Here are 7 words Nigerians use every day which don’t exist. These are the kind of words you type into your phone or computer and it draws a red line underneath it. Please read on and educate yourself.

(1.) GO- SLOW Although the word ‘go-slow’ appears in the dictionary, it is wrongly used by many Nigerians. The word go-slow means a form of industrial action in which work or progress is deliberately delayed or slowed down. It does not mean congested traffic, so it is wrong to use it in that way.

(2.) INSTALMENTALLY There is no such word in the English dictionary, this word exists only in the Nigerian edition dictionary (if such a book exists). The correct thing to say is ‘in installments’

(3.) OPPORTUNED How many times do you say ‘I was not opportuned to come’? The correct variants that exist are ‘opporteune’ or ‘opportunity’. The word ‘opportune’ has no past tense.

(4.) CUNNY “That guy is very cunny”. This is wrong, the word is ‘cunning’, not cunny. If you want to refer to someone who is sly or deceitful, use the word ‘cunning’, ‘cunny’ simply does not exist.

(5.) WAKE-KEEPING I’m sure most people will argue with this, but argue as you may, what you will find in the dictionary is ‘wake- keep’. (

6.) SCREENTOUCH PHONE Oyinbo people made these devices and called it ‘touchscreen’, by the time the phones go enter Naija, we rename them ‘screen touch’

(7.) DISVIRGIN No, you did not dis virgin that babe, you deflowered her, you took away her virginity, but you certainly did not disvirgin her, because the word ‘disvirgin’ simply does not exist!

These are all correct English words invented by Nigerians!. My people, go ahead and use them!.

By the way, what has been the contribution of this writer to our native languages?. In what way has this author contributed to the development of Igbo language?. How has he helped develop Yoruba language?. How about Hausa, Efik, Ibibio, Tiv, Igala, Bini, Nupe, Fulani?. Name them!.

English language originated from illiterates who couldn't speak French and German fluently. That's why it's such an illogical useless language. English language was once spoken as pidgin, exactly as our own pidgin is today!. It only became an official language in 1362 or there about.

Don't be scared to invent new words and use them in Nigeria. Lexicon in English itself allow a given society or even individuals to create their own words, as long as they can define it. That's the nature of languages, especially English.

Check my updated post.

When you look into history and the origin of English language, you begin to cry as to why a whole continent like Africa will be so blind to speak a foreign language created by 800,000 people or less. If English people could adopt pidgin English as their official language in 1362, why can't Africans adopt our own languages in schools as language of instruction?. Why can't we even adopt our own pidgin English for official purposes?. Because, that's exactly what English people did.

English people did not allow the French or Germans to pollute their language!.

Which rat would u kill first? Please be sincere........ You have just come back from work to see 6 rats • The 1st rat was eating your highest academic certificate maybe a degree Certificate. • The 2nd rat was eating your ATM card. • The 3rd rat was eating your Marriage Certificate. • The 4th rat was eating your land and house ownership documents. • The 5th rat was eating your Visa to travel for a multi-Billion dollar project. • The 6th rat was eating your Bible. Which one would you kill first?

Pursue one rat, the rest go tear race.

1) What about the word "welldone"?
2) Pls, is there any radio station program that is more educative in term of "Correct English Grammar" in Lagos like that of the one I used to listen to on ("U and I" Living Spring FM) every Thursday night when I was in Osun state?

This is cool; I had never heard of these Nigerian words, with the exception of "opportuned" - I've seen that on the internet.

Every country has its regional linguistic variations. In the Western world, we all know about the differences between American and Australian English, but we don't often get to hear how English is spoken in non-Western places.

Is there much influence of native Nigerian words on Nigerian English?

Yes. There is in fact. An example would be the phrase "well done" which I assume comes from the Yoruba phrase "eku-ise". It is what Nigerians say to someone who is doing (or has accomplished) a task admirably.
