So in your micro-cephalic brain, a UK trained former diplomat is an illiterate while the product of cramming, pamphlet buying, cultist den & lecturer settling (aka failed education system) like you is a scholar. Clap for yourself. That alone shows that your attempt at intellectualism, quoting various mushroom publications, is an exercise in futility. Without merit whatsoever.

In your mind, your most powerful Kingdom (Oyo) will just as a matter of picnic come to Otun in Ekiti to plant trees & demarcate territory. Hahaaha! It shows you only go round quoting mostly ethno-centric books that pander to your ego.

Benin can never want anything from Yoruba land. We made that clear by democratically leaving South West barely 3 years after independence. Because we always knew that the contraption called Nigeria was, is and remains a massive aberration. That is why we never deliberately signed any treaty to cede power to the British or anybody. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Water will gradually find its level.

The war the Ijebus fought, important to them for sure and a rare thing, it was of little consequence to the amalgamation of Nigeria.

To the point that even your kinsman Ola Rotimi spurned it and wrote about Ononramwen N'ogbaisi instead. A mere footnote in history is Ijebu fight.

We do not even need to attach to former slave diaspora for attention. We never sold ourselves into slavery.

So you really believe Ogedengbe if truly in a position of strength will just be persuaded by begging to attack Benin. Oh boy, your hero Ogedengbe simply chickened out like the cowards that abound in your area when realised the herculean task ahead of him. Forget that thing. Pure bobos.

Nothing you can about The Great Benin Empire. It is part of extra-ordinary human heritage and intelligence in governance, warfare, arts, culture, civilisation, organisation and more thought impossible for a black man.

As for our women, in life it is good to know your worth. We already did centuries ago by selling no slaves. If a woman must ply the oldest profession on earth, I hundred times prefer a woman hawking her wares for hard currency in international league than for a plate of Amala & ewedu bought by for her by an agbero. If you must eat frog, eat a fat one with plenty of meat. Even the most successful Nigerian footballers sold their kills in the foreign leagues: Okocha, Kanu, Obafemi Martins, Mikael, Peter Odemwingie, late Keshi & Yekini, etc.

Back in local league, the Benin chic called Itohan (with hustle names Wuraola & Zainab) still got your most eligible monarch, Ooni of Ife as hubby. So whatever our women have seem quite in demand. Therefore the joke is on you. grin cheesy

That Benin was betrayed by the relatives of Afonja, mostly likely behind the back of the Benin Prince that is Olu of Warri, should not surprise anyone. After all they routinely betray themselves.

Next time the BBC or any other foreign channel is extolling the glorious feats of ancient Benin Empire, you can smash your TV, your gen or set the your house ablaze in fit of jealous rage. If it's a local TV station rush to their studio in anger, randomly pick out any number of them and start biting their nyansh. shocked shocked

But at the end the antics of an inconsequential tribalist will remain a mere comic relief.
the painful part of these who propaganda by the Yorubas is that they know the truth but tribalism, inferiority complex and low self esteem will never allow them say the truth. Yes Benin did in most. Of course since 1897, several revisionists started gradually. But still in 1979 during coronation of Oba Erediauwa, I remember how many rulers from far and wide came to pay homage and proudly highlighted their traditional vassalage and alliance to Benin. Most of those rulers are gone and Nigeria has ethnically polarised far more since then. Power game & sharing national cake now supersedes everything.

Most of the first Ordjes, Ovies and Obas in many of these parts were Benin princes. Even Brass in Bayelsa. Some still quietly come to be confirmed by Oba of Benin. And when sucession disputes break out, many run to Oba's palace to arbitrate mostly on the ground that they are ancient Benin princes.

I will remind you that for that reason, Oba of Benin once chose a prince of Brass as the Iyase (traditional Prime Minister) of Benin. His family is the well-known Otokiti family in Benin today. As well as two from Eastern Yorubaland. Okoro-Otun being the best known Ado-Akure (Edo n'Ekue) Iyase who served three Obas of Benin. All these within the past 250 years.

The current Iyase is of Urhobo heritage. Iyase is the second position after the Oba. It is non-hereditary and all Edoid people and Benin diaspora people from Imperial times are technically eligible. So a large pool of current Yoruba (isaleko, Idanre, Okitipupa, Owo, much of Ekiti, parts of Ijebuland), Itsekheri nobility/royaltyl (of whom most are Benin descendants), Urhobo/Isoko, Degema (in Rivers State) and many others can be chosen.

