Re-branding: N’Assembly Seeks Source of Funding
•Why 'Heart of Africa project failed-Akunyili

http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=138015

The Joint Committee on Information and Media of the Senate and House of Representatives yesterday took the Information and Communications Minister, Professor Dora Akunyili, to task on the sources of funding for “the re-branding Nigeria ” project.

The committee which engaged her at a public meeting at the National Assembly  said it observed that no provision was made for the project in this year’s budget and wondered how she intended to drive the proccess.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Iformation and Media, Senator Ayogu Eze, said: “We are at pains because we just finished the budget session and you are supposed to interface with the committee in the House and in the Senate but at no point during this consultation did we have project re-branding and the issue of sourcing fund for the project would be a very key issue.

“We want to be assured that we get assured about some of these issues, where the money will come from and the content of what you are going to do,” he said.

His counterpart in the House, Hon. Dino Melaye said: “We will want the minister to tell us how she intends to re-brand Nigeria. I want you to tell us the parameter for re-branding.” He asked further:

“What happened to “Heart of Nigeria” project? Why re-branding? How much was appropriated for the Heart of Africa in 2007, 2008, and 2009 and how much was spent?”

Melaye said that they would be able to see reasons to support current efforts to re-brand Nigeria if they were furnished with details of what happened to the “Heart of Africa project.”

In her respose, Akunyili disclosed: “We intend to source money from the public sector, which is government, private sector and the people of Nigeria. Re-Branding Nigeria is not a jamboree for spending money. We intend to account for all funds.”

She told the joint committee that the “Heart of Africa” project, which was designed to shore up Nigeria ’s image under the previous administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, gulped a whopping N1.05 billion.

She said that the project was a failure, which was why, according to her, it had become imperative to embark on “the Re-brand Nigeria” initiative.
She said that: “In 2007, N750 million was appropriated for the “Heart of Africa” project,” adding that, “In 2008, it was N308 million and N299 million was spent and ‘Heart of Africa ’ is still going on.”“This year, N150 million was appropriated. ‘Heart of Africa ’ still owes N19.5 million, which we hope to pay from the money appropriated in this year’s budget because government is a continuum,” she explained.“’Heart of Africa’ did not work; it is no longer news that it did not work. “Heart of Africa” is a name that was first answered by Malawi .  Many other African countries like Congo, all those countries in Central Africa have been laying claims to being the Heart of Africa.“Heart of Africa was first launched overseas; so it suffers disconnect from the Nigerian people.  I believe that Nigerian people are very intelligent, ingenious people to evolve their own slogan instead of fighting for slogans with small African countries.“For the re-branding to succeed and not go the way of others we have to do things differently.

It is no news that Nigerians all over the world have been painted with the same brush by the international community and that Nigeria is a country where nothing works.“This negative perception about Nigeria was actually foisted on us by the international community and it stuck with us.  We know that this is not true.  We know that we have good Nigerians', she said.

I cannot believe Dora would talk like this. undecided

''Heart of Africa" gulped N1.05 billion during Obasanjo's regime and yet, it was a total failure, therefore she thinks it becomes pertinent - imperative to bring ''re-branding Nigeria'' as an alternative and solution?

If she believes every Government is a continuum, why not work on the mistakes of ''Heart of Africa?'' Must she design her own pet project/initiative?

Again, she has not explicitly stated how the source of funds will be gotten? Who are the Government that will give the money? Are they not the same looters from the nations treasury? What checks would be undertaken to verify the source of funds from these fund-raisers to her ''re-branding project?''

A lot of gaps are missing with this project, which I believe does not add credence to her initiative.

*Most nigerians see nigeria as an enterprise to make money from and not a country to build and serve because there is no feeling of nationhood amongst its people.*

why do Nigerians have issues with what Dora is doing or trying to do?
has she all of a sudden become one of so many Recycled Money-grabbing Old Nigerians?
Shouldn't her legacy as the former NAFDAC boss buy her some trust and breathing space?

Maybe she does not want to be associated with a corrupt project hence, the Re-branding.

