Hmmm...... the parents are the ones that need early education on child development.... only then they would understand and not rush their infants to school and believe beating is the best way for a child to learn period.

Most parents do this to keep up with the Joneses. It's show-off,pure and simple. Whether you enroll your child in school early or not, that child will develop intellectually when they grow up,if they put in the dirty shifts of hardwork and personal development.

Just one question

Who will stay with the kids while they are not in school?

Which parent will leave their job and have to stay at home with these kids?

They can enroll them in daycare or day homes.

In some countries, I heard they even homeschool kids in their first 5 or 6 years.

Here, you have kids being shipped off to spend entire days in school before they can barely walk or talk.

One would think with the shocking and ridiculous number of hours of early life spent in schools, we would have a nation filled with geniuses and high intellect individuals... We all know that is far from it!

I agree with you.

A little bit of homeschooling, to increase the bond with the family before going out to school.

Another reason is that the immune system of these kids are not yet strong to fend of diseases.

So they need to be contained for a while before released into the world.
Absolutely correct.... Same way I was shocked to see my sister's primary 1 son talking about arms of government I weak

6-3-3-4 is already there naa.
A child should start primary 1 when they were 6 at their last birthday. And this issue of children jumping classes and skipping primary 6 should be discouraged.

Lol

6-3-3-4 does not exist anymore.

6-3-3-4 is a break down of the years of school

6 for The 6 years you are in Primary 1-6
3 for the 3 years of Junior Secondary
3 for the 3 years of Senior Secondary
4 for the 4 years in University

You do not even know what 6-3-3-4 means and you are here talking about the appropriate age of sending kids to school. You guys are hilarious

Who will stay home with your child for the first 6 years of their life oga? Will you stop working to stay home?

I think 3yrs is ideal age for kids to start school, forget about creche or whatever.....they play videos for them and eat their food

Download the videos on YouTube and play it in your house for them, pray with them always, teach them family values which no teacher can.

The main reason most students don't like school or anything that has to do with academics, is because, students seem not to have a pleasant experience of it from childhood, as a result of the behaviour of despite parents, who always try to force things into their child's head, even at pre developmental stage, when their brains hasn't yet developed to accommodate such school work.

However, it is crucial for parents to educate themselves on a proper age that is required and appropriate to enroll a child to school.

Finally, some parents should take it easy on children that seem not to respond to school work, because, the fact that a child doesn't seem to understand at infancy, won't make the child worse-off at latter stage of development, because, learning is a long life thing, and every learner should be given the opportunity to learn at their own pace.

By Abayomi.

In England all the schools, private and public stick for age standard before they enroll, I remember the son of my sister in law that went to England few years back.

Despite that he started schooling here already, they refused to admit him there until he reached age 5/6 then not specific again.

In naija everything goes.

You are right OP but enrollment of children at early stages is like that in every country of the world
that's not true. My colleague whose child was 5 years and already in pri 2 in abuja took the child to UK to stay with his dad. In UK, they refused to enrol him in primary 1, say he has to be 6 at his last birthday before he enter pri 1. They had to bring him back to lawless Nigeria to continue primary 2.

Norway has achieved a remarkable educational system. Adult literacy exceeds 99 percent, and school expectancy for a five-year-old in Norway was 17.7 years in 1998, one of the highest school expectancy rates of any country.

Yet their children don’t start any form of formal education until 6 years old. Before then, all they do is play well, eat well and sleep well. That is how children develop.

In Lagos 2 year old children are waking up at 4:30am to join their parents on a long ride to school. How will they develop? Sad.

Yes

The fire that is her office

If she did not resume 3 months after birth, she would have lost her job. She had to return to work.

Nobody will tell you this part about motherhood and child care, but if it is to ask women "What do you bring to the table?" It is easy.

Some people would say she should have forfeited the job, but this brings up the capability of her husband, because most men are unable to be sole providers for their families today

True. Children should learn at their pace. I once taught a class of 5year olds many years ago. One of the pupils would only eat and sleep. He didn't know numbers and couldnt speak properly. His results were always so bad that we had to patch them up to please his parents who wete always the first to pay fees. After many years, that same child got a fully paid scholarship to study créative writing in the US at masters level. He has several published stories to his credit.

