The Military promotes discipline, therefore cleanliness is a priority.

Wen there is injury in the hairy area, its easy and quicker to first aid etc the area. Reduces tetanus n bleeding bla bla bla. It all started in the USA.
During the first world war, gas masks became a necessity and in order to attain a full seal against the wearer's skin and avoid leaks, the mask must be flush against the skin, so that meant a soldiers options were either to shave the beard and avoid sucking in poison or keep your awesome beard and look cool while you get blasted in the face with a mouthful of tear gas

Recently on CNN i read a news about a Sikh who was allowed to wear a turban and a beard while he was still serving as a captain in the US army.

Before the WW1 no military mandated its army to have clean shave
During the war as poison gases were used US then provided gas mask to all the soldiers in the front line
But many were still dying because the gases were not properly fitted to their faces so they recommended that everyone must keep clean shave
This reduced the casualty rate from poison gases as the gas mask became air tight on the faces without beards.
To ensure clean shave the US military bought millions of Gillette blades to supply to front-line, this changed the fortune of an almost unsuccessful engineer Gillette who just got a patent to his new shaving blade to become one of the richest man of his time

A US Army spokesman said it was to do with "long-standing traditions of uniformity, hygiene, and good order and discipline", adding that it was in keeping with strict dress codes which required a sense of professionalism and group identity.

Beards are also banned in the US military for practical reasons, explains Penny Jolly, a professor of art and art history, who has studied social trends in appearance.

"They were eliminated in the US military in WWI due to the need to wear gas masks. Razors were issued in GI kits, so men could shave themselves on the battlefield," she says.

The gas mask argument is also often made by police forces - though across the US a patchwork of different rules and regulations exists.

Also in combat, if your opponent has no hair, beard, earrings or piercings then there's nothing you can grab on to as an advantage over him/her.
When girls fight they normally grab each other's hair in an attempt to make their opponent submit quickly. If you don't believe me watch all the girl fights that litter youtube.

those silly catfights and the real world of combat are not quite the same. in reality beards don't pose much of a disadvantage in a mortal battle. In fact, most U.S military special operators (for example) wear their hair long and keep long beards for tactical purposes. Much like many Nigerian schools, while i was growing up at least, used to demand that girls shave their heads, the real reason why the men in uniform shave their beards is simply more to do with traditions of discipline.

it became invoke during world war 1 where the use of chemical weapon was allowed. You having beards would be a problem because the gas mask would not seal well.

Well Some Special Units in the Military do keep their beards and hair as well and are more skillful in Term of tactics
