In the days after this shooting, the Nigerian military posted a video of Donald Trump implied that American troops at the Mexico border should use gunfire to respond to migrants who protest by throwing rocks. That drew international attention to what happened in Abuja.

We worked with researchers at Storyful to see what footage was posted to social media from Abuja. We quickly discovered shocking scenes. It was clear the military overreacted and fired at people as they retreated, but the scenes were chaotic and it was difficult to understand what exactly happened.

We contacted sources in Abuja who sent us more footage. We were able to verify a large number of casualties from the shooting, far more than the Nigerian military admitted. So we dispatched our freelance reporter Emmanuel Akinwotu to Abuja over several days. He met survivors in hospitals, talked to witnesses and collected a trove of video evidence from their cellphones. Much of it had not been seen before.

In New York, we reconstructed what happened step-by-step, putting order to the chaos. We geo-located the site where the shooting happened – a military checkpoint outside Abuja. My colleague Christoph Koettl, a geo-spatial analyst, examined old satellite footage to see where the roadblock is usually set up — on a side road which is parallel to the highway. Emmanuel went to the scene and confirmed through local sources that traffic usually flows freely through here, as it was on the day of the march (the military said the marchers blocked traffic, but in fact the military did, when they slid their roadblock across the highway).

Christoph researched the military from logos and insignia in the footage, he identified the battalion involved in the shooting – the Guards Brigade, an elite unit that has a short chain of command to President Buhari. He also identified some of the weapons they used, including a heavy 50 caliber machine gun we could see and hear in the footage. It blew limbs off some people.

We talked to former U.S. Marines on staff, including our weapons expert John Ismay, about this and other machine guns we saw in the footage. Dionne Searcey, our West Africa Bureau Chief reported out other aspects of the declining security situation in Nigeria, and the history of impunity among the Nigerian military that allows events like this to go unpunished.

Christoph also retrieved old satellite imagery of a mass grave from a 2015 incident – he had reported on that incident for Amnesty International, where he worked at the time. Emmanuel interviewed military spokesman John Agim about our findings. He insisted that the checkpoint was attacked, the marchers intended to occupy Abuja and they had to be stopped. But what the Nigerian military did in this instance – to police unarmed protesters with live gunfire when there was no risk to life – is illegal under international law.

I wonder why people were so blind to these extra judicial killings by Nigerian army under Bubu?

Were we waiting for foreign media and foreigners to tell us before we realize that people are been massacred by this terrorist army?

It's not just the shittes, Nigerian army had killed many innocent souls in the past three years.
I had known it was an intentional act to clamp down and wipe out the sect from day one.

These are my posts in 2015.

bishop4life:

I wonder why it's so hard for us to see something fishy in all this? Why can't somebody smell propaganda?

For Christ sake did they attack the army or were they attacked by the army?

Where are the apc they used to attack the army?

Where are the weapons discovered in their possession?

Where are the injured and dead Nigerian soldiers during the said clash?

Clue :
1. There was no clash.
2. There was an invasion.
3. There was no or little retaliation. (if not did you see
even a stone lying around? just dead and wounded
Civilians)
4. The military is lying on the issue of assassination.
Or do you believe even a junior arm corporal will
be attacked with no weapon talk less of
assassination?

Point: SAY NO TO PROPAGANDA

Now this is AUTOCRACY IN DEMOCRACY !!!

And to even call this a clash is injustice. I mean how can a rat clash with a lion?

This is "MASSACRE"!!!

If at all united nation should watch and this go on, how dare they talk human right?

I refuse to accept Nigeria is a country.

Which sentiment? I am not even a Muslim, neither am i a northerner. I am not a politician, so how can i be an opposition?

Was I looking for sentiment when I made those comments in 2015 and 2016?

Please the next time you gonna qoute me try not to bring ln your sentiments cos what i know about mad people is that they will first call you mad!

The criminality of the Nigerian military is endemic.

The degradation of the psyche of Nigerians during the military era has created a train of souless deviants who covet power with the voracity of wolves, just to oppress other citizens.

In Nigeria, when the oppressed gains power, he becomes an oppressor. The vicious cycle.