Children in most of these western countries begin school aged six. We just do things anyhow in this country without actually analyzing the long term effects of what we do.

Enrolling a child in school early isn't the reason why students don't like education in this country, let's blame that on the situation of the country in general, in a country where majority of our graduates end up as an apprentice at a shop just because there's no job after school, how do you expect students to like school? They could see their elderly once who are through with school for several years yet without a job.

And we can't blame parents who enroll their children in school early, in a country where companies need a 24 year old employee with 5years of experience, what then can we say?
some parents enroll their kids very early so that they caN have time to attend to their business or work.

It is the system that enables all these things

You cannot have expectations of parents living in a system as damaging as what we see in Nigeria.

There is no proper maternity leave in Nigeria. In Germany, they give 12-month maternity leaves, in China, they are set to give same.

Labour laws and general laws favour some of these things. In Nigeria, such things are not even considered.

The problem here is the country, the people are just victims of a messed up system

In Nigeria, the reason why people register their kids early is well known :

1. The parents are working and the kids are at home. who will babysit them child? simple: the teachers are best positioned to be the baby sitter and the teachers,

2. it is now becoming competitive. Your kids are at home, meanwhile, your neighbour's kids are in school. during playtime, the school attending kids will ask questions like spell HIPPOTAMUS. The non-responsive kids will look like IGNORAMUS .

3. Early to bed is early to rise. KIds who get into schools early are likely to finish early. heard of 16 years getting into University and graduating at age 21?

4. You allow your kids late into the school and they are seen as granddaddies or Mummies? the low confident grand-kid might also turn out to be a bully

5. education get expensive as the year rolls by.........

Is it the wife that is working, or the underaged househelp?

Except your wife will not have a job and you want to provide fully for her and the child.

Sadly, this reality is not something most Nigerians have, because wives have to work.

Nobody is sending off their child because they want to, they are sending them to school because it is necessary.

Thank you for saying this so brilliantly.

The minimum school fees for any decent school is 30k and upwards these days. The minimum wage is 18k. Lots of parents are calculating the money they have to spend

Also, in Nigeria today that if you graduate at 25, you are already too old for the labour market, is it where you want to keep your child at home and delay their age of graduation?

And then there is the socialisation part for the child. It is part of healthy growing.

OP, do you have a child?

You think parents rush their kids because they really want to?

Let me educate you on the realities of Nigerian parents, because I noticed you have a lot of opinions that are more idealistic than realistic

BOTH parents have to go to work

Labour Laws do not favour even a decent maternity leave. Do you know that women have to return to work 3 months after birth? They cannot even find someone to stay with babies, how much more older children?

If people could keep their kids with them longer, they would, but this your post reeks of ignorance and insensitivity.

You cannot train anyone's child for them. When you start having your own kids, try out this your method and see how successful it is.

Don't mind them they don't have kids yet. When they start having kids and both parents need to work in order to make ends meet (even with both working the ends never meet anyway), either parents can't afford to stay at home with kids. Taking the kids to school as soon as they are weaned is the next best thing to hiring a nanny.

Quite correct, the essence of primary school is for a child to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations. The stupidity most parents display in their child's education is alarming.

We are always covering the shame of men and coddling them in this country

People that cannot provide for themselves and a family are always so bold to come online and make demands of the women who have to carry babies for 9 months, risk their lives to birth them, and dedicate their lives to caring for these kids

If you ask "Who will stay with the child?" A man will tell you "The mother of course", why are men always avoiding their kids? You could not carry the child and you still don't want to spend time with them.

The day these same women that have to stay with the child ask for money to run the house, the same men will come here and write epistles about how their wives do not contribute.

If you stay with a child for 24 hours, you will respect housewives.

Contribution in a family goes way beyond monetary contributions. In fact, I would argue that money is not even the most important one. These children are human beings that need love and care, somebody must show this to them.

We cannot continue to excuse people from their parental roles because these people call themselves the sole providers, while failing to provide. Men are not the sole providers, women work too. Men must participate more in child care. Children are not functioning properly, because parents are not pulling their weights equally. Someone is slacking and it is almost always the father.