Im not trying to defend her but i believe she needs some space to her job. if she fails then she can face the firing sqaud

Ever considered how much all the failures, to date, have cost, and continue to cost, you, Your mother, your father, your relatives, your people, your children and your children's children? If you can, please think/ponder that way for a minute; it might put all this in perspective for you, and help you understand that making sure to do it right is better than just throwing it to chance for the umpteenth time.

In case it flew over you, let me state it out clearly. It is the high pedigree at which Dora set with NAFDAC, that has endeared her to these amount of criticisms with her initiative.

First, she cannot explain in clear terms what this ''re-branding'' serves to the common man on the streets of Nigeria? Does it remove the poverty, insecurity, corruption, lawlessness, low employment rate, amongst others in Nigeria?

Secondly, what is the source of funds to this project? Where will her ministry obtain the money from, seeing that ''re-branding'' was not part of the budget allocation which the her ministry intended to undertake - spend?

Dora made her mark as standing up to illegal drugs in Nigeria. Thereby, stepping on several toes in Nigeria. If she intends seeking her funds from the public towards this project, is it not the part of the same public who have employed corruption, amidst other negative vices in the country to obtain their wealth; that she will now be requesting for funds from?

Lastly, she is a public servant. Her past achievements does not make her secluded from criticisms and issues of discussions bothering on areas where Nigerians see another avenue for corruption and looting of the nations treasury.

Pataki and KJ,

Before Dora took over the affairs of NAFDAC when she was relatively unknown. Who thought she was going to be such a success?
if she was stopped from doing what was right, NAFDAC would have prolly gone down as 'one of those things'
if she's going to be hounded and hindered from doing what she thinks is right for the country then whats the point?
you dont start counting your failure even before you start a project.

I believe Dora must be allowed to go about her business without being pulled back just like any other official.

Oga PAtaki,
Dora stated that the funding will come from public sector, which is government, private sector and the people of Nigeria. What other information do you need? or how else do you want her to explain this?

@ Omo Ibo
You see, this whole mantra of Dora is this, Dora is that is waning out. I have mentioned it before and will continue to say it that she is just asserting her role in the present regime by theRebranding song.
What manner of branding will help a country where constant power supply is a problem, the leaders rulers are seeing the political office as a business investment to make a living and its very clear that the cartels that import power generators are couch-partners with the sitting government?
And, in case you do not know, Dora also has some corrupt practices institutionalized while she was at NAFDAC in spite of the noise she was making outside then. Visit their labs back then; if you do not grease hands nothing will be done on your samples and so forth.
The truth is; Dora is not a saint and what everyone is singing on rebranding is a broken record.
We need the basic necessities of life and not a Nigeria logo whose neon lights will end up being powered by generators.
More stoning for Ya' adua ( rhymes with Yeah, a dull Ass) as he re-brands.

what if this re-branding is just what Nigeria needs to kick start the economy.
what if this re-branding brings good deeds?

I don't how true your allegation on Dora is but i'd pick her ahead of any of the present and past officials. She seems to be doing some sort of work like some of the tossers we've had

I notice you play a lot of chance games with issues than actually providing points that help your case.
How long have you been a Nigerian?
What happened to the WHAT IFS that were asked of the over 20 rebranding projects of our past?
Why didn’t those “what if this re-branding brings good deeds?” questions asked of those rebranding schemes not make sense then?
Why didn’t those “what if this re-branding is just what Nigeria needs to kick start the economy.?” questions asked for each ofthe previous schemes not pan out?
Why do you think asking WHAT IFS yet again will suddenly make sense now?
The woman is clearly not working on having us at least own up for the past mistakes. She continues to blame it all on foreign forces, instead of demanding we take responsibility for our actions in the whole. Is that how you solve problems in your personal lives? Push blame onto foreigners and then come up with ideas that making everyone think positive and print only positive stories will change the country? The investors who recently pulled out of Nigeria got a taste of what the country had to offer and deemed it unacceptable. Why not deal with that reality?

Theft mars Nigerian 're-branding'

The handset was swiped as Isawa Elaigwu entered the conference centre
Thieves stole a mobile phone belonging to a member of a new team campaigning to improve Nigeria's image as a country riddled by crime and chaos.

Isawa Elaigwu told the launch of the "rebrand Nigeria" campaign he noticed the phone was gone minutes before he was due to address the event.

"As I was entering the gates of the conference centre I noticed I had been pick-pocketed," he said.

