The Uselessness of the SANDF.

South Africa’s Arms Deal Toys Rotting
October 9, 2014

Weapons acquired during the 1999 arms deal are not being used and are becoming derelict, the Seriti Commission of Inquiry heard on Tuesday [October 7].

“With regards to the 30 Augusta helicopters purchased from Italy, I am informed that many of them are in storage and unused or rotting at Ysterplaat Air Force Base in Cape Town,” arms deal critic Terry Crawford-Browne told the inquiry’s hearings in Pretoria.

“Accordingly, I invite the commission’s members to inspect Ysterplaat, to see for themselves how many there are in their state of airworthiness.”

He said government acquired four frigates that were reportedly equipped with defective engines and an obsolete combat suite and armoury system.

“South Africa acquired three submarines that spend most of the time on the ‘hard’ at Simon’s Town and 50 BAE Hawk and BAE/Saab Gripen fighter aircraft for which the country had almost no pilots to fly them, mechanics to maintain them, or even the money to fuel them.

“The arms deal was a confidence trick played at huge socio-economic cost to the people of South Africa, which has seriously undermined our still-fragile constitutional democracy,” said Crawford-Browne.

The commission was appointed by President Jacob Zuma three years ago to investigate alleged corruption in the arms procurement deal in 1999.

For billions of rands government acquired, among other hardware, 26 Gripen fighter aircraft and 24 Hawk lead-in fighter trainer aircraft for the air force, and frigates and submarines for the navy.

Crawford-Browne said former deputy defence minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge was told by senior navy officials that the country had bought the wrong equipment.

“Ms Madlala-Routledge has by e-mail authorised me to reveal this,” he said.

Madlala-Routledge was deputy defence minister from 1999 to April 2004 and deputy health minister from April 2004 to August 2007.

Crawford-Browne said billions spent on these purchases could have been used to improve the lives of South Africans.

“While millions of South Africans struggle daily with the legacies of apartheid and poverty, these men childishly expounded about their pride in so-called toys for boys and other irrelevances,” he said in his affidavit to the inquiry.

“Astonishingly, a purported justification for the acquisition of the BAE Gripen warplanes included protection for the 2010 World Cup.”

The inquiry continues.

All that machismo can't be backed up by nothing.

"Mild" sanctions brought them to their knees forcing them to retire jets. Today their crying babies towards the west's policy.

Mild sanctions brought you to your knees in Angolan bush war.

It can happen again and cripple all your European imported jets, warships, submarines etc.

Militants are known to launch attacks from border

Dozens of militants were reportedly killed when
Nigerian fighter jets on Thursday afternoon
bombed a major Boko Haram base near Lake
Chad, eyewitnesses have said.
"Air force fighter jets are currently hitting Wulgo
village, which is on the banks of Lake Chad. The
strategy is to flush them from the area," a military
officer privy to the operation told Anadolu Agency
on condition of anonymity.
"The militants were found attacking nearby towns
and settlements from Wulgo, where they have a
fortress," he said.
Saidu Batagarawa, a Fulani herdsman in the
area, said the military had warned local residents
ahead of the aerial operation.
"Boko Haram had long stationed themselves in
Wulgo and other villages near Fotokol in
neighboring Cameroon," Batagarawa, who spoke in
the local Fulfude dialect, told AA by phone.
"It appears to be their launch base, but the
soldiers are now smoking them out," he added.
Batagarawa suggested that up to 45 insurgents
had been killed in the bombardments.
"They are trying to escape. We are aware that they
have a tunnel through which they escape," he
said. "But we exposed this to the troops long ago."
Militants are known to launch attacks from border
communities and then escape through waterways
in the area – a strategy that is now being thwarted
by deepening regional cooperation between
Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger.
Following a meeting in Nigerien capital Niamey on
Tuesday, the leaders of Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Benin
and Cameroon agreed to form a "joint force" to
combat Boko Haram.
In May, the five countries agreed to deploy a joint
force composed of some 700 troops as part of a
wider strategy for combating the militant group.
Boko Haram, which means "Western education is
forbidden" in Nigeria's local Hausa language, first
emerged in the early 2000s preaching against
government misrule and corruption.
It later became violent, however, after the death of
its leader in 2009 while in police custody.
In the five years since, the shadowy sect has been
blamed for numerous attacks – on places of
worship and government institutions – and
thousands of deaths in Nigeria.
The group has also been blamed for several earlier
cross-border attacks in Cameroon.

South Africa too could not build her own jet fighters or even ordinary air to air missiles to replace the weak Mirage jets France sold to you, you kept complaining of Cuba's MiG-23 air superiority throughout the war. So what makes you better?

The G-5 and G-6 artillery technology was imported and sold to South Africa by a Canadian, while the Nuclear bomb technology was imported from Israel and sold to you.

South African arms industry was built by secret b..reast feeding from oversees throughout the arms embargo. Learn to quote history

MTN and all SA firms cannot be nationalised by Nigerian government, they can only be banned to operate in Nigeria.

World Bank Cuts Nigeria's Poverty Rate to 33.1%, Says North is Poorer

Quote:

22 Jul 2014

*Predicts 7.4% growth in 2014
James Emejo

The World Bank Tuesday said there had been positive economic trend as well as significant progress made towards poverty eradication in the country.

It said in its second edition of the Nigeria Economic Report (NER) which was launched in Abuja that going by the recent rebasing of the economy as well as analysis from the new General Household Surveys (GHS) conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) with the support of the Bank, new poverty estimates in 2010/2011 and 2012/2013 should be within the range of 35.2 per cent and 33.1 per cent respectively.

It stated that an analysis of a panel survey data (GHS) of 5000 households for 2010/2011 and 2012/2013 provided "evidence that consumption is likely higher than previously estimated from the HNLSS survey."

Furthermore, the new GHS analysis put rural poverty at 46.3 per cent and 44.9 per cent in 2010/2011 and 2012/2013 respectively compared to 69.1 per cent and 51.2 per cent respectively in the HNLSS 2009/2010 estimates by the NBS.

The World Bank estimates further suggested that the number of poor Nigerians remained at 58 million adding that more than half of the figure are located in the North- east or North- west.

Specifically, it noted:" Poverty rates range from 16 per cent in the South- West to 52 per cent in the North-East. While the South and North central experienced declines in the poverty rate between 2010/2011 and 2012/2013, the poverty rate increased almost unchanged in the North West."
http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/...poorer/184259/

Because the world bank re-defined what they describe as poverty.

We have been over this.

Old irrelevant story, forgone conclusion.

All those soldiers have been tried and sentenced to death by court martial.

60 men out of a 150,000 man army = 0.04% tiny insignificant numbers.

Nigerian army does NOT tolerate cowardice like were army union members chose which war they want or don't want to fight.....50,000 South African soldiers, a whole complete army refused to go fight Selaka rebels and save fellow Africans from the ravages of war in C.A.R allowing innocent civilians to perish.

Then your army still gave them medals of national honour for an offence that Nigerian army gives death sentence !

SANDF = BUSHMEN-ZULU HUNTERS grin grin

Please post a citation which shows that the Military Untion refused to fight Seleka

Nigeria does NOT need South Africa, 90% of our arms are purchased from Russia - China axis in the last 10 years.

What have we ever bought from you? MRAPS only and in very few numbers.

Tell me what weapon South Africa produces that we cannot get from Russia, India, Israel, China ? Nothing !!!!
