I remember when I visited zimbabwe. Zisco steel blast furnace 5 and 6 uses 380 megawatts and those are only two furnaces the furnaces also use a lot of coal. I mean a lot about 32 wagon trains of coal.

A order nigerian illiterate.South africa has the biggest coal reserve followed by zimbabwe in africa. are coal in nigeria is a ants compared to those countries. They have a coal mine more than 1 kilometre deep. Stop stay in your village and travel to other african countries .

Africa’s Coal Producing Countries To Exploit Increasing Global Demand

Better times are here for South Africa, Zimbabwe and Nigeria as global demand for coal in the next five years is estimated to surpass nine billion tonnes. This is according to the the International Energy Agency (IEA) in its just released annual Medium-Term Coal Market Report.

Although South Africa and Zimbabwe are the only two African countries recognised by the IEA as having proven coal reserves, Nigeria is also believed to have abundant coal reserves left unexploited as the coal industry suffered a big blow following oil discovery in the 1950s. However, with falling global oil prices putting Nigeria on the edge and in a haste to diversify its economy, the increased global demand for coal is good news for Nigeria.

Africa’s Frontrunners

South Africa remains one of the top ten coal producers in the world and the first in Africa, responsible for about three percent of the world coal usage. The country also has the world’s ninth largest proven reserves of coal at 30.2 billion tons. It is the seventh largest exporter of the natural resource, selling 260 million tonnes abroad. Between 2003 and 2010, the continent’s second largest economy exported 6.3 percent of total exports globally, making it the fifth most important coal exporter in the world. The natural resource is South Africa’s third largest source of foreign exchange.

Coal has contributed immensely to South Africa’s economy, but same cannot be said about Zimbabwe, whose economy is at one its lowest points ever at the moment. The country battle with widespread poverty and unemployment rate of about 80 percent. The country has one of the top 30 proven coal reserves in the world at 502 million tons, but keeps dropping. Zimbabwe’s coal production is one of the lowest of the countries with proven coal reserves. The country produced 1.66 million tonnes in 2009. Makomo Resources (Pvt) Ltd., Zimbabwe’s largest coal producer by output is however working hard to ensure it increases production, with one of the plans to ensure this being the construction of a 600-megawatt power plant that will cost it $1.5 billion. The company plans to raise monthly coal production capacity to 350,000 tons by the end of the year from about 250,000 tons now.

Grabing a fading opportunity

With the world coal demand growing and South Africa being the source of 92 percent of coal consumed in Africa, Nigeria has a market it can break into if it gets things right in its coal industry.

Business Day reports that Nigeria has proven coal reserves of about 639 million metric tonnes and contingent reserves of up to 2.75 billion metric tonnes. Since the 1909 discovery of coal in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria, the fuel has been discovered in 13 other states where there are now about 22 coal fields. These deposits, if fully utilised will help Nigeria in its economic diversification plans, as it will provide another source of foreign exchange through exports.

Although, whatever success recorded in this regard may be short-term, as global coal demand is slowing down. However, a healthy coal industry will not only serve for exports, it will also ensure sufficiency for local demand, especially now that some indigenous firms are rumoured to be considering importing coal from South Africa for power generation, as Nigeria continues struggling to improve its power sector.

The fate of the global coal market may be dependent on China, the world’s biggest coal user, producer and importer, which has embarked on a campaign to diversify its energy supply. But China’s plans are not expected to drop its coal consumption in the next five years.Besides, Nigeria can start its coal industry revival by producing just enough to compete with South Africa for the African market held strongly by the continent’s second largest economy.

Apart from helping Nigeria diversify its revenue stream, with oil, its major revenue source now selling bellow $60 per barrel, the resuscitation of the coal industry in Nigeria will also provide more jobs. It will also help it in the ongoing power sector transformation drive.

Update On Trading And Conversion To Coal
Posted by Admin In Uncategorized

Lagos, 31st August 2016: Dangote Cement PLC (DANGCEM-NL), Africa’s largest cement producer, announces an update on trading and its conversion to coal.

Sales growth remains robust in Nigeria with volumes up 15% in July and August.

Disruption to the gas supply, our preferred fuel in Nigeria, has deteriorated in the present quarter. Alternative fuels such as LPFO, and to a much lesser extent coal, are up to three times higher in costs and the need to use them instead of gas has led to a substantial cost increase. In addition, the Naira has experienced a significant devaluation against the US dollar over the past few weeks. Both of these external factors have combined to increase our costs substantially in our largest market.

