BTW, if the Yorubas were as aggressive as the North, ewoooooooo. You think the North would do anything if the Yorubas starts killing the Igbos in the SW in great numbers? You guys continue to take the gentleness of the Yorubas for granted.

My mom would say "After the third warning. . . ."

But it's not in our genes. Lets us do our owanbe in peace grin

No one fears the Yoruba. Your numbers have always been too few in the military to make a difference. That is why the North controlled your region during the war.

Only one group has brought Nigeria to its knees and that was the Igbos. That is the same reason why the Northerners are wary of any Igbo who gains too much power.

There was a bark and then there was a bite. The East has never been pacified.

ok we understand your point, what do we nigerians do to appease the Igbo Nation ? Biko tell us

The Northerners are so wary of the Igbos they continue to kill you ppl, politically undermine you people, marginalize you ppl.

What makes you think the Yorubas wants to be feared? Should we be carrying cutlass around?

Truth be told, without the Yorubas in Nigeria, the North would have minced you guys. We're always in the middle, playing the peacemakers.

The North fears no one. . . .the Igbos the least.

The Northerners target your people more than any other group. They know your people do not fight back. Unlike the Igbos and Middle Belters.

Igbos will continued to be feared in the North.

It was only Igbo sons who had the audacity to kill their leaders.

Igbos and other people from the East are the only people in Nigeria that has fought a war against Nigeria.

Lets see if the Yoruba can hold a position for 1 month and then you will be able to speak your mind.

Bros, how do we unite with the igbo nation again or how do we get the forgiveness of the igbo nation again?

I said the North fears no one, did I not? And I also implied that the Yorubas are not out to be feared. It's not in us to kill for the effect of fear. The days of colony and empires are over.

Nobody fears anybody in Nigeria. The Igbos dare not make Yorubas their prey because they have much to lose. And the Yorubas are not the kind that would kill because of ethnicity or religion.

Keep typing fear on NL, you never learn. You dont know who is reading. Keep putting your ppl;s life in jeopardy.

The North will continue to show you how much they "fear" you grin

You killed the paramount leaders and they retaliated by killing you in millions. Is that fear?

Do you want to try the same tactic again? I'm sure Tinubu will play Awolowo this time around  grin

Even with the killing in Jos and other Northern states, Igbo no fit try the same ish they did to start the civil war. They just gently packed their mat and left the Northern states. Talk about being feared.

Better to live one day as a lion than a hundred years as a lamb.

I am proud of all the Biafrans who died fighting for their freedom. There is no shame in that.

They will always be remembered by their people for their bravery in the face of such odds.

Everyone knows that the January coup was bad but it is also pertinent to look at some of the actions taken by Ironsi after coming to power forcefully and suspending the Nigerian consitution.

1. Appointments

Chief of Staff (Supreme Headquarters) – Ogundipe (West)
Chief of Army (Staff) – Gowon (North)
Chief of Staff (NAF),Lt. Col.George Kurubo (East, non-Igbo)
Commanding Officer, 2 Bde, Lt. Col. H. Njoku (East, Igbo)
Commanding Officer, 2 Bn, Major H. Igboba (Midwest, Igbo)
Commanding Officer, Abeokuta Garrison, Major G. Okonweze (Midwest, Igbo)
Commanding Officer, 4 Bn, Major Nzefili (Midwest, Igbo) -Rejected by Northern troops and replaced by Joe Akahan
Commanding Officer, Federal Guards, Major Ochei (Midwest, Igbo)
Commanding Officer, 1 Bn, Major D. Ogunewe (East, Igbo)
Commanding Officer, 1 Bde, Lt. ColW. Bassey (East, non-Igbo)
Commanding Officer, 3 Bn, Major Okoro (East, Igbo)
Commanding Officer, Depot, Major F. Akagha (East, Igbo)
Commanding Officer, 5 Bn,Major M. Shuwa (North)

2. After the Police completed its interrogation, the January coup suspects were transported to different prisons in the South but mainly in the East

3. A court-martial panel was nominated, headed by Lt. Colonel Conrad Nwawo (Nzeogwu’s friend and the man responsible for negotiating Nzeogwu’s surrender). Yet every time this panel was to sit, directives came from Supreme headquarters to postpone

4. The deaths of the victims in January, apart from Balewa, were not announced until after Ironsi was overthrown, leaving room for rumours and innuendos.

