sonyvaio: Let me get something straight. Did the supposed law actually prescribe flogging as the punitive measure for its infringement? Unbelievable! |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by oluite(f): 12:28pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
I hope we get it right someday.Flogging is not going to stop those children from hawking, most of them don't have any guardian and survive on their own.For the few that have parent and guardians, the parents don't seem to see anything wrong in it.They are so poor and uneducated. Its shocking to hear them say govt is troubling their source of livehood! These children will just look for other ways to outsmart the government. Is it too much to award scholarship to these children?or get them engage in some handiwork? |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by Donmeca(m): 12:42pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
what sort of punishment is that? I think the punishment for the minors should be given to their parents/guardians who send them out with the strict instruction never to bother coming back unless the goods are exhausted. when they come home with little sales, these kids are beaten black and blue and may not even be allowed to taste water(let alone food) in the house. these kids wake up with the firm resolve to complete the day's task with efficiency, they can even enter the lion's den to make sales. What do we expect the children to do? call their people's bluff? No way! Someone would say, "go to school of course." It may interest u to know that most if not all of these kids are not in any form of school. The only education they may have got being to recite their goods, count money and make change. The owners of those goods should be arrested and jailed/fined. |

Since we cannot have a dog with a license, maybe we should require would-be parents to show proof of eligibility and sanity before having kids. Way tooo mannny kidss in Naija. |

Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by OKURINMETA: 1:55pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
excuse me who wants to hawk if the basic amenities are given?. i advocate that they should not be flogged cos if they do it will be abuse of power by the court and abuse on the hawkers, as long as the basic amenities are not given Abj is not exempted from the hawking scheme. and can some one tell me why people who are struggling to survive by hawking will have to pay 3k/ is this not sending them back to the street through manipulation? this is not fair soemthing must be done |

avwerosuoo: Who is d govt that u want flogged? Reference: shotuns: Just to clear the air, did it occur to u that these kids could just give fake names, that could sure be a smart move, |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by marvix(m): 2:21pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
But y is everyone voting no, should we no more enforce discipline or maybe the judge should have ordered that they should be fed and paid the value of what they had in the tray. Justice is a blind ass, he does not care who its dealing with that the way its supposed to be, can you imagine ordering that the kids should be put in school at govt expense by the next day what would we see on the street, would we be solving the problem or escalating it? |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by andyprez(m): 3:05pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
It makes me laugh (the irritating kind) when I read stuffs like this. So the procecuters believe that the minors go to the market and purchase their goods for themselves. Common sense won't let this dumb people know that they (the children) are sent by their parent & that they have no other option than to obey them (parent/guardian). Oh!, I've forgotten that common sense ain't that common. |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by basking4me: 3:28pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
In the UK, there are records of birth and even payments are made to citizens for their upkeep until they get a job, cant remember the name its called. Here in Nigeria, the Government of this country has failed woefully, no records of anybody, no planning and no provisions for upkeep of kids whose parents aint working. The government of this country by nature does not care for its people. We dont love ourselves and our leaders dont give a fork about you. The gap between the poor guy and the rich dude is like from Heaven to Hell! We'll have to save ourselves, no one is going to do it for us, |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by basking4me: 3:37pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
Come to think of it, is there any policy for kids or child care running in this country, ? if a dude can steal billions and go to jail for six months, and a kid out of need to survive goes to child labour (working to survive)n and still gets weeped for it, I can only imagine, that Judge has nothing in his head, am sure, he may be on drugs or is mentally ill, should need to see a shrink(psychologist)! (Note: it is not everyone you see on the street that talks fine or looks okay is actually okay, this judge is just one of them, ) |

Mai Suya: That's why we have judges who use their discretion, while beign guided by the law. the constitution doesn' outlaw floggin. I am not in support of the judgement though |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by olakintanj(m): 4:04pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
Do you think beating or flogging is the best solution to get out of this mess? I think flogging is child abuse and as a strong advocate against child abuse, i think this is not a good idea |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by olakintanj(m): 4:08pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
If we keep flogging this Children who are hawking, so what shall we do to our leaders who are stealling our money, do we shot them or flogg them as well. If our leaders allow this money to circulate, no body will be on street hawking any kinds of items, and Nigeria would have been a better place for all. |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by Nobody: 4:09pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
The children hawkers were not punished for HWA [Hawking While Underaged], they were spanked for hawkng at the wrong spots. Nigeria and it's priorities. They don't care that the children where minors. . . . and unschooled. |

Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by komekn(m): 4:22pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
I am somewhat lost, can somebody tell what act of law this is? bye law, sharia whatever and let’s not just assume there is a law, because the supposedly learned Magistrate said so, stranger things have happened in Nigeria. Finally does this not fringe on the right of the minor/child, I am not that familiar with our all our federal laws which take precedence over state laws, but i am sure the fundamental rights of the child are enshrined in our constitution, and in this case completely breached by the state. Furthermore we are signatories to the United Nations “Convention on the Rights of the Child” Then again it’s the same city a former governor and senator (yerima) married a 13 year old child, and what happened to the paedophile |

Whats wrong with flogging them. Are they not being flogged in school daily ? Will it kill them ? Are kids not being flooged at home by parents. So many useless people on nairaland. Havent you been flogged b4, did you die ? Its a form of discouragements. lol nigerians are desensitized to suffering |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by elderk: 8:47pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
Everyman will do anything possible for survival. have you guys ever gone to where these guys live? i mean they even have to travel to their hawk sites. this should not surprise you, but they feed on what they hawk DAILY. flogging them will never deter or solve the problems. you may blame their parents but what can a man who earns btwn 8-10k monthly do? he will tell you he helped his parents with farm work while growing up and this (hawking) is presently his farm so why cant his kids give him a hand on his farm. the problem runs deeper and the solution even deeper |

Has corporal punishment been outlawed in Nigeria? If not why all the noise. I am against corporal punishment though and if they are underage (<12) then they should not be flogged instead their wares should be seized. |
Re: Minors Flogged For Hawking In Abuja by freecocoa(f): 11:24pm On Oct 22, 2010 |
Am actually sheding tears at this, expecially at what most people here are saying, how can someone say its okay to flog the kids or even the parents,do you think anyone likes suffering?they are just trying to survive and they get sentenced and flogged for it.if some of you dont know, some people are really finding it difficult to feed in this country and instead of the govt to help they making it worse.God will surely flog them back.NONESENSE |
