We shouldn't fight the use of these Nigerian coinages. We should encourage people to use them. Who said we can't evolve our own variant of English, when Australians and Americans and white English-speaking South Africans have their own peculiar English words? 1 Like |

Gwazah: Did you notice that in your screen shot, the example of the use of the word (disvirgin) was taken from a book written by a Nigerian (Gideon Mekwunye)? The word was apparently coined in Nigeria, but seems to be gaining some popularity even outside Nigeria, which is a good thing. |

na wah oh! who teach you use of English no try at all. there are morphemes dat are added at the beginning nd end of a word dey are called prefixes nd suffixes e.g virgin is in the dictionary cos it stands on its own "dis" adds another meaning to d word. Not every word with ed,ing,es etc..dat are In the dictionary because they are tenses. I don't know if you got the explanation buh in a nutshell, d words are correct. 1 Like |

The dictionary is not fixed that new words can't be added or new meanings given to old ones. Besides different meanings can be given to a word by simply adding a prefix or suffix. If Nigerians choose to "disvirgin" their ladies and the Europeans choose to "deflower" theirs, what's the big deal as long as they understand what they are talking about.

There's no Nigerian English as yet.The regional English we speak tagged NIGERIAN ENGLISH is A very poor standard of other regional standards like British English, American English, Canadian English Australian English, New Zealand English, and to some extent, South African English. They are regional standards because, one, they have been codified, two, standardized, and three, there's international intelligibility. That is, the codes or words are internationally understood.E.g.'Toast' means the same same thing in all these regional variations. But,'toast'means another thing in NIGERIAN ENGLISH , which sets the other users of the English language thinking. NIGERIAN ENGLISH is not codified nor standardized. Therefore, it is not a standard yet. |
