Observant:
We have an education that trains you to be depend on the system, sadly the education it self is outdated and time wasting.

After seeing the uselessness of my B.Eng, I knew applying for a Masters degree would be another waste of my time. At the moment I am applying to vocational schools to learn a skill in machinery and equipment overhaul and maintenance .
You are a man.God will bless your efforts.

Hmmm...Passion and money must go hand in hand. Great words. Who revealed that to you? That's the greatest string of words I've read today. ....Your wealth is in your passion. Why didn't the schools teach us this back then? Isn't it time to change the system? We're been limited by those old and almost obsolete methods.

God, help us.

My dear, the school is like a thrilling movie. Full of sound and fury signifying very little. The real world are for real people. The graduate mentality of our youth needs to disappear. Thanks OP for opening our peoples eyes.

Op, our parents share part of the blame. Most parents force their children to go to universities. Many parents would rather have their children teach in one yeye school than learn a trade or skill. I personally had to fight my way to my passion. My parents were reluctant to support me at first. How could their son a graduate become a trader! You see what I am talking about.

Yes boss. The human mind is the most potent and vital faculty of the entire human being. It's the root off our life. It's the conductor of the ochestra called our life. Whatever we see on the outside is a direct reflection of what's on the inside.

If we must change our life, we must first change our mindset. We must do away with all those limiting and negative notions we've been told for decades. We need to uninstal those nonsense and install current and relevant software.

Yes. The real world is a different ball game entirely. Majority of what we were taught within the four walls won't apply here.

It's my desire to keep sharing these truths; maybe, just maybe, some folks will catch the vision and start running with it.

Yes. It's been the case with many families. Parents trying to determine the destiny of their kids. They think they're doing the child a favour but in most cases it's done for their own ego and selfishness.

I'm happy many youths are summoning the courage to choose their destinies themselves.

The real education began for many of us after our undergraduate studies. I came to realise that I'm the master of my own fate. That if I'm to become anything, I shouldn't depend on someone else to make me...

This view however if spread or understood wrongly has the tendency to further create desperation and survival of the fittest mentality in the society, thus leading humans to lose their humanity and sense of social responsibility.

Good afternoon, everyone.

I'm writing tthis due to two reasons. There's a thread on FP where someone's said sometimes he almost regretted going to school. I'll post the link to that thread later. Also, a few days ago, maybe even over a week ago, a friend of mine sent me a text message as early as 6 am, complaining how joblessness has been frustrating him. In the message, he claimed he was about to go into depression and that I should advise him.

My friend and I have come all the way through the same secondary school back in Lagos. He later went to read Marine Engineering from UST, Port Harcourt, the same city where I now work. I called and spoke at length with him. He saw my points. And it's some o these points I'm now sharing here.

A wrong Reason For Going To school!

A vast majority of us believe that the sole aim for going to acquire a degree or some other higher qualifications is to secure a job. That's a terrible mindset! It's the most inappropriate reason for undertaking a challenging process like getting a degree. I used to think that way too. But I was fortunate to have read Rich Dad, Poor Dad and other inspirational books during my ND days. From those books it became clear I was in school to reduce my ignorance and to increase my capacity for usefulness.

When you have a wrong mindset like this, you set up yourself for frustration when the job doesn't come at the right time. It creates tension, envy, depression and may even lead to a suicide. But when you have the right mindset, it prepares you for the challenges ahead, and may force you into doing or learning other skills that may prove invaluable in the future. We didn't go to school for the sole purpose of getting a job. It was a mindset sold us by the society and our parents, but we have to change it. NOW!

The World Doesn't Owe You A Job!

This was the second point I discussed with my friend. My dad told me how jobs were waited for them even before they finished school. That time don pass! A few top politician may achieve that for their fortunate kids, but the vast majority of us knew before hand that that won't be our case. With that belief, we have set up ourselves for unnecessary tension and frustration. The world doesn't owe you a job. The system doesn't owe you a job. You've got to go and fight for your place. You've got to hustle and create a niche for yourself.

Your Degree Isn't A Guarantee For Success!

