I enjoyed your post, as a practising architect, all what you have listed here are the basic knowledge of any well trained architect. I suspect you are confusing architects with draughtsmen. Also from my experience engineers dont usually want to put in more effort. An example is the placement of columns anyhow, not according to plans drawn by the architect. Instead they are after structural stability, whereas, cantilevers can span more than 6m if well designed and supported. Anyways the point is, an architect is after the aesthetic and functional aspect, whereas an engineer is after the structural aspect. Hence houses designed by a proper architect and an engineer exhibit start differences in terms of aesthetis, functionality and structural integrity. Location Plan |

Funny how someone who claims to be a professional interpret a 3D design of a building. Nothing in construction or engineering is unrealistic or impossible. If concrete can't bend 25 degree steel sure can bend. |

ArcFresky: Columns are not just placed anyhow. If you see more columns, please discuss with the engineer. A good structural engineer will make safe decisions economically. Do not give your project to just a civil engineer, but one who specialised in structures or better a structural engineer. Civil engineering is broad. And cartilever doesn't get it's stability from just support, when there isn't enough space for top reinforcements, it wont stand. Please I love architects and I have worked with great ones with several years of experience. Every profession has quarks. Only hope this post will guide quarks in a right direction, because we can never elimate them. As a practising architect you won't deny you know some people in your class that aren't OK. 1 Like |

Issues like this will always spring up, unless we nigerians stop patronising the non professionals (quakes or draftmen) and engage a professional at all stages especially in building projects. As regards the fee, every professional understands that relationship matters most and therefore fees can be negotiated and at the end everyone shall be satisfied. Arc Mide |
