So what will be a good salary in your opinion, not forgetting the obvious things like housing and car allowance. When you say less than 2m, please break down the figure for me . But the starting a business advice is worth serious consideration , since in this day and age no employment is as secure as they used to be decades ago. Thanks Using US standards 24M/YR=160KUSD, with that type of experience I will say ~1.5M a month is reasonale. I am unsure of how housing and car allowance works in naija. The above figures represents just take home pay. Remember he is in the IT field so there is a "ceiling" on your earnings, in finance its a different ball game, since folks get spoiled with bonuses (pre2008), a typical pay package (investment banking) in the US in 2006 for a 22 year old coming out of college was sign on bonus/relocation-10k base salary- 60k end of year bonus - (60k to 100k) however, this industry is brutal as working 100hour weeks is very common. As you stated earlier, starting your own business is the way to go no matter the "setbacks" |

I've no idea why folks think that because they worked in IT abroad, they need to do the same thing when they relocate to Naija. Why not just use the money you've made and move into something else entirely, as in starting a business? I mean, you could secure an international franchise in a promising sector and bring it into the country where brand name is so appealing. Alternatively you could go it alone and set up a bowling alley, a transport firm, a hotel, a couple of gyms, a nightclub, a restaurant, or even an arcade or casino, and make an awful lot of money. There's a growing demand for top notch services of this sort in Nigeria, and coming from overseas, one can easily infuse something different into the system and make a serious killing. The country is saturated with IT folks roaming about. Think outside the box! My twopence! |

ROSSIKE: If you are building and designing IT or network infrastructure, then there is a high demand for these skills in Nigeria as the current infrastructure is still rudimentary. For example apart from mobile telecommunications, technologies like MPLS, Cloud computing , Utility computing are novel to the Nigerian market and have great potential to lubricate and expand business at far cheaper rates than is currently the case. |
Re: Relocation To Nigeria From The Uk 2011. Am I Mad Or Is It Possible ? by debosky(m): 12:31am On Dec 30, 2010 |
^^ It is precisely for those reasons why you should be looking at offering consultancy services to companies and not seeking a 'senior engineer' position. Working in Nigeria involves compromises one way or the other - the work practices here are not the same as in the UK or US and you will have to adapt. Coming with a messianic mindset will not get you very far. |

ROSSIKE:i like your thinking. bowling alley that will be the hangout spot. i have never understood the mindset of people who leave abroad to work in nigeria myself. if i leave abroad i am not coming home to work for anybody. thats just crazy. i am coming to set something up for myself. |

notcorrupt: I am actually in agreement with that . . . you are better off getting into the consultancy market than seeking employment with any of the existing firms. You are likely better off setting up your own business and offering IT solutions and upgrades to existing companies than getting yourself locked down in some dead-end IT job down then at this point. |

buzugee: Multi billion dollar banks both in Europe and US still have directors earning $120,000 and there about. It is easy to throw numbers about, I would like to however see some evidence of this earning ability somewhere. I definitely did not see it in the pictures or the website for the particular company you posted. Again, that is all I had to go by. |
Re: Relocation To Nigeria From The Uk 2011. Am I Mad Or Is It Possible ? by norrisman: 3:55am On Dec 30, 2010 |
buzugee: I dont know about N48 million, Last I heard was that Jubril was on like N22 million a year but maybe with all the other allowee the guy money fit enter N48 milla. I no fit lie, I dey envy the guy, the dude must be like 33 or younger and he already made director! But what you have to understand is that for every Jubril, there are 10,000 sufferhead. There are people he started with in the call centre that are still on the phones or have resigned in frustration. Like someone said, Senior mangement in Nigeria are paid those high figures by some multinationals in because of the 'Nigerian' factors that have been put into consideration. If you pay a CEO in Nigeria the equivalent of £100,000 which is around the average amount CEOs earn in the UK, the CEO in Nigeria will have a difficult time to maintain a standard of living comensurate with the office he occupies. Think about it, if the man rent house or mortgage house for Ikoyi, thats N10 million out of N25 million per year gone already. |

@kobojunkie Please what exactly is your profile? What skills are you bringing to the table? Which sector do you think you will fit into? Right now I see you just asking generic questions. Take a cue from the OP and give us a brief profile that will enable us give you proper insights. I WILL NOT GO THROUGH THE INCONVENIENCE OF GIV ING DETAILS OF EVRY HIGH-PAYING JOB i KNOW so if you do as requested I might have specifics for you. I'll just say that there are A LOT of people earning about 2 million naira a month in Nigeria, I DO FOR ONE (I work in O&G). On a general note, I see a lot of ignorance on nairaland especially from our kinsmen in diaspora. You can have a very good career in Nigeria with your integrity intact and not having to lick any bosses' ass, it just depends on the company you work for. There are a lot of companies with well laid-out structures designed to prevent nepotism and favoritism especially in appraisal and pay determination processes. Simply put, your direct boss does not determine your appraisal 100%. You have processes to fdeal with integrity issues that will keep the whistle-blower anonymous (for conflict of interest, corruption etc). Your pay is well laid-out and never comes in later than 24th of every month come rain or shine. Personally, over the last 5 years I've averaged about 20% pay increase per year. To summarise, investigate the particular company you are interested in and ask questions of insiders. That a good gauge, not what one anonymous person says on nairaland. |

employee, entrepreneur, consultant, no matter which, you WILL be forced to compromise your integrity as an employee, who will you work with? if oga says give manipulate the contract award process for my girlfriend what do you do? as an entrepreneur, if an oga says settle me or you don't get your check, what do you do? as a consultant, if an oga says settle me or we ignore your bid, what do you do? personally, i don't really belive most of that western integrity rot. i have found that oyibos and naija expats can shed principles in a hurry when there's money to be made - high profile - look at bankole and our finance minister low profile - look at oyibos jumping queues everywhere |

Thanks for your honest comments, especially with regard to ' licking the bosses backside '. I have done exceedingly well here in the UK without pandering to people. I hope this will be replicated in a Nigeria. But by the way I am not hoping to work for a Nigerian or Arab country, my sights are on companies like Cisco, Juniper, Microsoft, google ( a wonderful Nairalander gave me a link for a google position ) etc. I should have thought these companies pay at least a wage commensurate to what one is used to abroad. |