Let me remind you that Iginuwa was the son of Oba Olua of Benin. He was sent to Ewere area along the coast to become the Ogiame (Lord/ruler of the seas). With a full reinue of courtiers similar to Oba's own. Hence Ogiame is the Olu's first title. The late Ogiame Atuwatse wanted to annul the Ogiame title years back. His family simply asked him to abdicate until Gov. Uduaghan & Itsekhiri nobility waded in. The Olu quickly ditched the idea. Go & read it.

You guys know very little about the imperial past of Benin. It is woven into the fabric of Benin life. In its diversity. Even in the morning greetings.

Much of what I know about history I learnt from people born around 1870/1875. Some were even nearly 20 years old in 1897 when Britain attacked Benin. They were well over 100 in the 1980s. All consistently telling us same story. I did not need modern historians to know as a child. Not much different from written version. I did not begin learning history just to argue online. There was no internet or mobile phone when I began.

As for killing Benin soldiers, remember that propaganda is the first tool of war. When Americans were about taking Baghdad, that funny Iraqi minister said life on TV that American soldiers were committing suicide outside Baghdad. cheesy grin

You can chose the propaganda version that panders to your primordial tribalistic instincts.

In any case, why go to war if you are not prepared to die. Benin were never cowards.

A UK trained diplomat who spends his entire time on NL giving credence to a meme as a reputable reference? Your parents or whatever body gave you the scholarship should probably seek a refund immediately.

Training in the UK or Timbuktu does not gurantee you are much more learned than the next person and it does not automatically require that we fall in line when you speak. You know nothing about me to have assumed I schooled in Nigeria or not. Besides, the Nigerian university system you labelled with all kinds of adjectives churn out graduate students leading different fields in the USA.

In your mind, your most powerful Kingdom (Oyo) will just as a matter of picnic come to Otun in Ekiti to plant trees & demarcate territory. Hahaaha! It shows you only go round quoting mostly ethno-centric books that pander to your ego.

I'll wait for you to cite sources stating Oyo & Bini engaged in warfare at Otun and I will post Otun sources stating otherwise.

After borrowing our monarchy, art and benefiting from Awolowo's welfarist programs of th 60s?

The war the Ijebus fought, important to them for sure and a rare thing, it was of little consequence to the amalgamation of Nigeria.

In your parochial view, it is of no consequence to the amalgamation of Nigeria but without Ijejbu uprising being subdued, the penetration into the hinterlands of Yoruba would be difficult and this would affect the process towards and eventual amalgamation - Mr. UK trained former diplomat cheesy

To the point that even your kinsman Ola Rotimi spurned it and wrote about Ononramwen N'ogbaisi instead. A mere footnote in history is Ijebu fight.

People write about what interests them all the time. Ulli Biere was a renowned versatile German scholar who dedicated most of his life writing about Yoruba culture while there was still so much to write about the Germany since pre Holy-Roman/Habsburg empire to post Unification of Germany. Does this make Yoruba greater than Germany? You see why the UK school needs to withdraw her certificate from you asap?

We do not even need to attach to former slave diaspora for attention. We never sold ourselves into slavery.

Since pre-historica period, powerful nations have sold people into slavery and they have been sold too. Benin not being able to sell anyone into slavery but getting sold by Itsekiri into slavery tells alot about Benin's army.

So you really believe Ogedengbe if truly in a position of strength will just be persuaded by begging to attack Benin. Oh boy, your hero Ogedengbe simply chickened out like the cowards that abound in your area when realised the herculean task ahead of him. Forget that thing. Pure bobos.

You are getting petty here and starting to get like the igbos when they debate Biafra war (no insult to them).

It is on record, the British have records of Ogedengbe's exploits and were aware of his plots to sack Bini. Your Obas appeasement with slaves, beggings etc are on record as well.

Nothing you can about The Great Benin Empire. It is part of extra-ordinary human heritage and intelligence in governance, warfare, arts, culture, civilisation, organisation and more thought impossible for a black man.

An empire that covered Obalende, Lagos Island, Akoko areas, parts of Delta ans Onitsha is the great Empire? cheesy grin

Are you Musiwa or Musiwa's twin?

