No way. The people's general will not interfere in family affairs. It's a PDP extended family issue. Go and meet your PDP presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Yar'Adua and Goatluck Jonathan to help you resolve or retrieve it.

Even the US combined with Russian and China cannot take a 10 metres square of Nigeria's land from Buhari without blood flowing on either side. The useless PDP presidents gave out Bakassi without shooting a bullet.

U mean buhari the coward?

Re Bakasi.

If there was a mistake, it was made by the Abacha administration's decison to go to the ICJ when the fact was that our case for retaining Bakassi was poor to begin with (see my previous post upthread).

What we should have done was held onto the Bakassi, while arguing for a second referendum/plebiscite..under UN auspices. (A longshot, with all sorts of possible consequences, but might have worked.)

Bakassi Peninsula was sold by General Yakubu Gowon to Cameroon in 1968. Yes, Yakubu Gowon in August 1968, had been requested by Ahmadu Ahidjo, the then President of Cameroon to sell part of Nigeria, especially the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon as the condition for supporting Nigeria to win the civil war against Biafra. Recall that before then, Bakassi was used as the outlet to the Atlantic to bring in food to the Easterners. The then Finance Minister, the very Obafemi Awolowo had asked Gowon: how long do you continue to feed your enemies?

Rattled by the question, Gowon, Murtala Mohammed, Olusegun Obasanjo, Martin Adamu, Theophilus Danjuma, Hassan Katsina with the tacit approval of Sultan Mohammed II and Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano swung into action. Gowon wanting to score a point did not even discuss this with the then Supreme Military Counsel, though they quietly approved of it.

He contacted Alhamadu Ahidjo, and the Meeting was scheduled in Marua Town of Southern Cameroon in August 1968, that day Gowon, using stone, standing on Cameroon side “threw a stone” saying that wherever the stone landed should be given to Cameroun, west ward to the Peninsula. The stone landed at the very point of entry of the Peninsula called Reo Del Ree.

Hence, General Yakubu Gowon, on the advice of Obafemi Awolowo, used a stone to sell Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon. Others is history.

Can you back this up with evidence? I will like you to appear in court as a witness.

By diplomacy, NO.
By military, YES.
Nigeria can retrieve Bakasi if we have stronger army. Like Russia did to Crimea.

Ready to go to war against France. if we had enough military strength, we could have occupied the peninsula without the hassles of being dragged to the ICJ. with enough proofs showing that the boundary exists on Cameroon soil, the of Biafra fables becomes an hogwash. Even the NASS could do absolutely nothing with the 10yr grace period provided Nigeria for her defense.

I don't like PDP at all, but Obasanjo, in signing the Green Tree Agreement in 2005 (which to his credit, he signed reluctantly...very reluctantly..indeed some people in government were of the opinion he not sign up at all) was forced by the decision of the Abacha administration to abide by any ICJ ruling given in the matter...in 1994/5.

ICJ ruled against us. We accepted the verdict. Obasanjo did not make the decison to go to court (it happened in 1994, when he, and many other PDP bigwigs were out of power)...but once the agreement was put in place, he had to accept it.

Yes we can, but not in this current climate.

First, any attempt will be considered an act of war against a friendly neighbor.

Second, we will have to have demonstrated millitary might of which we currently lack.

Third, we will have to be ready for 1st world intervention. Who will support us? Not France for sure. Maybe USA under Trump if we could make a case and promise maybe a Trump Resort cool

During the Scramble for Africa, Queen Victoria signed a Treaty of Protection with the King and Chiefs of Akwa Akpa, known to Europeans as Old Calabar on 10 September 1884. This enabled the British Empire to exercise control over the entire territory around Calabar, including Bakassi. The territory subsequently became de facto part of Nigeria, although the border was never permanently delineated. However, documents released by the Cameroonians, in parity with that of the British and Germans, clearly places Bakassi under Cameroonian Territory as a consequence of colonial era Anglo-German agreements. After Southern Cameroons voted in 1961 to leave Nigeria and became a part of Cameroon, Bakassi remained under Calabar administration in Nigeria until ICJ judgement of 2002.

Is there a possibility of revisiting the Bakassi case? All lands are valuable, and that land is a valuable piece of Calabar(Akwacross).
In this day and age where countries like Singapore and the likes are doing all they can to reclaim hectares of land from the ocean and rivers, why should Nigeria so easily forfeit that land to Cameroon? And now that peninsular actually falls under the now secessionist Ambazonia . And in fact,I just discovered there's a Bakassi secessionist movement either from Cameroon or Ambazonia (if successful) . All street and town names on the island are Calabarian names ,plus a few other historical artifacts and events . The judgement surrounding the forfeiture of the land to Cameroon remains sketchy .
Do you think there may be a possibility of ever retrieving Bakassi based on factual and reasonable evidence ? I think it can be retrieved, though It remains to be seen.

Not through any legal means or by international law.

Nigeria and Nigerians should forget about it.

Crimea, techincally speaking, was not part of the Ukraine...it was awarded to what was then the Ukranian Socialist Republic (a constituent nation of the good old Soviet Union) in 1954...by the then leader of the USSR...Nikita Sergeyevich Khruschev (who incidentally was a Ukranian).

Of course back then, since Russia and Ukraine were both part of the USSR...there was no problem with the award. Issues/problems started when the USSR broke up in 1991.

It is too late to take back Bakassi. Obasanjo is a coward who only flaunts his military credentials when he wants to withdraw political support from a sitting Nigerian president who he doesn't like. When Cameroon took over Bakassi, Obasanjo cowardly depopulated the Peninsula and carried Bakassi indigenes to mainland Cross River State where he carved out a new local government area for them from an existing local government. Nigeria was not bound to obey that dubious judgement but Obasanjo who is a CIA asset always longed to please his paymasters.
No sir!
There was really nothing Nigeria/OBJ could have done about Bakasi. It was a well documented trade-off Nigeria (through Gowon) did in the past.

Military wise, Nigeria cannot confront France. Don't forget that France owns all the oil wells of Cameroon.

Legal wise, documents exist that makes us culpable.

No foreign country wi support Nigeria against France

Remembered back days 2008 august to be precise when we stormed bakassi under the command of generals like Ateke Tom, Tompolo, Soboma, Prince Igodo, Franklin and others we sailed thru ikot abasi to oron entered the calabar channels then into the penisular, we laid seige for 3 days pillaging and plundering. the gendarmes fled their bases leaving behind enough equipment and tools which we carted home.. back to the topic, yes if there is any hotheaded leader.

Annexation of Bakassi always pain me. OBJ did not try at all.
International politics is more complex and fill with intrigue than the national one; but then he shld have put up a fight.
One day Calabar will get back that which belong to them.
and as if that wasn't enough they lost 75 oil Wells to Akwa Ibom State.
Honestly Calabar and all the Efik communities should be joined in one state with Akwa Ibom.
I see no reason Efiks are co-joined with Northern Cross River when they have nothing in common