Watch this trending video, reconcile it with the atrocities of the Nigerian military against civilians, then ask yourself why you should shed a tear when they are duly killed- https://mobile.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10155700111466022&id=617956021&fgwum=015d0638d7fa6442f427b4b5ee34c0d9855949fd4115b7559c25dfab1f73023d236

.......the checkpoint was attacked, the marchers intended to occupy Abuja and they had to be stopped. But what the Nigerian military did in this instance was not right.

We will definitely get to the root of this and anyone found guilty shall face the full.course of the law.

As usual.

And our people fall for this without thinking.

In my own opinion, the government needs to get the Armed Forces a rubber bullet, stun gun etc for cases like this.

Human lives are precious. Nonetheless, this is suicide by the army.
In a country where lives don't matter, a protest like such will lead to the deaths of the innocent.

How dare you take along women and children in cases like this? Knowing fully well the kind of forces we have here won't wait to defend!

How many Shiite Muslims can lead such a massive protest and head to the White House without getting a fire back?

It's high time we stopped being hypocritical.

If the PMB administration didn't tame this Shiite sect, most of those crying foul now will be the one shouting that the President is permitting Islamic terrorists to grow in Nigeria
.

The whites you look up to have caused far greater devastations than this ... Now we make them look like saints angry angry

cry

Evil that an outsider had to investigate and show insiders.

The video clearly shows in broad day light soldier mercenaries killing unarmed people with weapons used for war. Beyond barbaric. So, so, so evil.

May those soldiers and their commanders who killed unarmed civilians receive the judgement of God.

Trump must suspend the sale of fighter jets and enforce an arms embargo on the Nigerian army, until a judicial panel of enquiry is set up and chaired by an independent body (not the Nigerian Army) tried and prosecuted the defaulting soldiers and their supervisors.
You don't shoot citizens with a 50 cal and go Scott free.

I trust the New York times have a healthy relationship with POTUS unlike the CNN,so a complete blacklist should be the minimum expectation.

The Nigerian army scored a major own goal with their attack on "bloody civilians".

Atiku’s foreign employee is working...

Just as Buhari employed a foreigner to finish Jonathan’s image in 2015.

Atiku’s guy is pounding Buhari repeatedly. He blew the clone story internationally to make Buhari’s livid supported secondguess their loyalty.

Now he’s here again.

The report shows how government’s inaction fuels impunity, resulting in attacks and reprisals, with at least 3,641 people killed between January 2016 and October 2018; 57 per cent of them in 2018 alone.

“Beyond issuing statements condemning attacks after they happen, not enough is being done by the federal and state governments to rein in attackers and bring those reasonably suspected of involvement in crimes to justice.

“Several victims told AI that they recognised some of their attackers. Communities have also sent reports to authorities and in some cases provided information about attacks. But in many cases, no arrests were made. Some local and state officials have also confirmed this failure to AI.”

It added, “Our research showed that these attacks were well planned and coordinated, with the use of weapons like machine guns and AK-47 rifles. Yet, little has been done by the authorities in terms of prevention, arrests and prosecutions, even when information about the suspected perpetrators was available.

“The failure of the government has also been in the area of compensation and resettlement of displaced people. In addition to the loss of lives, the Federal Government reckons that the farmers/herders clashes cost the country N5tn. In May 2018, the Federal Government released the sum of N10bn for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of villages affected by the crisis. It is not clear how the funds will be disbursed and which communities will benefit.”

It said, “The AI research reveals a disturbing pattern of failure on the part of security forces to protect people from vicious and mostly deadly attacks by armed groups. Eyewitnesses, victims, local officials and others independently interviewed have recounted several incidents where police and soldiers have either ignored credible warnings of impending attacks or abandoned people during or just before deadly attacks by heavily armed groups, suspected to be members of herder or farmer communities.”

I hope, one day Nigerians will appreciate the effort of the Nigerian Army in keeping us safe. Propagandists who want to bring the Nig Army to it knees will abandon you when you need them most someday.

Yes, there are bad eggs just like we have on our street. They have their challenges which I trust are surmountable. Let shun playing politics with the sacrifices the men and women of the Nig Army are making to keep us safe. They need our support.

Foreign and local propagandists will fail eventually.

God bless the Nig Army

Long live Nigeria
