We'll never really find out why. Remember he said he was not paying attention during the dinner because of what he saw at Kaylee's place so he just kept agreeing with what his parents told him to do...

His dad lied that she came to him to help her break up so she can date someone else so he went to her house again and saw her coming out of a car with a guy he had never seen before and they "hugged", before going into her house together, so he assumed it was the new guy.
