaldo simply isn't available at this particular time, no matter how much money the club throws at a possible transfer. The acquisition of Memphis Depay should boost the side's creativity and scoring ability, and while the 21-year-old Dutchman will need some time to adjust to the Premier League, he appears to have the talent to emerge as a world-class option like Neymar or Eden Hazard in just a couple of years. But knowing Van Gaal and the numerous shock signings he has already made during his short tenure as United manager, expect at least one more big star to arrive at Old Trafford before the end of the summer. It's now clear the Dutch manager still isn't happy with the players at his disposal, and when Van Gaal isn't happy, Ed Woodward usually spends. |