To mitigate the impact of these cost increases we have taken the following actions:

We have previously indicated that we would increase the price of cement to offset the increase in costs caused by devaluation and other cost factors. The present situation has regrettably forced us to increase the ex-factory price of cement by 600 Naira per bag, bringing the price back to levels only marginally above what they were before we announced a price decrease in September last year.
We have accelerated installation of our coal mills and coal mining initiative in Nigeria and now expect to begin mining our own coal in November. Most of our production lines are now capable of running entirely on coal and this drive towards self-sufficiency will almost eliminate our dependence on gas supplies, imported coal and, more significantly, LPFO.

Own-mined coal will be cheaper than gas, which is priced in US$ but paid in Naira. Furthermore, being transacted entirely in Naira, it will reduce our need for foreign currency at this difficult time for the Nigerian economy.

Onne van der Weijde, Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Cement said:

“These are challenging times for Nigeria and for Dangote Cement but we are taking strong actions that will position the company for continuing success.

Our coal mining initiative will benefit both the company and the Nigerian economy by reducing the need for foreign exchange and helping us to both protect existing jobs and create new ones.

Although we have indicated a more measured approach to our expansion across Africa, we have new operations opening soon in Congo and Sierra Leone and these will strengthen the company’s profitability and generate additional foreign currency earnings.

Despite the challenges we are facing, we continue to focus on becoming a global force in cement production.”

About Dangote Cement

Dangote Cement is Africa’s leading cement producer with nearly 44Mta capacity across three plants in Nigeria and recently opened factories in Cameroon, Ethiopia, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.

We are a fully integrated quarry-to-customer producer with production capacity of 29.25Mta in Nigeria. Our Obajana plant in Kogi state, Nigeria, is the largest in Africa with 13.25Mta of capacity across four lines. The Ibese plant in Ogun State has four cement lines with a combined installed capacity of 12Mta. The Gboko plant in Benue state has 4Mta. We plan to build new factories in Ogun State (3-6Mta) and Edo State (6.0Mta). Through our recent investments, Dangote Cement has eliminated Nigeria’s dependence on imported cement and is transforming the nation into an exporter serving neighbouring countries.

In addition, we are investing several billion dollars to build manufacturing plants and import/grinding terminals across Africa. We have operations in Senegal (1.5Mta), South Africa (3.3Mta), Cameroon (1.5Mta), Ghana (1Mta import facility), Ethiopia (2.5Mta), Zambia (1.5Mta) and Tanzania (3.0Mta). We will open a new 1.5Mta integrated factory in Republic of Congo and an import facility in Sierra Leone later in 2016. We are planning new capacity in Nigeria, Kenya, Nepal, Zambia, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire and Liberia.

Despite huge deposits, Nigeria imports coal, iron ore – FG

Nigeria currently imports significant amounts of coal and iron ore despite huge deposits of the mineral resources in the country, the Federal Government has said.

The Federal Government said this in a document entitled: ‘Road map for the Growth and Development of the Nigerian Mining Industry’, with the forward written by the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

According to the report, the country was also importing barites until 2003 when the Federal Government banned its importation, adding that the country had since become a net exporter of barites.

The report stated, “Today, mineral production data in Nigerian mining is unclear and inadequate. A reasonable conclusion can be drawn that the industry is constrained. However, given the historical under-reporting of production by existing firms, together with the fact that most of Nigeria’s mineral production is conducted by artisanal miners, it is believed that the production figures are understated.

“Mineral revenues are often in one of the two markets: local consumption and exports. Local consumption accounts for majority of the market, as minerals contributed only about 0.02 per cent of the reported exports in 2012.

“In a number of cases, the excess of demand over local production makes Nigeria a net importer of minerals. This is despite the presence of huge potential for some of these minerals, highlighting the market opportunity that exists from import substitution.

“For example, Nigeria imports significant amounts of coal and iron ore despite the potential endowment it has. Nigeria used to import barites until 2003 when the government banned imports to boost production.”

The report added that the sector contributed approximately 0.33 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product of the country in 2015 and that the contribution was a reversal from the historically higher percentages contributed by the solid minerals sector.

One of the most critical factors for creating an enabling environment for exploration and mining is investor perception, the report noted.

It stated, “Undue interference by communities and state governments, with expectations outside the provisions of the law/regulations, cripples investments and the development of the mining sector.

“Uncertainty and inconsistency in state and federal laws, interpretation and enforcement will hamper development. The perception of a change of regime affecting laws also stalls investment and partnership.

“Fiscal policies that remain stable and predictable in the face of changing regimes improve transparency and foster good governance within the sector.”

The report also highlighted three phases for putting the minerals sector on the path of growth. The phases are the short, medium and long terms.
