Shebi dem say there is no subsidy that GEJ was fibbing? Is APC govt paying subsidy? On cray fish, bread on petrol? grin cheesy

If they want to start paying stipend, expect around 5 million people to come from Chad, Niger and other countries through wide open Northern borders into Nigeria. After govt officials chop their share, it will be billions of dollars spent on it yearly. With very few genuine Southern Nigerian jobless youth getting anything.
Oga it would be for only graduates simple

I would argue that graduates were already subsidized for many years to prepare them for jobs/innovation. Especially public university graduates that paid peanuts as school fees.

Instead NYSC should be scrapped and a voluntary entrepreneurship year (EY) introduced. We need no more remnant of militarism. EY can be in agric, IT, business, aviation management, manufacturing, engineering, etc. Then govt can fund start-ups for the best ideas of EY finishers while others will have better chances of also creating own jobs or find employment.

People most at risk of serious poverty, becoming religious extremists and risk to society are mostly not graduates. Graduates should not be relying on handouts but pushed/encouraged to be more productive and even create jobs.

In developed countries, the neediest get priority in order to preserve social harmony.

Welfare dulls the mind. It annihilates necessity which is the mother of invention. If in doubt, take a closer look at Niger Delta and how they are faring with amnesty stipends. It created a generation of alcoholics, touts, gamblers and losers.

FG should create enabling environment for businesses to thrive. The only viable solution to unemployment is employment. People need to earn their way through life.

First ,they will give the project /contract to their party loyalist, family member or friend to execute as a way to share the national cake ,the said person will budget billions, give to 10 real jobless people then 200 of their friend's children and relatives who are likely studying or working abroad. The rest money will go to voice mail.

These bunch of dunderheads who have no brilliant ideas in their corrupt brains. Mteeeeeeeew

All this socialist policy can't work

Remove subsidy , use the money give 5 million naira loan to all graduate after NYSC degree and NYSC certificate as bond

NYSC should introduce a 12 months skill trainings for graduates instead of stupid CDS ..

Training on producing goods n services " we can export or replacing the ones we import " ...

This is key ....do this and our GDP growth would be amazing in 10 years ...70% might fail ...but the impact of that 30% that succeed would employ the ones who failed
This right here is the comment of the day

So my dear na so we go just dey? We have just accepted that nothing will work?

Wait o, why are our refineries not working? Or why have we not built a new one so we can stop import fuel?

I guess for same reason. Corruption of subsidy money.

It's terrible situation.
Just sad that a beautiful and blessed country like Nigeria cannot get its acts together. The whole world is watching with dismay.

my brother, what would you have me do? Who dey cry dey see road o,but what do we do?

Fela said "if you die,you go die for nothing" because he saw it all.

There are too many saboteurs in the system, they don't mind setting the country ablaze just to fill their pockets ,the rot is too deep that even the people save for a few have become part of the rot.The fish started rotting at the head but that rot has spread to the body, go to government agencies,go to private sector ,go to the markets its all there. The rot stares at you in the face.

So all i can do is ask ,"brethren, what shall we do?".

let's each senator slash his or salary by 50%, and use the 50% to empower the unemployed youth in his or her locality . Each senator can employ more than 100 jobless youth multiplied by the upper chamber and the lower chamber.

I'm not in support of this.

They must be engaged in some kind of work even if it 2 hours a week planting rice or coupling bicycles.

There should be nothing like free money for able-bodied persons.

I don't agreed with you, you talk the way you do because you have something doing or you are ignorant to moster called unemployment,
you don't know that many youth are stealing just to eat, some can not afford to buy a panadol for just 20 naira and you are saying you are not in support of the stipend?
thank God for your life. you think is that easy, because it easy for you right?
you have no idea with many youth are passing through. The money is to help them for the little expense they can't afford, things are extremely bad in this country.
I support the stipend idea it will go a long way to help many.

I agree with your argument giving handouts but provide an enabling environment for people to create jobs. However, granting 5 million naira loans to Corps members may be a challenge. They currently exists a foundation that handles that: The NYSC Foundation @ https://nyscfoundation.org.ng. It is a non-profit registered with the CAC that grants loans to corps member to start businesses.

Its a good move but it can't work in Nigeria at this moment. Common NPower program, those who are employed still enrol for am. Some people no even dey go again since they don do documentation, alert dey enter steady steady every month for money they didn't worked for and they still dey collect salary from their place of work.
If they try this kind of thing ehn, na 95% of Nigerians go come out say dem no get job oo

How do they determine who is jobless and who isn't jobless ? And what mechanisms would they put in place to ensure that the money gets to those who are jobless and really need the money ?

As the 79 Nigerians that were arrested in America did this year abi?

Is that the reason countless others are doing 419 in UK or Malaysia?

Nigerians are yet to be research oriented.

The Nigerian youth invest their time in BBN or armchair politics

Forget this talk of infrastructure or lack thereof.

A society that wants to succeed overlooks it's own flaws and soldiers on in focus.

India never had any of these things in place but they were designed to succeed and they have.

All you've mentioned boils down to orientation which can also mean education. Mind you, education does not only mean university degree. How many technical school do we have that trains mechaniics, tailors, plumbers, carpenters etc. When people are properly educated, they become equipped and can more easily fend for themselves.

Do you have idea how much India is investing in education and healthcare. They may still be far from the west but not to be compared with Nigeria in any way.

If our people gets those basic things, they will have sense of belonging and once that happens, they will not be running helter skelter all over the world seeking greener pastures - at least it would reduce drastically.

Do you think it is a lack of technical schools that hinders our growth?

I daresay, we have technical schools in close proximity to most Nigerians but years of snubbing technical knowledge, believing it is beneath us is the reason it doesn't fly.

Nobody is saying infrastructure or even structure is unimportant but I'm certain the problem goes beyond that.

Same reason why you would find a graduate from Umudike making waves at MIT.

It is the fight in the dog and not the dog in the fight that matters.

Good. What I'm saying in essence is that Nigerians should be made to have sense of belonging and hope again - those amenities will go a long way than the rubbish stipend they are planning.

Nigeria may have a number of problems but the major one is how much juicy political positions are. Take away most of those excesses in terms of salaries/benefits/allowances and then properly punish corrupt offenders with capital punishment and see things change rapidly.

Aside: I don't t think a senator/minister should earn more than 500k/month. A president maybe 1m. Take away foreign medicals & education for them and their families. Cut off those rubbish allowances and benefits and watch how how only serious-minded people will seek political positions. But how can all these be possible without some form of revolution.
