I always advice upcoming chemical engineers (though i'm new in the profession) that Nigeria has two great needs, Food and Energy. Each time i'm in a forum of chemical engineers I discover that the Nigerian Chemical Engineers love discussing the foreign aspect of chemical engineering - all those nice names - and hoping for employment one day. A hope that has put most people through Masters and Ph.D while still wondering what they want for their lives. Chemical Engineering for it to have utility value should be studied with the mind of researching into our available local raw materials, setting up a plant for its conversion, business starts and the profession is brought home. Engineering should have a localized applicability for it to be relevant. Rather than having nice foreign outlook curriculum.

And then some folks will do a diploma for employability, degree to increase employability and will still want to go for Masters for employability - what a waste of life. After First Degree and being in the real world for sometimes, a graduate should know what he wants for his/her life. If the First Degree was embarked on for the proposed employer why not do Masters for yourself - to fulfill a passion from what you have started or from what you are doing or from what you intend to do. My engineering colleagues let's do engineering as a utility discipline, not as a speculative discipline. And you will hear our foreign trained guys advicing locally trained engineers on the prospects in the profession - what a misnomer. Who should understand better? Words are cheap. But the real worth bothers on applicability. That is why Legal profession for it to be useful all their graduates from any part of the world must come back to the country to enroll in law school in order to domestic the doctrines in the profession, as it is applicable at home.
Re: Chemical & Process Engineers Forum by Oduok(m): 3:57am On Aug 14, 2015
As a rule: be sceptical about any course that tells you we can do everything and anything because they will end up doing nothing. Be warious about a man that tells you he can do everything. Chemical Engineering, to be sincere, can turn out to be a pure engineering science venture if not guided. Ask a final year chemical engineer, what can you do? Then you'll be surprised at the response or lack of response. Before an undergraduate leaves the University as a graduate chemical engineer he should have convinced himself on what he can do as a chemical engineer. Someone that had admission to study law knows he's a lawyer, same with medicine, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering. But someone that has Masters in chemical engineering will still be wondering and asking questions like what is the career prospect like for chemical engineers. And he will be rightly answered - chemical engineers do everything and work everywhere. Is that not ridiculous?
