The current transport minister and former Governor of Rivers state Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said that immediate former president Goodluck Jonathan has always had deaf ears to the plight of the Ogoni people and the Niger Delta region in general, the Daily Post has reported.

Amaechi, who made his comments while giving an address to mark the implementation of the UNEC report on Ogoniland, lamented that he did everything within his power while he was governor to make Jonathan implement the UNEC report on Ogoniland.

“We did everything possible as a sitting government to make the president implement the UNEC report, everything. But the report was not implemented after all,” the transport minister said.

I hate to say this!
This government is always putting the cart before horse!
Is this the best time to start clean up when the militants are busy bursting pipelines?

Why not fix the militants issue first?

Unless this cleanup is just a window dressing or a political move, I see no reason why they should start this at this junction in time.
It does not make sense!

Finally, someone with sense pops out.

Osibande has turned to abobaku.....Yeah, folks might say this exercise might is publicity scam atypical of all things APC...but you wont begrudge NDA the respect of scaring away a sitting president albeit one with a supposedly tough reputation from visiting a part of his territory?...If President is not safe here, is it the Army,Police or DSS that is safe? Let us forget about our pipelines for one minute..This scenario has unarguably cemented the reputation of NDA and IPOB.

Think differently...this may have been to avoid unnecessary massacre of innocent civilians. I can assure you that the C-in-C can decide where he goes but the aftermath, I cannot say. What's the point of attending a cleanup if you leave blood stains at the end?

you have spoken with keen wisdom but trust foolish Nigerians who unfortunately are the majority to come here and tell otherwise

But he's wrong even if well said. The cleanup was scheduled since Day 1 of this presidency. Plus it's at the genesis of the original movement in the Niger Delta. Ken Saro Wiwa wanted an environmental and true economic respite for his people not some cheap Amnesty payments that would keep them impoverished in the long run. These NDA are simply violent fallouts of a welfare state.

What's more important is for the land to be cleaned up. It's a big shame everyone has politicized the whole thing despite the best of intentions from this administration regarding the clean up.

Everyone should take a step back and be objective for once.

There is a good reason for politicizing the issue.

The Ogoni cleanup is estimated to take 30 years and cost $1b.

Before you embark on such a project, a timeline should be engineered and a trust fund established.

Being a thorough administrator, GEJ never took hurried steps.

PMB is the opposite of GEJ. He has earmarked $10m (only about 1% of the entire funds) for the start up. There is currently no trust fund or timeline of how the funds would be released. Or even how we would apportion funds to it (as you well know the economy is bleeding and we could be entering a recession).

What we just have is an hurried attempt to win the goodwill of the ND people, and probably dumping this in 2 years when the euphoria has died down.

If there is no plan to see it through, then wait till you get such a plan before you commence activities. If we can construct roads that should take at most two years over a decade, what is to say that this cleanup would not take 60 years instead of the earmarked 30 years.

It is a laudable act to commence cleanup, but it is cruel to use it as a political move, which is evident by the abrupt lack of planning and vision.

It is exactly like the enforcement of the TSA. When TSA was envisioned by GEJ's economic team, on paper the advantages sounded great, but the consequences were just as dire. In the end, phased adoption was agreed upon. Implementation was delayed in the end of GEJ's tenure when oil price fell and the economy weakened.

Buhari in his bid to score a cheap political point, bluntly enforced the TSA at a time when oil price was at its lowest, our growth rate had reduced by over 60%, and the economy was quite frankly at the brink of contracting.

Today, they talk about how they have accumulated N3t in the TSA, but they do not mention the resultant 50k jobs lost in the finance sector as a result of the hurried shock caused by the removal.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
