“It was necessary” Ini Edo replies Mike Bamiloye, other critics of nudity in Shanty Town (video)

Ini Edo, an actress and mother who was involved in the production of the much-talked-about Shanty Town Movie, has finally responded to critics of the Nollywood series’ loud nudity.

This comes after Evangelist Mike Bamiloye, the founder of Mount Zion Ministries, took aim at Nigerian celebrities, particularly actors and actresses who promote nudity, romance, and other social vices in their films.

Responding to critics in a chat with BBC Pidgin, Ini Edo, who played ‘Inem’ in Shanty Town, explained that the movie couldn’t be shot without nude scenes because the story is about crime and prostitution.

According to her, it would be impossible to convey the movie’s message without including a sex scene.

Ini Edo went on to say that Shanty Town is a story about crime and prostitution, and such a story cannot be told without displaying nudity.

The actor stated that going naked was not done to degrade anyone, but rather to make the film appear more realistic.

The veteran actor also chastised the overemphasis placed on a woman’s body, urging people to see a woman’s body as a simple creation of God, devoid of strange reasonings.

Korean Kdrama come to mind.

Nollywood should go and learn from them instead. There's no scenario in Nollywood movies that Korean Kdrama hasn't played and they do that with minimal nudity.

The problem is Nigeria always thinking that the standards of Caucasians is always the best. We don't copy the good thing the white do in terms of relational integrity. It's the bad sides of their society we want to copy and prove that we're civilized.

Necessary for what purpose actually? Maybe to make the movie more talked about or for sales purposes but definitely not to make it more real. ( As it’s been talked about presently…in fact I think the movie is trending more due to the nude content. I haven’t seen the movie yet but all the talk about it I have been hearing are about the nudity in it and not for it’s other qualities or content)

Modern movies I think have very minimal nudity or sex content. Movie is all about make believe and acting and a good director should do a good job of portraying what he wants his audience to believe and not necessarily involving in the actual act.

It’s not being hypocritical. yes some people who have criticized the nudity do watch porn but it’s supposed to be a choice and not thrown at peoples face.


As someone pointed out above Korean movies do very minimal nudity in their movies aren’t their movies looking real.

In Indian movies they are rarely kissing scenes but India produces some of the most romantic movies world wide. It’s just good directing basically.

I am with bamiloye on this one. Besides he has been in film directing, producing and filming generally for a very long time and he should know what he is talking about.

That old man is a bloody hypocrite... You can't criticize something in public if you haven't fully watched it and reviewed it.

It's clear he watched the full movie and I'm sure his favorite scenes were those sex scenes that he's criticizing in public.