5. Ironsi’s advisory team comprised Francis Nwokedi, Pius Okigbo, and Lt. Colonel Patrick Anwunah

6. Ironsi made Nwokedi the sole commissioner forthe establishment of an administrative machinery for a unified Nigeria

7. Ironsi abolished the compulsory Hausa test for civil service positions in the North, meaning that non-Hausa speaking people could take positions in the North.

8. Ironsi promulgated decree 34 which divided Nigeria into 35 provinces and made all civil servants part of a unified civil service despite being advised not to do so by Katsina, Gowon, Bassey, and Kam Salem. The day after the promulgation of decree 34, Lt. Col.Ojukwu publicly announced in Enugu that on the basis of seniority, Igbo civil servants would be transferred to other regions and Lagos.

9. The Drummermagazine June publication contained two provocative articles; “Why Nigeria Exploded” by Nelson Ottah which allegedly derided northern leaders, and “Sir Ahmadu rose in his shrouds and spoke from the dead” by Coz Idapo, which allegedly featured a cartoon in which the reverred late Premier was asking for forgiveness from Idapo. These articles were blamed for the May 1966 riot in some Northern cities which led to approximately 600 Igbo deaths

10. Offensive photographs showing Major Nzeogwu standing on the late Sardauna of Sokoto were said to be distributed in the open including market places. Some Igbos were even alleged to have worn stickers to that effect and were eager, in conversations with northerners, to point to Nzeogwu saying ‘Shi ne maganin ku”, meaning “he is the one who can knock sense into you”.Grammophone records with machine gun sounds were released, to remind Northerners, it is said, of the bullets that felled their leaders in January. If this wasn’t true, why did General Ironsi issue orders that anyone displaying provocative pictures or singing offensive songs would be arrested for incitement and would face 3 months imprisonment or 50 pounds fine or both (Decree 40)?

11. An Army company was deployed to Sokoto as a permanent garrison allegedly under an Igbo Major.

12. Shehu Shagari was detained and questioned for three days in Lagos about questions over NPC funds. The houses of other NPC chieftains were also searched.

13. Eleven (11) Majors were promoted substantive Lt. Cols while fourteen (14) Majors were made temporary Lt. Cols.Of these, 19 were Igbo or Igbo speaking easterners and midwesterners, 5 northerners (Katsina, Akahan, Shuwa, Muhammed, Haruna) and one Yoruba (Olutoye). These promotions happened even though there was a moratorium on promotions in the military.

14. In his biography titled“Power with Civility” by Oleka and Ofondu (Neskon 1998), Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, an Igbo easterner who later fought in the Biafran Navy, states:“That Igbos, including soldiers in the barracks, teased their Northern counterparts about what they regarded as swapping of fortune, served to fray tempers. It was not long before Northerners vented their spleen on their Igbo guests. An orgy of killing of Igbos throughout all nooks and crannies of the Northern Region kicked off.”In his book, “Revolution in Nigeria, Another View” late General Garba describes how his soldiers in the Federal Guard broke down in tears in Jankara market in Lagos when they heard the album “Machine Gun” .General Danjuma (rtd) says even the wives of Igbo soldiers were taunting the wives of Northern soldiers.

15. In an interview back in the early eighties with Radio Kaduna, then Brigadier (later Major General) Mamman Vatsa, now deceased, is quoted by Elaigwu as saying:
“The July coup was motivated by the actions in January 1966 whereby an illegal action was legitimized. If you do that, you expect a counter reaction. July 29, 1966 was a reaction to an inaction against an illegal action….Right from the beginning, the GOC, Nigerian Army regarded these people as ‘rebels’.If that was accepted, the immediate thing was to take the necessary action to get them disciplined legally. If this was not done, then the GOC was condoning indiscipline or treason.Rather than punish men from his army who were on mutiny, he was now asking the civilian government to hand over to him before he could maintain discipline in an organization of which he was in charge….In the first instance, he shouldn’t even have taken over the power……”

Who did the fighting? It was not the Yoruba. It was Northern soldiers who were located in your land.

As others have mentioned before, Yoruba soldiers in the military were very few to do anything, but just watch the Igbos and Hausa fight for power.

And there is no justice until the blood of innocence that was spilled during the pogroms and the war is recognized.

We Igbos will never forget the mass starvation of women and children.

Dede1:

Nigerians are funny and reckless with information especially when it sustains their skewed views. Cowardice is inherent and inert involuntary actions. I have seen a person who fought in Burma and commanded a division during the war of attrition still exhibit acts of cowardice.

The behavior exhibited by Brig. Babafemi Ogundipe during the early hours of July 29, 1966 coup is cowardice. He did not only abandon his position as 2ic to C-in-C, he fled to NSS Nigeria, frigate commanded by Commander Nelson Soroh, and refused to step out of frigate until he sailed to London aboard another ship.

