The Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Olusola Adeyeye, has called for a restructuring of the country’s federalism to allow decentralised police system as a way of tackling the ongoing herdsmen violence.
Mr. Adeyeye, an All Progressives Congress Senator from Osun State, said local and state governments should have police force independent of the federally controlled force “issuing orders from Abuja”.

Highly supported. The police should be decentralized. One of the important steps towards true federalism.

What the hell is true federalism. And why is it advertised as a cure all solution?

Do the states have a sturdy reputation for tackling corruption? Do they have the resources to equip an effective police force?

Mr Adeyeye was the only one that made sense. The country must be restrucutred by empowering the states. There is no reason why each states shouldn't have their own police.

Restructuring is the way to go. All the southern senators should support the position of Senator Adeyeye.

Absolutely no need to mystify these terrorists posing as herdsmen... The security agencies should arrest some of them and treat them like everyday common criminals - publish there names and let the whole world know them.

Nigerian security agencies are nothing but institutionalized terrorist organizations backed up by the state itself, their antecedents is nothing but pure terrorism.

We want state police.
But how will Hausa-Fulani control state police outside their zones?
For that reason, they won't allow it.
It is about power & control. Not whether the country moves forward.

Federalism is what is practised in the united states. You know, dt system of government we are supposed to be using but dont completely adopt because.....reasons.

The states currently dont have the resources so the FG should handle dt tab in the interim, what d decentralization will eventually lead to is a debate on greater resource control by states to handle their responsibilities.

In a civilized nation the heads of security & Intelligence in Enugu would be the first people to resign..They swore to protect the people of that state and other Nigerians living there...Normally there should have been a shake up in thw Intelligence and security circle...Naija i hail thee O!

If you can fund it....and if you can deal with the tribalism in multi-tribal states.

And dealing with this herdsmen problem...is going to require state of the art tech and equipment.Which means billions of naira.Which most states do not have.

For now...the Nigeria Police and the Army would have to sort things out.

With creation of states and local police authorities. The federal, so called "Nigeria police" will be drastically reduced to dealing with inter-states and interjuridictional matters. Most of present police will be deployed to states or local governments of origins. Present police budgets will be allocated to states and local police departmental units for more efficient uses.

A good helicopter would cost at least $250000 (And we won't need just one by the by).

A rifle costs between $500-$1000...depending on the make or type.

We also need uniform costs, a good forensic laboratory, and training facilities.

Add all that together,,,,...and we could be talking high money( And we have not even come to staff salaries).

I don't think state police is a bad idea......but we have to be realistic too.

Do Nigerian government spend trillions on police

State police is one way out of this mess.

Enugu government has the capacity to arm 3000 vigilantes to comb the forests of Enugu

Deceptive murderous Northerners!

When Buhari went to Ibadan many years ago to defend them, then they were Nigerians. Now they are killing people, they are no longer Nigerians.

The news they would kill was everywhere but Buhari did nothing. What does Buhari do after each massacre. He'll keep quiet! Not even condemnation. Because of public outcry, Garba Shehu tweeted condemnation after a whole day, not even the President. The same government that quickly condoled the Belgians but forced to do so in their own country. Talk about damage control. In saner climes, the President will address the nation, condemn the act, offer condolences and possibly resign along with heads of security agencies and be tried for criminal negligence, but not here.

Only a Mumu will believe these people are not Nigerians. The President's body language suggests silent conspiracy. We're watching!

Senator Emmanuel Paulker is From Bayelsa State not Delta State

What we need is decentralized policing system, not state police. Anyone calling for state police should go back and read the history of Nigeria. It will not only compound our problem as a country but it will not solve the current crisis

The so called Federalism the United States practices grows weaker with a very strong central government. Since the American Civil War, the central government has taken up more responsibilities in equipping and creating an armed force with international stretch, social welfare to it's citizens, foreign affairs, the national economy, international trade and even a federal police etc.

These roles enable the central government to overshadow the States in such a manner that true federalism can not be said to exist!

In the United States, prior to the FBI, criminals could easily cross over State borders and jurisdictions, thereby evading justice. The FBI solved that with a national jurisdiction over particular crimes detrimental to national interests.

Now we have you suggesting a problem to our solution. Dividing up and creating multiple law enforcement jurisdictions will cause frictions. Criminals can easily escape justice by merely jumping from one jurisdiction to another.

Besides what efficiency have the states and local governments demonstrated that would lead us to add more responsibilities to their schedule.

The nationality of those heartless savages is still in doubt because Southerners have failed or are yet to respond appropriately as regards these senseless killings. I mean,by the time we go after every Fulani and even Hausa in the South, those who are foolishly telling us that those blood sucking herdsmen are not Nigerians will sing a new song.

When these savages were causing trouble in Oyo state in year 2000 and the People of the affected areas decided to teach them some lessons, Buhari and his tribal entourage rushed down to have a meeting with Lam Adesina, the then Governor of Oyo state.

I don't care if my account on this forum is blocked or not but I must say that the death of those people killed in Enugu must be avenged by Igbo people. It is a big slap!

Let me say this emphatically,Yoruba are town dwellers and our population is quite huge. So if anybody is planning that type of Enugu-like attack in any of our towns and cities in Yoruba land, we will repeat what our fore fathers did to Fulanis in 1840s. This rubbish must be stopped and a strong message sent to those Northern politicians, who I believe are Sponsoring these killings, that the people of Southern Nigeria are more than capable of launching unprecedented mass killings and violence against fulanis.
