CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Dr Livingstone sat back in his executive sofa, his 21’’ LED TV tuned to Channels television. “Otunba Jayeola, welcome sir.” He greeted them with a ‘close-up’ white smile and a handshake.

“Hello Doctor,” Otunba grinned from ear to ear as he shook Dr Livingstone’s hands vigorously. Clearly, he looked like a real Otunba these days.

“Madam, You are welcome,” Doctor greeted Liz with an even brighter smile. Suddenly, Otunba’s mood changed and he wore a sunken look. Carlton Specialist hospital is a branch of Ella’s A-list family hospital in Lagos and they were registered here as a family. Bringing Liz to the Dr’s office was a mistake, he thought. Thankfully, Dr Livingstone didn’t show any interest in being introduced to Liz- she was that plain and simple looking.

They all sat down. Otunba and Liz occupied the two vacant fancy iron chairs in front of the Dr’s huge desk and waited for the good doctor to speak.

“Ahem...hmm,” Doctor Livingstone cleared his throat and sat straight. “First, I want to assure you that your daughter is in very good health now.”

“Thank God!” Liz rubbed both palms in praise. “But what exactly brought her here?”
The doctor-somewhere in his early forties- smiled casually and faced Otunba, “I don’t usually discuss my adult patients -who are well enough to talk- in their absence, unless it’s necessary. I hope you understand ma.” He turned to Liz in a mock bow, “I suggest you talk to Darasimi.”

“But she’s my...” She started to say

“...When are you likely to discharge her, doc?” Otunba cut her short. “Her mother is out of town and if she’s strong enough, I’ll like her to be back home when she returns tomorrow.”

“I’m positive she’ll be fine enough to go home with you today, from all indications.” DrLivingstone assured him. “I’ll meet you upstairs as soon as the results of her tests come in.” Dr Livingstone’s intercom buzzed and he said; “Send her in.” With a look that says ‘im through with you, he said, “That’s my next patient.”

Working to mask her disappointment, Liz stood up and thanked the doctor for his time and headed for the door, but Otunba sat back and watched her leave. As soon as he heard the click of the door, he stood up and said, “What’s wrong with my daughter?”

“She’s pregnant and she tried to abort it with an ocd. The scan shows baby is still intact and fine, let’s just see results of blood test.”

Before he could open his mouth to say a word, the doorknob turned again and a heavily pregnant woman squeezed her way in. Left with no choice, Otunba stood up and headed for the door.

Otunba drove Ella and Darasimi home in silence. Within thirty minutes, the three of them sat around the dining table. Darasimi looked guilty and nervous, Ella curious and Otunba, disappointed.

“So, where is Paul?”Ella broke the awkward silence that lingered even after the ride, while Otunba just looked on in disappointment.

She opened her mouth to answer, but only tears streamed down her beautiful face. She brought her head to her hands in shame, breathing deeply through her mouth, nostrils blocked from too much crying.“Here,” She managed to say. She wiped her face with the back of her hand and handed her a rumpled piece of paper. “His numbers.”

Punching numbers so fast, her fingers shook so badly she hit the wrong button and had to try again and again. “Hello...hello...”She hissed and hung up after getting a ‘not available’ for the third number, her turn to shake her head in disappointment. “The numbers are not available.” She stood up and paced the room, murmuring and gnashing her teeth.

“What’s the next thing now?” Otunba asked no one in particular.

“I’m keeping the baby.” Darasimi answered.

“No way!” Ella screamed in shock.

Otunba stood up quietly and held his daughter’s shoulders, head bowed in sorrow and disappointment. “I think that’s a wise decision, as far as you have learnt your lessons. Paul or no Paul, no grandchild of mine will be aborted. Thankfully, the drug you took did not damage the baby and I hope it won’t affect your grades in school.”

Darasimi’s face brightened immediately, “Thank you sir!” She knelt down and held her dad’s legs, “I promise it won’t disturb my studies and I assure you I have learnt my lesson.”

Unable to blow off her own concerns, Ella held up her hands in frustration. “I don’t know about you Jay, but I’m not ready to be a grand mum now.”

Otunba went around the Oak wood dining table and put his arms around Ella, aware of her anxiety. “I’m ready to be a grand dad, believe me; you’ll love the baby if you make yourself available. Take it as your second chance to nurse and nurture ‘your blood’ from infancy. Besides, you have a mother who is still very active and strong.”He almost ended the adjective describing Ella’s mum with ‘useless’, because she seemed worse than her daughter.