We need to change our mindset about a lot of things. I never doubted the fact I was going to secure a job after my higher Institution but I also knew my certificate isn't necessarily a guarantee for a job. In fact, I had gone to Lagos hustling with my fishing boat and wood engine boat when I got a letter for my aptitude test. I was still reading and making the necessary contacts as I was paddling my canoe. My hatred for poverty and lack was so great I wasn't even willing to narrow down my success to a paper- a degree/certificate. People saw me as I took my engine and boat to hustle opposite the Nigeria Ports Authority in Lagos, moving passengers from the villages to Apapa township. I didn't bother. I knew it was temporary. But in between when I would secure that dream job, I couldn't ask my parents for money. They've done their best.

I was always prepared for any aptitude test. I had a lot of past oil and gas questions and answers. I never failed to browse relevant sites. I was able to pass the aptitude test, the oral interview and landed the proverbial dream job. I give Him all the glory.

To all those believing Him for a great job, do not pass this moment complaining and whining; they will only lead to chaos and disaster. Look for something SMALL to do. Start small little. Just do something.

There's no free meal anywhere anymore. Don't let that degree prevent you from taking up that cleaning job. Don't let it stop you from taking that security job. It's all a process. Don't let your degree stand in your way. Your degree is supposed to give you a PLATFORM from which you could shoot into any angle and area. Why allow it to become a hindrance to you? Opportunities abound; open your eyes.

Till date I keep learning new skills. There's NO job security anywhere. I'm always conscious of the future. I'm not relenting. I'm not carried away by the little pleasure of the moment. I've got TOMORROW in view.

Change your mindset, and you've changed your life.

The world owes you NOTHING! Forthwith, get busy and believe God for that mega paying job.

Wishing you all a successful career. Thank you!

Lalasticlala, please move this message to the appropriate quarters!

[quote author=abbey621 post=37833360]Back in 2004 as a second year Computer Science student, I came across past graduates of the department still looking for work, even those with first class. I looked at our syllabus and realized most of the content were not applicable in the real world. The highest programming language learnt was C++ and JAVA was introduced as a mini course. I decided there and then that I would develop myself outside of the school. I started following a local computer repair guy, he taught me how to take apart a computer, upgrade it and put it back. He taught me about networking cables, software and so on., I liked it so much that I built my own personal computer from spare parts. I lost complete interest in schooling as the knowledge gained from the real world was far more valuable. I managed to graduate with a 2.2 and as God would have it relocated abroad. It was while abroad that I realized just how valuable the skills I've learnt really were. Suddenly I had access to plenty of recycled parts, I was able to drive on the streets and pick up abandoned laptops, computers, accessories and so on., I started fixing the laptops and selling them on Ebay, the unexpected income was more than enough to sponsor me for a second bachelor's degree and my MBA. The lesson here is that Nigerian education is nothing if you can't apply it in the real world. Just because you pay for education doesn't mean it will be valuable. Sometimes you must look beyond your comfort zone and explore as no knowledge is ever wasted![/quote

Pls bro, go and thank that your mentor he was your god . Simple advice

Education is not for certificate , education is for learning. We need to develop our minds beyond classrooms as it is now, days are gone when we wait for one uncle or auntie or even the government to help. We need to stand out in our own little way. Believe me or Not...There are Jobs out there but few laborers. Thanks

That's the spirit sir. We need to change the course of our mind. We need to see the bigger picture and realise that the real world is a different ball game entirely.

People are afraid of competition so they use their inability to get a job to undermine the importance of education. If education doesn't guarantee success, how many illiterates do you see in NNPC, CBN, JP Morgan, Apple, Exxonmobil, MTN , Etiisalat and other blue chip companies around the world.

If you have a degree, it only gives you an edge over an ignorant when it comes to job opportunities but if such person cannot compete in the midst of available vacancy, then frustration sets in. You can't get a good job anywhere especially abroad without a degree.

The first day you enter school in a country like Nigeria, you should start planning how to get a job.

"...how to get a job.." Thats the greatest undoing of the average graduate and thats whats killing this country and the same thing the OP is talking about. Its good to get a job, dont get @dearpreye wrong, getting a job is good but its a means to an end not an end in itself. #CreateJobs #ThinkOutOfTheJob #ThinkOutOfTheBox #CreateValueAndGetPAid #LifeIsNotFair #ButLifeIsGood #

@op please I'd do you a direct message, you encourage ppl like me to go further
