Nigeria's largest steel plant will finally start production, four decades after it was built.

The Ajaokuta mill has cost the country more than $8bn, but has never produced any steel.

It is hoped that getting the facility off the ground will save Nigeria billions of dollars in steel imports.


Built on a 24,000 hectares (59,000 acres) site in 1979 with the coke oven and byproducts plant larger than all the refineries in Nigeria combined is reported to finally start production, four decades after.

Industrial arc furnaces range in size from small units of approximately one ton capacity (used in foundries for producing cast iron products) up to about 400 ton units used for secondary steelmaking.

Total theoratical energy required to melt the scrap and to superheat it to the typical tap temperatures requires around 350 – 370 kWh/t-steel. [/b]This energy can be provided by the electric arc, from fossil fuel injection or oxidation of the scrap feedstock. In practice, the energy use is highly dependent on product mix, local material and energy costs and is unique to the specific furnace operation. Factors such as raw material composition, power input rates and operating practices – such as post-combustion, scrap preheating – can greatly influence the balance. [b]Actual electricity use in EAFs are reported to range between 300 – 550 kWh/t, and in 1999 reached an average level of 425 kWh/t.
