Nope!!! I don't agree with you. Where we failed is not whether we the South are united or not. Where we failed is we the progressive forces mostly in the South allowed CYNICS to define the political narative of the country. The notion that the same people who promote sectional unity and sectional interest can yet lay claim to being for the unity and progress of the whole country more than everyone else in the country is an anomaly (or puzzle) about Nigerian politics that I am yet to understand.

So when you glorify the ability of certain sections of the country being united on the basis of nothing else other than looking alike, speaking the same language or believing in the same religion, you design a battle in which there can be only one winner. When you bemoan the South for being disunited you are simply promoting the very cynical politics that holds this country back from progress.

The South does not need to be united for the sake of it because we are South and predominantly christain. Trust me that will be bad politics and will not work and in fact this is the very kind of politics which we all need to render obsolete. Reason being this is the kind of politics that sustains any kind of percieved hegemony. Christainity is a Religion based on an individual's personal appreciation of the Religion itself, while Islam thrives on dogmas; so it is no rocket science why Muslims Northerners will always easily regroup along religious lines. This behaviour is also fuelled by illiteracy and indifference to asking questions and lack of ambition.
The south need to be united on issues, policies, ideas, fight for human rights, universal education, poverty eradication. These are messages you can take to all parts of Nigeria and find allies most importantly in the middle belt.

This is the same strategy used by black America  to make progress in a country that is predominantly white. They knew that in a battle of white vs Black, blacks will always loose because they don't have the numbers. If all black people came together to vote, their vote alone will not be enough to power Obama to the white house.
Black people redifined their struggle into social issues like, Healthcare, Education for all Americans, economic Justice for all Americans, protection of the Fundamental Human Rights of all Americans. They know that these issues are issues that will appeal to both white and blacks alike but if achieved majority of blacks will benefit because blacks are disproportionately in the lower scale of the economic ladder.

So this same concept can work in Nigeria.

The South need to come up with progressive messages that people from all parts of the country can identify with albeit predominantly southerners and Northern Christains at first. But this process must begin with the rejection of the politics that says there is anything fashionable about politcal leaders fraternising along ethnic lines and religious lines and openly telling us they are defending the interest of the North as opposed to that of the country and yet people glorify it by asking others to follow such blind ideas. You know I have heard people say o yea Ndigbo are not united, south are not united, North are more united and then you see the same people turn around to protest the practice of Sharia in the North as a state religion and other attrocities. Well that is a direct consequence of people pursuing sectional interest as oppsed to National interest. So you can not eat your cake and have it.

So like I said in the beginning. We need to redifine the political narative. We need to stop celebrating the myth of a united North. It has not done anything good for their own people in the last 50years. it has nit done anything good for their neigbours in the last 50 years. It has certainly not beein in the interest of Nigeria in the last 50years. Its time to redifine the political narative and change the consience of the country for the better.
