I hope they would also look into other regions port precisely the south east /south south Ports so as to diversify and decentralize too much concentration in one region which is the bane reason we are seeing so much congestion and gridlock in lagos ports area.
The reason we are seeing so much congestion in Apapa is not concentration in one region. THAT is not the reason .

There are countries that have no ports that import more than we do e.g Switzerland.
I think ports in other regions are a good idea to boost economic development in those regions. Not because of congestion
However let us not use sentiments to cloud logic..

The reason for congestion is poor evacuation infrastructure .
The evacuation infrastructure in Apapa was built over 40 years ago and has not been upgraded. If we had used money generated form the port to upgrade the infrastructure i.e roads , rail and dry docks we would not be in this situation

That problem of evacuation infrastructure investment will arise at any port anywhere.

Customs and NPA corruption and inefficiency are major contributors to congestion

All seaports are prioritize at Lagos State. Why not fund immediate construction of other seaports too in the south south or south east to distribute economic advantage.

This is funded by the Lagos State Government. You have Governors in your own states too, ask them. Stop crying senselessly.

There are ongoing deep sea port projects in Warri and Bonny...
There are also state government port projects (just like Lekki) in Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

Meanwhile, there are other operating ports at Onne (2), Calabar, PH, Warri and Sapele...
However, the government does NOT decide where goods are imported, PRIVATE importers do.
>

True. The government of Swaziland borrowed money from China for a new seaport. However only 45 ships docked in a year, as compared to 1000 at the old port, even though it was newer and bigger. Nigerians always resort to tribalism at the slightest news, however, its very clear to me that Lagos is Nigeria's economic power house.

Quit comparing Apples with Agbalumo... cheesy

LCC (the toll gate operators) is 100% owned by Lagos State government...
In contrast, the Lekki Port is private sector-led by Singapore-based Tolaram Group.

For the South South, they deserves their own port but the South East needs to double up their IGR in the federation account.

Each region must get development according to its contribution to the federal purse.

This project is an initiative of Lagos State Government.
The government of SE and SS states can do same for their own people too.
Lagos state government was elected to look after the people of Lagos not SS and SE.
I usually don't quote comments.. But I hope you read through, and I'm sure you didn't read there that the $1.6 billion was funded by lagos state government! Or did you?

Oloriburuku this port was moribund during Jonathan. May thunder strike each n every member of your household dead if Buhari as no hand in this project but if he does may it be well with your household.

Vaughanlanrewaj:

Only God knows how you sleep at night with this toxic hatred for your fellow human being and I think with this hatred, says a lot about your upbringing.

This is a project that had remained moribund since Fashola/ Yardua tenure because Lagos was in opposition but the man you hate Buhari is the one who made this project a reality.

God will not spare you or anyone with a heart such as yours or any heart filled with hatred. All these words will count against you some day. You will toil so hard for a project and they will still call you a disaster.

Not even Lucifer has this kind of hatred I see most of you display online yet you pretend to be godly people offline. Ha!! We from Lagos will forever remain grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari for this gesture. Such project of this magnitude was killed by a Yoruba President , Olusegun Obasanjo, during Asiwaju Tinubu tenure. Go and read about Enron Power Project. May God bless President Buhari. May God bless Nigeria my fatherland.

From your illustration above would it be wrong if onisha in a Anambra state in South East be also considered when projects like this is being drafted..? Wouldn't it alleviate vehicular and articulated vehicle movement in South west? Because what I'm saying together with your illustration is still on the same page.

This project is a private sector project . It has little to do with contribution to the Federation account and more to do with the investor friendly environment in Lagos State as well as the hardwork of previous governors.
Do not forget that the FG has to approve ports and the FG had always been PDP until 2015. The governors had to work to get approval

Geographically the best location for a seaport in Nigeria is Ondo state which has the longest shoreline not broken by creeks but there is no evacuation infrastructure.
If you look at a map of Nigeria you will see Ondo better placed than Lagos to service Kogi, Abuja Benue if there were rail/road links.
The governors of Ondo state have not worked hard enough ,not been focussed enough over the years to attract private investors.
The same is true of the governors of Delta and Akwa Ibom State

How much was Ibori reported to have stolen?

Are we to say delta State or Akwa Ibon state could not have found $1.6 billion since 1999?
Akpabio decided a stadium in Uyo was the priority of his people

This is not cheap irrelevant talk.
Except you are new on this app. They have always done that even when enlightened that it is the project of Lagos state.
FYI, Lagos contributes to the financing of the project and even owns part of it in a ownership deal with the investors. The land etc was provided by Lagos state.
Lagos state should never be concerned about your ignorance on its role. It doesn't have the role of establishing ports in SS.

Hope on delivery of the much-expected Lekki Deep Sea Port looks brighter as the construction of the $1.6 billion project reaches about 50 per cent completion.

The company said it has completed its 1,909m long core of the main breakwater while work on the quay wall and landside infrastructure has reached an advanced stage. The significant milestone of the completion of the core of the main breakwater was achieved on Thursday, April 29, 2021.

The Managing Director, Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited, Du Ruogang, disclosed this while briefing the Permanent Secretary, the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, and other key stakeholders.

Ruogang assured that the construction would be completed as scheduled with a targeted commercial operation expected in the last quarter of 2022. He affirmed that the container terminal operator – Lekki Freeport Terminal, a subsidiary of CGM/CMA, is ready to commence operations once the construction is completed.

“We would like to appreciate the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Lagos State Government and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) as well as other stakeholders for the immense support towards the actualisation of the world-class seaport”, he said.

Ajani stated that it was heart-warming to note that the project was moving at a fast pace, assuring all the promoters and stakeholders that the Federal Government would play its part to ensure the smooth take-off of the port as scheduled.

Ajani noted that the progress of work since the initial visit of the ministry in November 2020, is impressive and that the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Transportation would work out modalities of rail connectivity to the port for easy evacuation and transfer of cargo to the different parts of the country.

She also promised to liaise with her counterpart at the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing on the issue of the road network at the corridor to prevent the issue of congestion.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman, said that NPA will play its part to ensure that the timeline set for the delivery is achieved, adding that efforts are being made to facilitate the deployment of all necessary infrastructure needed before commercial operations begin.

“To meet the timeline for the Port, we would deploy the control tower as well as the BTS and GDMS which are critical infrastructure needed for the take-off of the port operations. In addition, we have to begin the construction of the administrative block”, Usman said.

The Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer, NSC, Hassan Bello reaffirmed the significance of Lekki Port to the economic prosperity of Nigeria noting that when completed, the port would be transformational for the country, and indeed the West African maritime landscape.

Director-General, NIMASA, Bashir Jamoh reiterated the importance of railway connectivity to the project.

While Calabar and Port Harcourt are CONCESSIONED to private operators - just like Apapa and Tin Can.
