Are you there when it happens?

Or you base your assumption on "them say them say principle"

Probably must be he was filling his gen while it was running

The fact some people believe this crap, and some are even justifying it by pulling pseudo-scientific from their ass, says alot about education in this country. HOW CAN A PHONE CALL IGNITE GAS?? are u people mad??

Gas is not petrol ffs, one idiot even said phones generate sparks wen call comes in...

y'all messed up in this country....

Google failed him? But all these myths helped you, right? The same Grace Gas where they use metal to hit gas cylinder that was leaking gas!

You're given a perfectly valid scientific sequence of events, and off you go dragging in the spiritual.

For the same reason we're advised not to get in/out of the car while pumping gas, or smoke cigarettes at the pump, etc..

In dryer climates, you can generate static electricity by motion (cloth rubbing on body), which is then discharged upon contact with a metal object, like a car or pump. The discharge causes a spark which can ignite the fumes of gas or petrol. She might have accidentally caused some static discharge (though I don't know what the phone had to do with it). It doesn't happen too often, but as you can see, it does happen.

It's unfortunate it happened (RIP to her), and in saner countries, there'd be an investigation into the leakage.
You should have just posted the bolded part.

One of the safety rules in a filling station is not to receive calls and switch off all engines, that's why when people normally scoop fuel and the fuel explode, it must be as a result of a phone call, that's very dangerous, and even the pump attendant was not even security conscious, so unfortunate.
Not as a result of phone calls but as a result of two metal containers hitting one another and causes spark.

Very simple, phone emits Electromagnetic wave and one of the characteristic of electromagnetic wave is high energy in form of heat, may be during filling of the cylinder there was much accumulation of heat from the phone which collided with the gas molecules leading to the ignition and note electromagnetic wave is invisible. People with little knowledge of physics will understand better.
Why are we not feeling this heat even if we can't see it? Or, are we not supposed to feel this "heat"? Many links have been provided, stop believing in myth.

Some Nairalanders are funny for their epic comments like "Village people" "itz a lie" etc Dont u guys go to petrol station & see the sign that switch off ur phone here. Phn calls emits radioactive waves & can trigger explosions where there is/are highly inflammable matter
Lol. Is this a fantasy science or fiction?

President of Rotary Club International, Olori Opeyemi Omobolawa Fola, has died as result of gas explosion in Osogbo.

This happened barely 48 hours after a gas cylinder explosion triggered by a phone call, killed three people in Sagamu, Ogun State.

The sad incident happened on Wednesday December 13, 2017. The trained senior nurse who was also the President, Rotary Club International, GRA, Osogbo, was said to have gone to the popular Grace Gas, Osogbo, to refill her cylinder, when she suddenly had a call and brought out her phone from her pocket.

According to an eyewitness, the phone exploded instantly, set the woman and her car on fire, flung the cylinder to a far distance. Some others were also said to have been seriously injured as a result of the explosion.

But it was on 8 December not 13......

This is bullshit. Electromagnetic radiation from a mobile phone isnt enough to collide with cylinder gas vapours to [produce sparks enough to cause such deadly explosion or even ionizing radiation that can knock off electron(s) from an atom.

I heard a similar bullshit yesterday about cellphone electromags causing brain cancer

According to an eyewitness, the phone exploded instantly, set the woman and her car on fire, flung the cylinder to a far distance. Some others were also said to have been seriously injured as a result of the explosion.

about the further narration above, even an EMP can't fling a 12.5kg cylinder (to a far distance).

If the story is to be true, then terrorists simply need to mass order only LPG-filled gas cylinders and mobile phones

Re: Margaret Omobolawa Opeyemi Dies Of Phone Triggered Gas Explosion by LemonBoy1: 12:03pm On Dec 16, 2017
In the good old days of early mobile phones, phones had keypads that works on same principles as our regular domestic electric switch. That is, when u depress your keypad, the positive and negative terminals beneath the keypads on the panel will contact to send electric signals to the IC of the phone which further sends instructions to the processor etc (those that repair phones will easily understand this). Also, a spark is generated. The magnitude of these sparks increases with age of phone, quality of phone and usage (how u depress the keypad) at the filling station

The contact between the terminals generates spark that is very minimal and sometimes unseen or unnoticed by naked eyes but very substantial in critical placea like refineries, gas stations, fuel stations etc where the presence of excited hydrocarbons are excessive. Our phones are not water tight hence air penetrates into the phone( d reason u notice little traces of dust in the phone when u dismantle your phone). Hence, in a hydrocarbon saturated atmospher, your phone will have a high presence of these excited hydrocarbons inside/within its panel as a result of diffusion or pressure diffrential.

So when your phone has collected these hydrocarbon, and you depress your keypad, the terminal contacts and releases a spark, then boom, the already excited hydrocarbon will be very obliged to reward you with an explosion.

Same thing goes for camera. The shutter sometime causes spark and the camera light generates heat.

These days of soft touch phones has eliminated the presence of keypad sparks to some extent. However, the touch pads works based on d principle of static electricity which is very negligible but could still be dangerous especially in highly concentrated areas like refineries and gas plant.

The touch pad still works by the original principle of positive terminal contacting with negative terminal in order to send a signal to the IC. The IC could generates more heat and sparks when picking a call because of the antena engagement. It may be likened to an induction motor that consumes more power when started. That is what happens when you pick a call.
