Okay, so am just about pulling my hair out with this problem.

Got a lappie in July'2009, still has good warranty on it so I guess I'll bring it in if I cant fix it myself. Only trouble is the store is sorta far so, am hoping someone is able to help me.
When I turn it on, i get a message that says:
"The SMART hard disk check has detected an immintent failure. To ensure no data loss, please back up the content immediately and run the hard disk test and system diagnostics". Okay, so I go ahead, windows opens (takes its time to open) but then it gets soooooo slow! Every letter I type takes about 3 minutes each to come up on the screen, and it freezes alot.
I've tried runing scans through Norton, which works till it shuts down and I get a message that says:
"Boot device not found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk, "
I go to run system diagnostics, start-up test as well as run-in test. They all fail. I get message that says "hard disk does not exist"
PLEASE does anyone know how to fix this problem and what in God's name could be wrong? I tried system-restore but it always fails too!

Keep in mind that when I do open this lappie on safe mode, it works perfectly but of course, in safe mode some features dont work (e.g audio, which is a big issue because I love youtube! lol). Please help! (less your heart)

Ok guys if your computer is slow or freezes/lags, there are nasties and junks residing inside.

Download this ccleaner (crap cleaner) to clean junks/craps slowing it down. Click on the green button:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

After installation; click on 'analyze' and and then 'run cleaner'

Then; download malware bytes anti malware to clean your computer of the virus/malware missed by your antivirus

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

After installing and running these 2 freewares, you will experience a significant improvement on the performance of your computer.

sounds like an hp 530 or somesuch - i have seen more than one model give that exact same message - i guess hp laptops ship with faulty SMART technology

foe some reason, your bios is not detecting your hard disk. maybe u dropped or bumped it and the connectors are loose. sounds like a long shot though

Guys PLS HELP,
My CD-ROM icon suddenly disappeared from my computer Folder in my laptop , Since last month i noticed that when am using the drive either to copy/burn or to install a software, it will freeze(it will stop working.), and on futher probing i will discover that the CD-ROM icon is no longer were it is supposed to be, if i restart my laptop the icon will appear back and the drive will start working again.
But since yesterday, the drive icon disappeared and i have checked all including device manager, and it is still not there.
Pls guys I NEED YOUR HELP:
bearing in mind that the drive is still being powered by the laptop (i.e it can still open), and XP is the operating system (from my research this problem is somehow related to Windows 7 and Vista).

You don't necessarily have to do a fresh install. You can do a repair with an XP boot CD ( I assume you are using XP).
When you boot from the CD, press R
wait while it loads. . .you then get the command prompt (black screen)
type chkdsk /r
wait (it may take long)
When the process is complete,
type exit, it should reboot. (don't forget to remove your boot-up cd)
it should work.

Hope this helps.

that's your que right there in bold.

was there a power failure at some point when you were using the notebook before u started seeing the BSOD?

like someone suggested, try to repair the OS (XP, in this case) and if that doesn't work, you might be looking at replacing the HD since it's hard to tell what kind of stop error code the BSOD is showing u when that happens.

note however that, if u have to replace the HD, make the HD that's having the issue the secondary drive and try to extract your data from there. good luck!

You probably did not do the right thing or used the wrong boot disk.
Did it give you the option to repair? R

Here, follow this  step- by-step instructions

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.html

If you format your HD/partitions then all your applications/documents will disappear. Gone with wind.
If its the HD that is giving problem, you might just replace it then.

Hope this helps.

All,

Always buy computers with at least one year usable manufacturer warranty. Most computer problems start gradually, especially board and power issues. So if you are spending over 100k for a laptop, at least make sure you can take it back to the manufacturer because you have been charged almost 25,000 Naira for the possibility of return and services.

At http://www.discountNG.com, any computer and other electronics you purchase comes with full manufacturer warranty that will be processed by the company if need be. Although you will pay for shipping cost to send the gadget back to the manufacturer.

They also provide you with a loaner laptop that you will be using while your laptop is still in transit and in the manufacturer's service center.
