Not a bad idea.

If we pay jst 1 % tax on 100,000,000,000 Naira 100billion naira spent per annum on calls.

That is 1,000,000,000,000

1 Billion Naira Revenue.

Osheeey Babaa...No be err'ry body qet money try kipp kwayet plis

And we will not even feel it as callers.

You and this CBN Governor are dullards sef, plus una president.

So 1,000,000,000,000 is a Billion Naira, abi?

Typical.

U will never contribute any tin meaningful apart from Insult and criticize.

The gist remain if revenue from making call is 100billion as claimed, 1% tax is 1 Billion is not a big deal.

Seun:
How can the chief economist of a country think that raising taxes on long phone calls, which will depress spending, telco revenue, and ultimately telco jobs, will help an economy in recession?

That's why he should focus on his job which is monetary policy and leave fiscal policy for the finance minister. Govt is looking for where to get money to spend on themselves and not on the citizens.

Why Don't We Save Ourselves The Troubles And Simply Sell Off This Country Since Generating Revenue Is Such A Difficult Thing Unless Nigerians Are Strangled? Isn't It Possible To Be Taxed For The Air We Breathe?

Could you explain a bit further please...

Thanks for the patience.

You know they claimed Nigerians spent 100billion naira on making calls in a year.

If those who make that call pay 101 naira instead of 100 naira. That is 1 Billion Naira Revenue for the govt.

Very tiring how so-called intelligent people keep proposing ways to wiggle out every drop from the Nigerian citizen but won't support a bill to curtail Government waste. So if they do tax long calls, what would they use the funds for....... Buy more cars for 'lawmakers'?

This is simply a government running its lower class citizens to the ground, our poor and misguided country using us to make money so they will be able to make something out of their proposed propaganda..... 5k monthly I can see it well well.

It's been proven that your skull is empty.

What has the government done for its citizenry before thinking 1% call tax? Have they resolved the lingering increase in virtually everything in the market before imagining this policy? That it worked in the UK and other well to do countries does not mean we can do it here in Nigeria.

You are probably a Zombie!

Cos what we are saying is for every 100naira call u make, pay 1 naira as tax at that rate.

Its not exactly as you have analysed. It will immediately have a very negative effect when implemented.

This doesn't even make sense. What Nigeria has is a balance of payments problem, levying extra tax on the little we produce is like printing money, it just fuels more inflation. I realised a while ago that Nigeria is a nation of føøls, both our common people and the arrogant leadership are cut out of the same cloth.

This id!ot called Emefiele is supposedly a first class graduate of engineering with approximately 30 years banking experience, yet he lacks critical thinking skills and he is obviously not accustomed to using his brain. . .

This same political class proposes a 'direct cash transfer' to the poor. Money that could be used to boost agricultural production will be used to pay citizens for doing absolutely nothing.

The man's policies must either favour the powers that be or the masses. He knows those who can easily call for his sack and in case he also dreams of governorship in his state after his CBN governorship(remember Soludo), he knows which side to axe.

It'd be deluding to expect him to proffer any idea that'd touch those sacred cows, heck he's even giving their children jobs without advertising same for his brethren.

Keep up the abuse. It makes u feel like u have something upstairs. It is a symptom.

So paying 1 naira on every 100 naira call u make is a very big deal for u and reason for all this nonsense u are writing.

No patriotism but u expect miracle.

And what will the effect be ?

People will cut down cost drastically, this will affect the Telco workers, they will loose workers, the retailers will reduce workers, the cashflow will reduce in the industry, contractors to service providers will also be affected. They make money when there is high demand and constant optimisation of the system.

I worked with one telco before. If it is effected, it is not going to provide much help. Government may make money for a while, but the economy will be twice broke.

He has made a very useful point.

Our response should not be about if it's welcome (because it is) but how do we ensure judicious use, proper spending of our money? How do we ensure accountability and transparency in government? How do we monitor government spending and ensure that they are indeed well placed, cost effective and socially impacting?