As for our women, in life it is good to know your worth. We already did centuries ago by selling no slaves. If you knew the story behind her situation with Ooni you would hide your head in shame. After child birth, she'll be swept quickly to the side by a Yoruba queen who is already in the pipeline.

And wasn't it like 15 or 20 Naira that was paid as her bride price?

Bini vajayinas come cheap cheesy?

No wonder Oranmiyan knacked one & bailed back to Ife.

That Benin was betrayed by the relatives of Afonja, mostly likely behind the back of the Benin Prince that is Olu of Warri, should not surprise anyone. After all they routinely betray themselves.

The great Itsekiri conquered Bini in a battle that they went as far as conscripting mercinaries from Lagos & getting arms from Britain for. Serious military historians know Bini the touted Bini military exploits is all jokes. Scholars see through your shenanigans and continuous struggles to put yourselves in the leagues of the great but like a toddler trying to do adult things, they let you slide because it is fun to watch & read the jargons from you lot.

Whenever BBC, History Channel, Discovery & other TV stations want to extoll Benin art and they begin by telling you how it is an offshoot of Ife art and how Ife art HEAVILY helped & influenced Bini art then well, swallow a bullet or something.

You still don't get it that whatever greatness is alloted to Bini, Ife is mentioned first

Bini did not achieve the minute greatness it has by standing alone, it depended heavily on Ife/Yoruba cheesy

But at the end the antics of an inconsequential tribalist will remain a mere comic relief.

Says the Bini supremacist grin

I beg you in the name of Osanobua & Ogiso, please list the area Bini empire covered.

According to: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benin_Empire

At its maximum extent, the empire extended from the western Ibo tribes on the shores of the Niger river, through parts of the southwestern region of Nigeria (much of present-day Ondo State, and the isolated islands (current Lagos Island and Obalende) in the coastal region of present-day Lagos State).

Note that the page was clearly written and edited by Bini people.

Ondo - Akoko areas.

Ibo land - Onitsha area.

Lagos - Obalende & Island.

Are these all that mae up the 'great enpire'? Like seriously? cheesy

Who in the western world know Bini's nitwit pseudo empire? The only thing they were appreciated for was their small neat road network and also because of their great Artwork which were derived from ILE IFE Artwork. Nothing else. Please don't mind those blatant liars...

Yes, you are right! They even try to subdue the Ogiamien's lineage because it buttress the point that Yoruba stood on as Oranmiyan had no alliance with them genealogically until he was sent there. But they turned around in the 20th century to claim Odua. Little did they know that Odua wasn't even the man's name but where they came from originally. A man who came with thousands of people from Egypt of the same tribes. If not, how come Yoruba have not less than 35% or more Egyptians language incorporated into their language as well as Israelites language? Do Bini have any Egyptians language or Israelites language in theirs? Do Bini even know how Yoruba lineage of Adimuela was buried in the ancient before Oranmiyan came into contact with EDO?, Millions of people are related to Odua and blood don't lies. In the whole of Africa, Yoruba religion is different. IFA, was thought to them, likewise so many Yoruba intermediaries deities. Let them continue and wallow in lies. There is even a sculpture of Yoruba tribal marked person in Bini court that is in the London museum. The British historians and archaeologists will keep laughing at them constantly because of these mind blowing distortion of history..

That there was the reason I asked if you were a christian to which you answered yes.

Oduduwa's original source had been a thing of secret since time immemorial and as a result, the traditionalist who are not ife orogin, the christians and muslims have tried to fill the void by concocting different types of theories.

The chain from the sky theory, the Mecca theory and the Egypt theory. You applied the latter in your post which to me is unfounded and a wild guess.

Ife had 13 communities, some were in the valley while some were up the hill; there were 2 groups of Ife.

Oduduwa and his clan were part of those settled on the hill known as Oke Ora.

They up the hill had limited access to water and fertile lands for farming that they had to come down the hill to get these needs; it led to life long generational conflict between hil dwellers and the valley settlers.

The clash only came to a head during Oduduwa's time.

Where Oduduwa's and his generation lived before him is some sort of holy site and its location is obfuscated to prevent people from going there. With the tourism oriented background of the present Ooni he may decide to open it up but I doubt it much because it is the place where every Ooni's coronation starts from. Every Ooni elect goes up the hill, wears certain stuff from that place, comes down the hill into Ife then heads first to Obatala's house.

