Am currently serving the nation in Jigawa state, one of the core northern state, in my short stay here, i've come to discover that the north has an unquestionable human advantage compared to the south, however, I stand to be corrected, 60 to 70% of the northern population are un productive, this is quite alarming.
Over 50% are stark illiterate (Mostly women) who cant even make a single sentence in pigeon english, talk less of pure english.
Emphasis on Arabic is high, you can easily find people who understand Arabic than people who understand english.
@Op, the problem of the north isn't some thing we can wish away. It's quite deep, most at times I pity their level of understanding.. In my own opinion, Religion, their political elite are the major problem of the North.
It can be fixed, if only they are willing to. Here a man can send his children to learn Arabic instead of sending them to a normal school. Even those in my school doesn't take school work seriously...

I don't agree with number 1 and number 2. States like Kano get a lot of Federal government allocation. Sokoto is safe and it is struggling. Kano that has the most local governments in Nigeria and it is the 2nd most populated state in Nigeria is struggling. The reason why the North is struggling are.

1. Climate Change- Deforestation, the Northern leaders have failed to plan. They should invest in irrigation projects and dry farming. Instead the y are building airports and stadiums. They are sending people on hajj.

2. Sharia Law- discrimination of women. Girls getting married at an early age. You lose half of your human resources due to Sharia law.

3. Education- the Northern leaders again have failed their people. Girls are not in school. Teachers that don't meet the required standards are not sacked. The WAEC result is terrible.

4. Corruption- Northern leaders like Abacha have failed their people. They loot the country send the money abroad. Money in the billions. The money that was mean't to be used to improve infrastructure. Infrastructure that can create wealth.

5. Lack of infrastructure development. The Northern leaders believe in more socialism programs than making sound investments that will create wealth. Just look at Kano giving grants to women to start a business. The right approach would have been a loan not a grant. Use the money to improve Infrastructure.

Many southern states perform poorly too.Firstly you have to define objective measures of "Performance" before making sweeping generalizations. There is this tendency in the south to look for "evidence" which confirms their prejudice and ignore anything contradictory whether in the area of population,literacy,development or contribution to commonwealth and so those who are motivated to enter this thread are those who are not interested in genuine examination of reality but reinforcemnt of preconceived prejudices.

Kwara state,Kaduna State,Kano state,Kogi State are all northern states with relatively decent IGR figures. Not all states have the same population or other relevant variables and so for any comparison to be "rational" there must be a basis for comparison not just the absolute quantum of revenue.

I disagree. Kano & Kaduna perform very poorly. Except of course Kano is not as populated as we're made to believe during Census.
Kano that is said to have same or more population than Lagos has a lower IGR than Edo State. It just doesn't add up.

We also know that the ethnic and religious mix of Kwara/Kogi differ much from Kano, and a little from Kaduna too.
The North should not hide between Kogi & Kwara.

Nasarawa can emulate Ogun State, harnessing its proximity to Lagos and benefit from proximity to Abuja.

Kaduna should be a very industrialised hub too. Considering how strategic it is.
