New Era Of Word Censorship On Nairaland by Seun(m): 11:02am On Dec 07, 2009 |
Dear Nairalanders, We have recently been informed that Google is not happy with the kind of language Nairalanders use on the Nairaland Forum. They have even taken punitive measures against us to drive home the point that they want Nairaland to be clean: no dirty language, illegal activities, etc. As a result of this, we had no choice but to install a strong word filter to eliminate any words which are embarrassing to advertisers or not family-friendly. We are also putting the Sexuality section in a hidden area, because there's no family-friendly way to discuss sexuality. You have to understand that my hands are tied. We have no choice on this matter. So please, any Nairalander that attempts to bypass the censorship filter in any way will be treated as a spammer. You're going to be banned both by human beings and bots. There are millions of topics we can discuss without having to use x-rated words. Let's focus on them! Regards, Seun Osewa. Will there be a list of words that can or cannot be used on the forum? We may sleepwalk into a big brother house here. 1 Like |

Yes, the language used by some members is enough to turn the air blue. Hopefully, people will bide by this, and learn that it's possible to interract without swearing, or using other foul language. |

I am soooooooooooooooooooo in tandem with this development especially hiding the sexuality section. I wish the the same could be done for Romance and Dating & meeting sections. . . .but i guess that would be asking for too much. Meanwhile, are google going to do the same with other forums? I'd like to believe that the choice of words used on Nairaland is nothing compared to other forums. |

GOOD. This is welcome. I wonder when it became acceptable for people to freely use lewd language. It appears we all compete to see who uses the worst language here. |

Even though i do not subscribe to foul language i strongly disagree with Google.overlordship.On.The.Internet. Freedom of expression knows no border virtual or physical howbeit with a measure of limitation. Forum with explicit contents at worst should come with a warning and probably an age restriction and a caveat but not outright removal, i do hope thats not what you're contemplating my good man |

Seun:Strong ENGLISH word filter? How about strong YORUBA/IGBO/HAUSA word filter? How about hiding other sections? Cos any section can be used. NLs are crafty you know. I pray you will be able to control them as some of them are self-employed full time NL bloggers. Best Wishes |

Seun:come off it Mr Admin, are u tryinna tell me that if i google any of these words they wont yield results.Abeg I know believe U jor. Am not even bothered about the censorship what I find annoying are the replacements of those words. . . .they lose their intended meaning and most of them mean totally different things. There's a very big difference in meaning btw O.rgasm and Halleluya that smacks off laziness on Ur part. . . U re spoiling everything may be U shoul creat a thread and list words U want ppl to help U with their substitutes. . . Not this manliness shyt, that sound silly in context. |
Re: New Era Of Word Censorship On Nairaland by Nobody: 12:13pm On Dec 07, 2009 |
Rhymz, if members stuck to the rules, and conversed without swearing, or using vulgar language, there'd be no need for censorship, so posts wouldn't "lose their meaning", as you put it. I'm on other forums, no need posting a list, but members converse as adults, without the need for abusive language. The fact swear words and similar can be Googled and yield results, doesn't make them right for everyday conversation! |

Re: New Era Of Word Censorship On Nairaland by Nobody: 12:25pm On Dec 07, 2009 |
At first I was miffed by the fact that there was no explanation for the new era of censorship but after reading Seun's explanation, I must admit that it makes a lot of sense. However, I believe that we can still discuss the same things without using overtly explicit terms. Well done |