The only persons who have gone there who were not part of the Idio clan (Oduduwa's clan) were Prof Eluyemi Omotoso and his European colleagues who went up there for excavations (of course they had to be initiated into stuff prior). During the excavation, they discovered different artifacts dating further cementing the 350BCE dating other excavations in other places in Ife gave. And the excavated materials also proved that the place was well inhabited and there was a working village system there.

So, it is painful to many of us who know where Oduduwa came from but we are bound to keep quiet in the face of infuriating jargons like the Bini history of Oduduwa.

What brought Oduduwa & his people down the hill was the need to have share of fertile grounds. This forever reshaped Ife settlement & politics.

He managed to command the respect and support of other Ife kings who were under Obatala. He built his place in Ife (now the palace) not too far from Obatala's palace. Then there were two palaces and the same group who would go to greet Oduduwa would go to greet Obatala and vice versa until Obameri decided to crush Obatala's kingship and subjugate him under Oduduwa. He sacked Obatala's palace (now a temple) and made sure he exiled Obatala who was later appeased to return to Ife.

Obatala became the spiritual head in Ife and Oduduwa became the political/military head. Ife was practically restructured.

The Idio Family in Ife is a conglomerate of those who lived up the hill but came down with Oduduwa and they are settled in Ife somewhere close to the palace.

The Ideta family (mine) are Obatala's offsprings, they have massive lands in Ife - Itapa & Mokuro.

This civil war led to Ugbo's migration to present day Ondo state.

The war also led to Ugbo's attacks on Ife that brought Moremi into the limelight.

Opal, I just decide to be looking at these people sometimes.

They claim that virtually everything Benin comes from Yoruba land.

These words are very archaic Benin words, many even taken away by migrants from Benin area like Isoko/Urhobo people around 500 to 800 years ago.

What is happening is that SW people are using early educational advantage & numerical size to try to claim everything Benin has ever achieved.
If they are not claiming Benin Bronze as coming from Ife, they are claiming Benin ancient religions as theirs.

Even though some hate to admit it my SW people are intensely fascinated by Benin History. That is itself not a bad thing, after all such fascination is largely universal. You can witness it museums in Paris, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, across the US and beyond.

It is quite amusing if you ask me.

The reason why we cannot just look at them is that at this rate, they may soon get quite audacious to begin to claim that renowned Benin artworks like 1977 FESTAC Idia mask, and the leopard were stolen from Yorubaland. They only need to plant it in SW controlled-media. We all saw what the likes of super-liars like Lai Mohammed did to Jonathan.

They need to know that such lies cannot be tolerated.

Thanks Opal: my name is AreaFada. Seun changed it Areafada..whatever after Nairaland was hacked years back.

That is the truth.

These Benin Empire deniers are like anti-semitic holocaust deniers. They are jealous children of hate. They are so pained that they like to paint their poo as gold and others as nothing. But in so doing they expose their deep-seated insecurities in the face of overwhelming facts.

When they were not allowed to claim Benin as part of Yorubaland & Benin arts as their, they suddenly went about a hate campaign of empire denial. Suddenly they came with Sungbo Eredo as larger than Benin moats and ramparts. Even the Chinese are still struggling to prove that Chinese wall (a country of around 1.4 billion people) are still struggling to convince the world that their walls are larger than Benin Earth works. By the time Udo town moats and other town walls/moats are fully studied, the Chinese will be no match even.

Why Benin gives them so much nightmares & sleepless nights is beyond me.

They hype themselves like empty barrels & noise makers. Luckily we understand their nature from history and deal with them with a barge pole.

See how they are hyping their VP now. They are carelessly & boastfully exposing their main purpose of hyping/supporting Buhari initially. They were so envious of Jonathan's providence that they impatiently wanted one for themselves too. They cannot even wait for Buhari to answer God's call first. Since only God knows who will go first. Not necessarily by age or obvious health status.

The careless empire denier there called Oba an illiterate. I know his former UK university and is by no means a low ranking school. His school mates I know went on to work for some of the biggest multi-nationals worldwide. The Prince himself excelled in business & went on to become Nigerian Ambassador to many countries. I also personally knew some Nigerian ambassadors in Europe (one even was Yoruba, who I will not name for privacy sake) in the 1990s, and none had a better education than the Prince.

Ordinarily, I would not mind their envy but lots of sensible silent readers visit Nairaland so records have to be set straight.