Ella swallowed hard and said with a sneer, “It will be nice to be a grandmother after all.”

Chapter Eighteen

For long moments after she got home from the hospital, Liz gazed at the wall, reminded of the past, so clearly it took her breath. She ran her hands through her big braids, remembering her first meeting with Otunba over two decades ago and how different he had been from the other men, the ones who had had so much fun at her expense.

She could hardly believe that the tough, emotionless man who walked her out of Darasimi’s hospital room was the same man who had been a good husband to her for years, defended her when his family and friends sneered at her. Even his face had changed, she thought. It too, had become harder and lacked emotion. She shivered suddenly and rubbed her face. The past didn’t matter now. How Johnson Jayeola had or hadn’t changed didn’t matter. What mattered was that she still cared about him and his children.

Checking her watch, she called out to her mother who was busy cooking in the adjoining kitchen. “Maami,” She called out gently, concealing the emotions that threatened to erupt within her.

“I’m coming o,” Mama answered and wiped her wet hands on a kitchen towel. “I’m almost through.”

Liz struggled to compose herself before her mother entered the living room, she didn’t want her to know she has been crying.

Mama finally came out of the kitchen covered in sweat. She sat across from her daughter on a padded couch, faded by the sun. “How is my granddaughter and what is wrong with her exactly?” Anxiety showed on her face and voice.

Liz shifted in her chair uncomfortably. She hesitated, afraid that telling her mother how she was treated at the hospital might affect her health, yet lying didn’t come to her easily. “She was sleeping when I got there and the doctor didn’t allow us to see her.”

Mama’s eyes suddenly flooded with tears, every wrinkle became more prominent as she sobbed into her faded Ankara wrapper. She continued for a few minutes, then wiped her eyes and cleared her throat. “Elizabeth, you are lying to me.” She said quietly with an air of resignation.

Liz closed her eyes a moment and sucked in a deep, calming breath. It wouldn’t do to get into an argument with her mother. She cleared her throat and said finally, “Johnson didn’t allow the doctor tell me the nature of her sickness, and Darasimi did not talk to me. I’m just worried because of that dream I told you about earlier.”

“hmm,..hmm” Mama sighed heavily.

Liz drew to mama and held her by the shoulder, “That’s why I didn’t want to tell you o, I can’t lose a child to another woman and lose my mother too.”

Mama rested her chin on her palms and gnashed her teeth. Then her faced suddenly lit up. “What of your trip with Deji? Can you still make it?” Mama asked suddenly as if she just remembered.

“I’m no longer interested, maami. I need to know how Darasimi is faring.”

“It might help you feel better, Liz.” Mama said.

“Well, the flight is tomorrow and we planned to leave for Lagos today. But I just don’t think it’s the right thing to do now, just that I don’t want to waste the money he has spent on the trip.”

“Where is he now?” Mama asked. The time was already 2pm and the Lagos-Ibadan expressway is no road to ply at night if you are not very experienced. “Ile ti n su oko mi.” Mama pointed out the time to her.

“He called me on my way here to tell me he was on his way to see his sick father at Elebu. He’ll soon be here.”

“Omo daa daa ni. May the father receive divine healing o.”

“Amen.” Liz said and closed her eyelids to keep the tears from flowing again.
Gently, mama touched her shoulder. “It’s alright,” She said softly. “God will lead you aright by His grace.”

Re: Almost Paradise by Nobody: 6:37am On Mar 28, 2017
***************************************************************************

The house she described over the phone was easy to locate because it stood out from the rest of the houses on the quiet estate off the new Akala expressway. The black gate stood tall and shiny from afar, while elegantly woven iron rods stood on the unpainted dwarf fence that’s decorated with stone tiles. As he approached the house in his newly acquired Toyota corolla, he slowed down, and brought the car to a stop.

He got out of the car and made the remaining fifty meters on foot.
He pressed the bell and a shabbily dressed young lady opened the pedestrian gate a couple of inches. “Welcome oga.” She curtseyed.

“I’m here to see Mrs Ella Williams.”

“Your name sir?” She asked without making any attempt to open the gate any further.

“Deji, Dr Ayodeji Benson.”

