Oga, my advice to you at this stage is to put in as much effort as possible and make sure you get a good grade(2:1 or above). You cannot bug yourself down with courses when you are still in uni as these courses are more or less tailor-made for specific industries. So unless you've decided on \ specific area you want to go into i.e. (o&g, petrochem etc) such a move would be nothing but a waste of your money.
As for job prospects, the stock of chemical engineers in naija or indeed abroad is still high so I'd expect you to get a job provided you have a sound knowledge of process eng principles.

debest1 , safetyman1 and every other people that had been leading this thread. I am new but need some help. I am a Chemical Engr graduate from Nigerian Uni
What is your advice for me about Uni Surrey Msc Process and Environmental Systems Engineering choice course. I made my choice by course and findings from the internet. I had Imperial(Advance Chemical Engr with Process Option), and Sheffield as option but the scholarship fee that was available to me ($30000)was below the one that could carry imperial and the course also shifted and Sheffield the closest course they had was safety loss and prevention control engineering which I felt was a little bit away from the the one in surrey and now I just had some folks saying something is wrong with my choice of Uni Surreyand another good friend suggested I should have considered Canada because of job things . I have not been there and dont know how this course is inside the uni and the certificate outside after the Study. Any suggestion and advice will be most appreciate.

Apologies for replying a bit late, University of Surrey is a good school and is also well recognised, but I must confess to you that if I was in your shoes, I will go for the Process Safety & Loss Prevention. This is because that programme delivered in Sheffield is more recognised (in the UK & abroad). You can do no wrong, if you graduate with an MSc in Process Safety & Loss Prevention. Companies all over the world are finding it difficult to recruit Process Safety Engineers. I was in a discussion with a Chevron Process Safety Engineer recently and she was complaining about how it has been very difficult to recruit safety engineers for the Chevron LNG project in Barrow Islands (Australia). It’s the same story all over, even in the UK. A friend of mine with a degree in Safety & Loss Prevention just got a job with Saudi Aramco as a loss prevention engineer and this guy has less than 4 years work experience. Like my Project Manager will always say “with experience in Safety & Loss Prevention you will always have a job”. I hope this helps

d idea generally is to have sumthing dat keeps you ahead of the competition.
1st step is get a good grade- 2.1 and above-dats usually d 1st screening
second is to b an active member of relevant organisations i.e in nigeria- NSE,NSChe, NGA,SPE etc, networking is of essence.
thirdly, decide on where you want to work- this will keep you focused, you shouldnt be swayed by every job opportunity.i.e. do you want to be a design engineer, a H.S.E Engr, field, or in a bank grin- this will ofcourse determine the professional certificates/trainings to attend.
your 1st job shouldnt be about money, d idea is to build on experience- take it as long as its in the field that pique's your interest
finally Prayer helps.

to your question, a very big yes! Some Multinational companies would rather remain anonymous and creat special e-mail account for recruitment to avoid flooding of their company webmail with applications years after the recruitment is over.

I got this info from a very reliable source. A word is enough.

I am a HND holder in process technology with professional qualifications in BOSIET,SWIMMING, FIRST AID and an OPITO certified process operator. Is there any oil and gas coy i apply to outside nigeria or in nigeria with the above qualifications. Honest responses will be appreciated
Re: Chemical & Process Engineers Forum by debosky(m): 10:32pm On Jul 23, 2011
^^

BOSIET, SWIMMING and FIRST AID are not professional qualifications - they are safety/emergency requirements for working in certain O&G facilities.

Your process operator qualification may be useful, and you can seek to apply to O&G companies in Nigeria (depending on what the qualifications involves)

I just stumbled on this thread; hoping some of the gurus here can help with this problem.
I am working on a pre-feed study for a gas plant. The gas is high in H2S (1500ppm) but reasonably low CO2 (3.5%). The client is looking for a budget/safe/reliable package to handle 30MMSCFD of gas. I need help with the best method to remove the acid gas and how to achieve the dewpoint.
Thanks in advance
Re: Chemical & Process Engineers Forum by debosky(m): 1:02pm On Aug 01, 2011
Without more detail and with such a small throughput I'd suggest going for an amine based scrubbing system. Essentially that involves a column/tower with lean-amine flowing downwards and the gas flowing upwards. There are different amine compounds that can achieve the duty - MEA (monoethanolamine), DEA (diethanolamine) and the likes, with some proprietary brands coming with additional functionality. The advantage of this method is that you can regenerate the amine and re use it, with the drawback being additional equipment and cost (regeneration tower, heat input for regeneration, etc)

Alternatively, you could use an activated carbon bed to remove the H2S - i.e flowing the H2S rich gas through a packed bed of activated carbon. Once saturated you'll need to dispose of the used adsorbent, so there will be an ongoing cost associated with that.

Alternatively, there are specialist adsorbent manufacturers out there - one I'm familiar with is the puraspec range, marketed by Johnson Matthey. The drawback with the adsorbent case is that they usually work primarily on H2S removal and not CO2, and the cost of the adsorbent may vary.

For water dewpoint you'd use some dehydration process, either using TEG or maybe adsorbents, depending on the quantity of water you need.

For hydrocarbon dew point, again this is dependent on the spec of your export gas, as well as the fraction of heavy components in your feed.

You can use J-T expansion or turboexpanders, depending on your inlet pressure.

Any more advice beyond this generic stage will require consultancy fees. . . .in fact I might require a small fee for this info sef. grin

A few points here;
1) what is the plan with the gas? is it to be transported via pipeline to a secondary facility or connection to the grid? Which country is the facility in?
2) If the plan is to connect to the grid, the CO2 content is below 4% which is generally the max. so you might only have to worry about the H2S.
3) What are the flowing conditions; i.e. pressure? What is the export pressure you are designing to?

Now my own consultancy fee is $'0000/minute grin
Re: Chemical & Process Engineers Forum by lolade4(f): 1:42pm On Aug 01, 2011
@kenny, this is a UK facility and the plan is to connect to the national grid.
The fwhp is about 90bar.
I cannot afford your rate but would appeal that you help a damsel in need.