The most funny thing is when they quote their pioneer empire denier writers mostly from Ibadan Press as authority. I do not know how they expect those to impress even a primary school boy from Benin. grin cheesy

Bini vultures gathering cheesy

They have been badly bruised and have decided to group up in order to lick each others wounds and pat each other's back grin

I wonder why the source of your monarchy & art will be jealous of you. It is like saying the fathers to all of you are jealous all of you have made more progress than them.

I beg you all, all ye best brains from Benin on this thread in the name of Osanobua & Ogiso, please list the area Bini empire covered.

Are these all that made up the 'great empire'? Like seriously?

This map was there before the Kiriji war

This map, to you depicts the powerful empires in W.Africa, correct sir?

Sadly, the purpose of the map is/was to depict slave ports and kingdoms controlling the ports.

And you can see it says Benin Kingdom, not Benin empire

Joao de Barros in his accounts wrote of a possible pre-Christian influence in ancient Benin Kingdom:- “Among the many things which the king D. Jodo learnt from the ambassador of the king of Benin and also from Joao Afonso d Aveiro of what they had been told by the inhabitants of these regions was that a Kingdom twenty moons journey away from Benin Kingdom which according to their account and the short journeys they made would be about two hundred and fifty of our leagues (5.556km or 3.456 is a league) there lived the most powerful monarch of these parts who was called “Ogane”. Among the pagan chiefs of the territories of Benin, Ogane was held in as great veneration as is the supreme Pontif with us.

“In accordance with a very ancient custom, the King of Benin, on ascending the throne, sends ambassadors to Ogane with rich gifts to announce that by the decease of his predecessor, he has succeeded to the Kingdom of Benin and request confirmation.

To signify his assent, the Prince Ogane sends the King a staff and a head piece of shining brass fashioned like a Spanish helment in place of a crown and scepter. He also sends a cross, likewise of brass to be worn round the neck, a holy and religious emblem similar to that worn by the KNIGHTS of the order of Saint JOHN.
Without these emblems the people do not recognize the King as lawful ruler, nor can he call himself truly king.”

“All the time this ambassador is at the court of Ogane, he never sees the Prince, but only the curtains of silk behind which he sits, for he is regarded as sacred. When the ambassador is leaving, he is shown a foot below the curtains as a sign that the Prince is within and agrees to the matters that he has raised; this foot they reverence as thought it were a sacred relic”

“As a kind of reward for the hardships of such a journey, the ambassador receives a small CROSS, similar to that sent to the King, which is thrown around his neck to signify that he is free and exempt from all servitudes and privileged in his native country as the KNIGHTS are with us.

“In the year 1510 A.D Certain ambassadors of the king of Benin came to this kingdom, among whom was a man about seventy years of age who was wearing one of these CROSSES. I asked him the reason and he gave me an explanation similar to the above.

I will call my folks to find out more. I am sure he has an interesting history.

The emboldened, I heard that a lot.

I witnessed one of the wars. While vacationing in Ife with granny, war broke out and we were trapped. Parents freaked out as usual but we were sent back to Lagos after a few weeks.

Wait, Owa Luusi is the same as Owalusin that emigrated from Ife, correct?

If that is correct then pardon my ignorance, yes I know of Owalusin (Owa Luusi).

I think the Modakeke war during Ekiti parapo was during Ajamaiye's time?

Ojaja I, present Ooni's grandfather was the Ooni at this time. Sadly, it was the Ibadan who imposed him on us and well, he didn't sell his loyalty because of that, he didn't hesitate to let the Modakeke know who the boss was.

So your grand father was Ajamaiye?

You must be a Prince then.

Do you ever attend the Owalusin festival in your home town? I guess not, you are a Christian grin

Bro, ypu better come back and hug the system that sustained our fore fathers and leave the christianity that has done us more damage than good.

In addition, I think the founder of your town was part of Giesi house. The present Ooni's house; I'm related to the house by blood but a bit distant.

Since your second hometown (ife is your first home town) is in the eastern parts of Yoruba land then you must have records of Bini activities there then.

I I salute you with humility my brother. But kindly don't mention the place of our second abode. My home town is forever in my heart and his descendants hearts. Edo came in the ancient and they were killed. Even the Nupes were not spared...The Edo on this platform just run their mouth because they have access to internet and by so doing want to manipulate history. But leave them to their woes and sorrow