I can not recall Nigerian army contingent in Congo at the strength of brigade level. Ironsi was only Nigerian and African to command UN forces in Congo more than brigade strength.  Ogundipe replaced Ironsi as commander of Nigerian contingent in Congo shortly after Ironsi was penciled as the overall commander of UN forces in Congo.

You are the funny individual. Ogundipe can never be classed as a coward by any sane man. Not only was Ogundipe in Burma but he was also in the Congo in two conflicts that he weren't his. The July coup started late on July 28 and concluded with Gowon being sworn-in late on the 30th of July. Whereever Ogundipe went after Gowon was sworn in is irrelevant. The facts remain that Ogundipe stayed at Army headquarters for two days trying to quell a fight between the North and the East. In that time, he was surrounded mainly by Northern officers who could have stabbed or shot him. Yet he maintained his compusure. That is the behaviour expected of an officer.

On the other hand, while Igbo officers and soldiers were being murdered by Northerners, what were the Igbo soldiers doing? We know that not all Igbo soldiers were killed. Why did they not offer assistance to Ogundipe? Why did Ojukwu flee from Enugu when there were soldiers and ammunitions at Enugu? You go off accusing others of cowardice when there are examples of outright cowardice on the part of Igbo soldiers during the events of July 28-30. Or do you class as bravery, the murder of men and women in their sleep? We know of one Igbo officer (Osuma) who fled to the East after being given a task during the July coup.

LOL. This topic is the point of division in Nigeria. There is irreconcilable difference on it. That is why LESS AND LESS Igbo intellectuals are wasting their time on them. LOL. Only revisionists are eager to keep talking about it with the hope that they can justify the murder of 50,000 civilians, and the starving to death of over 2 million more civilians. Real sons and daughters of Igboland have since chiseled in the lesson of 1966 where it can never be forgiven or forgotten.  cool

Going through threads of this nature apprises me of the fact that the bravery of the igbo tribe really predates the colonial epoch. If igbos were to be a dinstict entity, the colonial mission of the honkies wouldn't have come to fruition in their country.
During the invasion of nigeria by whites, facts had it that they met strong resistance from the aro dynasty. When they(honkies) succeded in taking over nigeria, igbos were the only tribe annihilate their indirect rule mission, in the face of strong military hectoring.
During the nationalistic days, when other tribe were taking the conservative measures, igbos came up with militant nationalism which led to the formation of zikist movement.
When the independence came, the brave soldiers, mainly of igbo tribe, found it necessary to impugn the prevalent corruption in the system, in order, to make the country a worthy place of living. But, some animal from the north miscontrued their mission for ethnocentrism. And this led to the massacre of innocuos citizens that were going about their business with a clear mind. The igbos without minding many odds against them, decided to swallow their blood before pride. This belief among the igbos culminated to a civil, in which they were doing great, before the white came to the rescue of the larger nigeria.

Biafra is the heartbeat of most igbos,i enjoyed onlytruth's post a lot,we should never forget the blood we shed in biafra, the biafra story must be told in every igbo home, lest the new generation be deceived by the history revisionist or or stupid "one nigeria" jargon, never again should the fate of ndiigbo be placed in the hand of a man like aguiyi ironsi.

On the political scene, the bravery of the igbos has brought them out as pacesetters. For instance, the recurrent decimal in nigeria's political milieu recently is SNG, and this SNG was first propagated in nigeria's political lexicon by a brave igboman, in the name of " DIM ODIMEGWU OJUKWU". This was the main issued that was discussed in abur, but, it's quite hapless and pathetic that as at the time the oxford trained pundit was preaching this, some folks out of mere recreancy took as a mutineer. Today, all this people are going back to eat from their vomit in the name of SNG.
Igbos went ahead in rewritting the political history of nigeria, by being the first group of people to oust a sitting governor through the law courts. Today, people are believing in the reality of resorting to legal process, whenever, u feel that u're superfluously denied ur mandate.
The igbos went ahead to demystify the secret behind the northern hegemony, that's why the fought tooth and neck to see that a minority was made to taste from the cup of the number one citizen of the country.

Healing!

Some ppl have said dissolving the nation will erase it but I say no. Dissolution prevent a repeat of the root cause of the war but it doesn't take away the memories of the losses which could act as catalyst for another war in future between the neighboring new sovereignties.

There is psychological pain and healing is a best way to treat the anger and resentment.

