AutoReportNG:
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday confirmed the appointment of world-famous Jelani Aliyu reputed to be the designer of the Chevrolet Volt as the director-general of the Nigerian Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC).

Jelani Aliyu currently works with popular vehicle manufacturer, General Motors (GM) where he has worked since 1997.

Aliyu’s invention, the Chevrolet Volt, a battery-powered, extended range passenger vehicle was in the past described as GM’s “most electrifying advanced technologically advanced vehicle.”

Jelani Aliyu has picked up many awards for his invention and in January 2014, the United States Environmental Protection Agency voted the Chevrolet Volt as the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the market.

As DG of the NADDC, Jelani Aliyu will be responsible for the review and implementation of Nigeria’s automotive industry development policy. A previous policy covering the period from 2013 to 2015 appeared to have laid the foundation for the growth of local vehicle assembly plants in the country.

An indigenous vehicle manufacturer, Innoson Motors is believed to be one of many testaments to the automotive policy about which not much has been said in recent times.

As exciting as it appears to have Mr Jelani Aliyu head the Nigerian automotive council, it remains to be seen if he would be eager to leave his position at GM for the quite uncertain terrain of a Nigerian agency where decision making is bound to be affected by political interests.

PMB has not come to the realisation that our problem is not policy formulation bt actual implementation.
Some cabas who place personal interest above National are bent in destroying any policy no matter how good.
Anybody close to the aliyu should tell him what he should prepare to face,IMPENETRABLE CABALS.

Pat Utomi that ran down Peugeot Nigeria? If Nigeria market is not large enough with about 180 million people, tell me which market is large enough? Biafruad market? Go and die jejely jooor.

Utomi did not run down Volkswagen. Or was he the one that ran down Peoguot as well?

The collapse of the naira in the eighties spelt doom for the 2 companies.
.
Also, despite the fact they were in business for over 10 years, they almost completely on imported CKD's to manufacture the cars.

It collapse in the 1980s of these 2 companies should have been an eye opener.

Please when making arguments refrain from calling people names such as Ipob etc. I am 100% Yoruba. It is not constructive and is just petty

Only in Nigeria do you hail an appointment like this..... putting the cart before the horse.

A country with no steel production has this kind of parastatal > LOL

Sad thing is I see him taking up this role as they would have told him the same lingo " Dont say no to your father land" also
its not as if his role @ General Motors was setting the world alight, there are man Senior Creative Designers within GM on the same 70 to 85K salary which they sure will match with a bigger sume to entice hime back to Nigeria.

If he's wise he will reject this role..... Nigeria is known for making the best in their field end up bn ordinary and basic when you answer the Nigerian call

Southern christians are out in full force against this man simply because he's a northern muslim.

If some young punk from the south had built a rickety wooden cart, or repurposed existing drones to craft an ugly, barely functional clone, they'd be celebrating IPOD 'ingenuity'.

Envious fools.

By the way, Bob boniface is the actual designer of the Volt. Jelani's name is nowhere in the Volt's wiki page.

What gives? Is this another Emegwali?

Without sounding like am hating, this guy seems to me as a great CAD designer but you need someone who knows how stuff gets made to head the automotive industry

Don't be surprised if this aliyu fails to make an impact

We need Someone who gets the supply chain,

Sitting behind the computer and designing stuff in CAD is different from the real world

I concur. I mean just look at nnaji, the former minister of power enticed into nigeria then frustrated out of the ministry due to politics. The same man single handedly built a gas power plant at Aba to electrify the place for greater industrialization, but was frustrated from delivering the electricity to the people. This is an eminent man in US benefiting fron various US patents in his name.

Or are we talking about okonjo iweala?...