“You bring car sir?” she asked, as if she was sizing him up. In truth, Ella hardly received visitors in her mother’s house, except for a few guys she referred to as ‘business partners. This one certainly looked older than her regular ‘business partners’, but the name matched and she was under instruction to open the gate for Dr Deji Benson.

“Yes” He pointed at his car. “But it’s okay, I don’t need to drive it in.”

“Ha,” grace frowned and said in a whisper, “Cars no dey save outside geeti o.”

“Okay, let me drive in,” he said reluctantly, even though he never planned to spend more than ten minutes with her because of his appointment with Liz. Ella’s impromptu meeting had disrupted his plans for the rest of the day.

Grace closed the pedestrian gate with a loud bang and the main gate flung wide open. He walked briskly to his car and drove it in. He parked it under a grey carport and admired the beautiful compound. The bungalow, painted grey and wine, sat on about two plots of land. There were shrubs and grasses everywhere except for the driveway and the front of the bungalow, maybe there was plan for another building in the compound in future.

Dr Deji was ushered into a decently furnished sitting room by Grace. “Madam go join you now sir.” She said before she disappeared through the kitchen door and out of earshot.

He sat down on a couch but didn’t feel relaxed; it was not a meeting he looked forward to. From the moment he first saw Ella, there was something he found disturbing about her, but like the drowning man that he was, he had agreed to be her pawn.

Ella emerged from an adjoining room a few moments later in a black palazzo pant and a red t-shirt.

“Dr, can you guys still make it to Lagos today?” She asked without exchanging pleasantries with her ‘guest.’

“Hopefully. I am going to see Liz soon as I leave this place.” He answered, without offering his greetings either.
She pulled out a small white envelope and stretched it towards him. “I want you to put this in her carry-on luggage just before you depart for the boarding gate.”

Dr Deji stared at the envelope suspiciously for a few moments. “What’s in the envelope, madam?” He finally asked.
Without mincing words, she smiled and said, “Cocaine.”

Dr deji sat up in shock. “Why? This wasn’t part of the plan, madam!” his eyes widened as he continued to stare at the envelope still clasped in her hands. “She could go to prison, come out in the dailies as a drug peddler. Besides, what if the police find this on me on my way home now or on our way to Lagos?”

Ella smiled with the air of someone who had everything under control. “Dino my driver will drive you to Lagos.”

“Em...ye..yes...,” he stammered, “But the plan was for me to divert her attention from your husband and daughter, make her fall in love with me again, become dependent on me then I break her heart and because she’s hypertensive, she will likely break down and forget about your husband and daughter totally. Please let’s stick to that, madam.”

Ella jumped at her feet in annoyance. “I paid you three million upfront to locate this biatch and destroy her. As far as I’m concerned, this job is not costing you a dime, not even the money for passport and visa!” She hissed and paced the room. “By the way, are you starting to like her? Because if you are, you are in trouble. I have a record of the charges your colleague filed against you in the US and I know how broke you’ve become since your medical practice licence was withdrawn. Do you want Liz to know you are a sex offender?”

“The case didn’t stick, and I was never convicted of any crime, madam...” he said meekly, shoulders drooped, defeat written all over him.

“Take.” He handed the envelope to him. “Put this in her suitcase, ensure you do or it will be found on you. That biatch must suffer for making me a grandma at this age and stage of my life. Which sane mother doesn’t teach her daughter to use protection?” she hissed and handed him another envelope that contained money. “That’s another 500k. Use it wisely.”

Like a dog that was pulled out of the river, Dr Deji collected the money and looked down at his feet, his tail between his legs. ‘Damn the racist judicial system that didn’t give me fair hearing’ he thought. His female colleague, a Mexican had invited him to her house for dinner, then tried seducing him without success. Right there, she had dialled 911 and he was hauled to jail. Thankfully, he was not convicted but somehow, he was suspended from practicing medicine for some time. As a medical doctor, he didn’t qualify for a free defence counsel and he had ended up spending most of his savings. Ella had found him on the streets of New York, listened to his story and promised to help him if he was willing to return to Nigeria. He should have tried to find out a little about her before dusting his box and heading for Nigeria. Thankfully, his elder brother lived in the same county with him and he had moved his children to his place.

“The maid will show you out.”

Ella’s voice jolted him back to reality. “Em...ok...Thanks.” He managed to say before she left the living room. After what seemed like ages, Grace stuck her neck through the doorway and said, “Let’s go sir.”