^ +100  If my people will only forgive their grandparents and learn to live and let live, we'd be the greatest nation in Africa and could become one of the greatest nations on earth in a few short years.

This dissolution affair would cost us millions of lives, even if it were done amicably. Its probably high time that we got invaded by a foreign force - a condition which would make us unite as a nation. The only time Nigerians are united is when a football match is on and Nigeria is one of the teams playing.

It is quite unfortunate that Gaddafi has been rendered impotent  by the powers that be. I was actually hoping that the fool will start a war with us, forcing us to unite as one. Nigeria will be great again and Insha Allah, all those forces working towards the dissolution of this great country will fail.

My people do not wish to wait any longer. We want our own sovereign nation where we will not be dictated by those in Abuja.

The Nigerian experiment has failed.

_chucks,

I see the validity of your point for unity. In a case of willing states coming together to form union which later went sour, yes a conciliatory path exist.

The keyword is "willing".

We are unwilling states, the spirit does not subscribe to it even though we regimentally participate in it. The spirits need to be freed.

As I travel from North to the East, East to South and West, I have not run into Nigerians who are not willing to remain in the union, or who are passionately fighting for the dissolution of this country. I'm afraid those of you clamouring for this dissolution are in the minority and for the most part do not reside in Nigeria. many of you are conveniently tucked away overseas where, when the s.hit hits the fan, your contributions will be in the form of moral support.

In the maintime those of us with vested interest here have it all to lose including lives. You people better think twice about what your willingness is all about.

Most of the Yoruba leaders, Igbo leaders, and leaders from other parts of the country do not share your passion for the dissolution of this country. These leaders control the money, the millitary, and all the resources necessary to maintain the status quo. While the status quo is unacceptable, as a practical matter, dissolution has the same chance of happening, as having the great Ojukwu returning to lead Biafra in another war, or having Gowon become the head of state of Nigeria in 2015.

You people are dreamers and will remain dreamers. While you are here wishing for dissolution, the New Nigeria is slowly emerging. A nigeria with great economic strenghth - you are all well advised to put your energies into building this new nation or you'll find yourselves on social security checks, while your mates will be ruling Nigeria.

Who are these "my people" you are talking about. They are non existent and only real in your dreams. I have quite a few business partners from your very own village who would rather die protecting their business interests and family than for some non existing idealistic Biafra.

As a practical matter, how do you wish to cause this dissolution? Wishing it would happen is not good enough, please tell us how you plan to get rid of a majority of your own people who are not ready for the senseless idea. How are you going to wrestle power away from government?

I would think I know how MY PEOPLE, which is the Ndigbo think. Unlike you who is a stranger in a foreign land. Who cares if you have business partners from my town? Dissolution does not mean they should not lose that they will stop having their businesses. Do you think Dangote would stop selling his products in nations that may arise in the South?

The majority of the Igbo do not believe in Nigeria. That is a fact. You cannot deny it if you want, but the Igbo people and many other groups have had enough with a backwards North that does not value education.

Do not comment on a people you do not know anything about. I do not care if you can speak our tongue. You do not speak for us, because you are not nwa afo Igbo.

And it is only YOUR people, the Northerners who kill people for the slightest offenses. Who wants to be in a nation with your people, when you all drag a nation down?

Chucks, cowards die many times before their death. And it's only a barmy person that'll continue threading on the path that has flunked him many thmes. One of things steal keeping nigeria intact, is that the people that have the zeal lacks the knowledge, and the ones the ones that have the knowledge are fettle by the shackles of egocentrism. If u doubt my notion, go to any news stand in igboland; take note of their anger towards this useless entity called nigeria, then come back here and relay ur experience.

@EzeUche and kasiem, please tell us how you plan to cause this dissolution given that a vast majority of your leaders are either opposed to it or are too afraid to be thrown in jail where they belong, if they talk about dissolution with any amount of seriousness. Are you people training an army and gathering sophisticated weapons for this cause of yours?

Thinking about dissolution will never make it happen with action, what specific actions do you have in mind. i'm tempted to call you people impotent internet warriors. You don't have any great leader that even comes close to the great Ojukwu to lead you - we all know the outcome of Ojukwu's leadership.  For the sake of your children and grand children, join hands with others and build this country. i know you are a lost cause already. Do it for baby Ijioma, baby Okechukwu, and other innocent ones coming behind you.

And kasiem, don't give me that crap about cowards dying many times before their time, olodo. you only die once. That is probably one of your dumb African proverbs, like "Everything that goes up must come back down to earth".