"This is just the sort of thing we need to fight against".

Nigeria is often seen abroad as a violent and chaotic place, full of people who use e-mail scams to cheat money out of unwitting victims.

'Most dangerous'

Its commercial capital Lagos recently topped a poll of the world's most dangerous places to work.

The Information Ministry hopes to change this bad reputation with a public relations campaign.

Nigeria cannot wait until its solved all its problems before addressing its image

Dora Akunyili
Information Minister
On Tuesday the ministry unveiled a new slogan "Nigeria: Good people, great country", and a logo.

Information Minister Dora Akunyili, who made her name as a fierce campaigner against fake drugs, said the country's reputation was unfair.

"We must shed this toga that says we are untrustworthy, unreliable and ungovernable," she said.

She admitted that the country did have real problems with poverty, corruption and infrastructure, but that wouldn't stop them trying.

"Some people say: 'Why rebrand now?' Nigeria cannot wait until its solved all its problems before addressing its image."

Better life

A better image would improve tourism and encourage businesses to invest in Nigeria, she said.

As Nigerian's own perception of themselves improved they would be less inclined to commit crime, she said.

The previous administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo had a similar campaign to improve Nigeria's image called "Heart of Africa".

Local media reported that the government spent $5.6million (£4million) on it in one year.

It was scrapped by Mrs Akunyili last year.

The minister last week promised the National Assembly the "good people great country" campaign will cost a lot less, and spending will be transparent.

Many Nigerian youths lack the basic knowledge about the REBRANDING that Dora is kickstarting.
To rebrand Nigeria in this respect is to make Nigerians believe in themselves and in Nigeria. This is the FIRST block in building this country Nigeria into a Nation. For the fact that past leaders drain our resources does not mean present leaders should not utilize our resources any more.
Why do we always throw stones on the wrong people? Obj and Frank Iweke jnr and others who ruined the former rebranding efforts are still walking free on our roads. Why attack an innocent Dora?

Many Nigerian youths lack the basic knowledge about the REBRANDING that Dora is kickstarting.
Here are some simple and direct questions for you to answer if you believe you have all the basic knowledge of this rebranding knowledge then. And for claims made, please provide source.
enyojo:

To rebrand Nigeria in this respect is to make Nigerians believe in themselves and in Nigeria.
Is the situation in Nigeria due to the fact that Nigerians( average Nigerians) do not believe in themselves?
enyojo:

This is the FIRST block in building this country Nigeria into a Nation. For the fact that past leaders drain our resources does not mean present leaders should not utilize our resources any more.
This re-branding project is being instituted by the current set of leaders. What makes their strategy so far more trustworthy considering they have yet to do things any different from the way the past leaders have?
enyojo:

Why do we always throw stones on the wrong people?
Criticizing their decisions is same as throwing stones at them? Where do you get this mindset from?
enyojo:

Obj and Frank Iweke jnr and others who ruined the former rebranding efforts are still walking free on our roads. Why attack an innocent Dora?
Obj and Frank Iweke jnr, are not the current leaders, are they? They were cricitized during their time, it is now Dora’s turn to be criticized for leading us down the exact path Obj and his team did, also claiming it will magically turn out good, when we have over 20 years of evidence to show otherwise. Is your beloved Dora above criticism? If yes, why is she is in the public sector?
enyojo:

Every Nigerian needs this rebranding!
Nigerians who cross the boarders and are searched to their private parts need rebranding.
The common man on the street who does not believe himself needs rebranding

Simple question here, Why? What exactly about the common man makes you believe he does not believe in himself and why do you believe that instead of maybe asking he see a counselor or psychiatrist, a re-branding slogan will do the trick?
enyojo:

The jobless graduate who doesnt believe in nigeria but is obsessed with traveling out instead of creating jobs needs rebranding.
Why does the jobless graduate not believe in Nigeria? Because it is his fault that he does not have a job? It is his fault that the country is the way it is? How exactly does rebranding help him get a job?
enyojo:

Great corporations and Nations know that everything RISES AND FALLS ON BRAND!
How many great countries know this? Last I checked, most of the great countries around the world work hard at building up their nation through hardwork and then come out to boast about it, not before. What country today has a good image because of simple brand change?
