Lies, Lies, Lies About Buhari And The 5 Years Of Maitatsine by Beaf: 3:02pm On Dec 27, 2011
This is a thread to burst the outright lies being spread about the Maitatsine uprisings.
It is strange the way the rumour mill hijacks the laziest minds and turns them into efficient propagators of super-stretched tall tales and unenvieble gossip.
The duty of every morally and mentally robust citizen is setting the records straight.

It is easy to see that boko haram is the same as Maitatsine, they share the same beliefs, theology and violent methods. Maitatsine never ended in 1985 (indeed its second leader was arrested in 2004).

Maitatsine

Mohammed Marwa (died 1980), best known by his nickname Maitatsine, was a controversial Islamic scholar in Nigeria. Maitatsine is a Hausa word meaning "the one who damns" and refers to his curse-laden public speeches against the Nigerian state.[1]

Background
He was originally from Marwa in northern Cameroon. After his education he moved to Kano, Nigeria in about 1945, where he became known for his controversial preachings on the Qur'an. Maitatsine claimed to be a prophet,[2] and saw himself as a mujaddid in the image of Sheikh Usman dan Fodio.[1] Although a Koranic scholar, he seemingly rejected the hadith and the sunnah and regarded the reading of any other book but the Koran as paganism. Maitatsine spoke against the use of radios, watches, bicycles, cars and the possession of more money than necessary.[3][4] In 1979, he even rejected the prophethood of Mohammed and portrayed himself as an annạbi (Hausa for "prophet"wink.[4]

The British colonial authorites sent him into exhile, but he returned to Nigeria shortly after independence. He returned to Kano and by 1972 he had a notable and increasingly militaristic following of Yan Tatsine.[4] In 1975 he was again arrested by Nigerian police for slander and public abuse of political authorities.[citation needed] But in that period he began to receive acceptance from religious authorities, especially after making hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.[citation needed] As his following increased in the 1970s, so did the number of confrontations between his adherents and the police. His preaching attracted largely a following of youths, unemployed migrants, and those who felt that mainstream Muslim teachers were not doing enough for their communities.[citation needed] By December 1980, continued Yan Tatsine attacks on other religious figures and police forced the Nigerian army to become involved. Subsequent armed clashes led to the deaths of around 5,000 people, including Maitatsine himself.[4] Maitatsine died shortly after sustaining injuries in the clashes either from the wounds or from heart attack.[5]

Legacy
Despite Marwa's death, Yan Tatsine riots continued into the early 1980s. In October 1982 riots erupted in Bulumkuttu, near Maidaguri, and in Kaduna, to where many Yan Tatsine adherents had moved after 1980. Over 3,000 people died. Some survivors of these altercations moved to Yola, and in early 1984 more violent uprisings occurred in that city. In this round of rioting, Musa Makaniki, a close disciple of Maitatsine, emerged as a leader and Marwa's successor.[4][5] Ultimately more than 1,000 people died in Yola and roughly half of the 60,000 of the city's inhabitants was left homeless. Makaniki fled to his hometown of Gombe, where more Yan Tatsine riots occurred in April 1985. After the deaths of several hundred people Makaniki retreated to Cameroon, where he remained until 2004 when he was arrested in Nigeria.[4]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boko_Haram

Since the Maitatsine uprising in Kano in the 1980s, Nigerians north of the Niger have witnessed several other crises, with each incident presenting its own peculiarity and sophistication, even as each has idiosyncratic set of challenges. Those conversant with the issue can attest to the fact that the Boko Haram imbroglio is a metamorphosis of earlier unresolved religious fallouts. Quite contrary to views being peddled to the effect that it was a recent development and a creation of a particular person or persons, Boko

Haram remains a phenomenon whose manifestation is the fulfilment of earlier threats posed by the activities of fundamentalists.

The Boko Haram ideology is quite in tandem with the ones expressed by the late Mohammed Maitatsine, Kala Kato, and other fiery clerics whose teachings tended to derive its strength from the Hadith, much more than it does from the Holy Qur'an.

The Yusiffiya group, which from every manifestation is an offshoot of the Maitatsine, later Kala Kato, transforming into the Taliban group and later Boko Haram, has its roots in some Middle East countries. When in 2002 a self-styled group, the Taliban, was reported in Kannama in Yobe State and later Gwoza in Borno State, many Nigerians paid little attention to its activities. By 2009, the group had found volunteers among who are believed to be some security operatives, academics, politicians and other professionals.

http://allafrica.com/stories/201107240006.html

Religious unrest is not new to Bauchi State. The Kala-Kato mayhem is the third of such incidents in Bauchi in 2009. During the Boko Haram mayhem in Borno and Yobe States, last July, Bauchi was one of the theatres of conflict, with attendant casualties.

Nigerians expect that some lessons should have been learnt from that incident, and intelligence gathering employed to prevent a recurrence, but this was not the case.

The frequent attacks on law enforcement officers and innocent members of the public during conflicts involving religious fundamentalists call for a more serious approach to the problem of religious unrest in the country. The Kala-Kato sect, which is responsible for the latest conflict, claims to be an offshoot of the original Maitatsine sect of the 1980s. With the violent antecedents of Maitatsine in Nigeria, members of the sect ought to have been closely monitored by security agencies to ensure that they do not become a threat to the public.

Below, is another article on boko haram:

Boko Haram
. . .
Background

Main article: Islam in Nigeria

Since the fall of the Sokoto Caliphate to the British in 1903, the area's Muslims have tended to resist Western education.[8] Some analysts view the group's emergence as an extension of the Maitatsine riots of the 1980s and subsequent ethnic and religious tensions in the 1990s.[14]

Origin
Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf formed Boko Haram in 2002 in Maiduguri.[14] He established a religious complex that included a mosque and a school. Many poor families from across Nigeria and from neighboring countries enrolled their children in the school, which also served as a recruiting center for jihadis to fight the Nigerian state.[8] In 2004 it moved to Kanamma, Yobe State, where it set up a base called "Afghanistan", used to attack nearby police outposts, killing police officers.[15] Yusuf is hostile to democracy and the secular education system, vowing that "this war that is yet to start would continue for long" if the political and educational system was not changed.[16]

In Bauchi the group was reported as refusing to mix with the local people. The group includes members who come from neighbouring Chad and speak only in Arabic.[17][18]

In truth, Maitatsine lasted much longer than 5 years, because even the British had problems with Marwa. The deeper question that needs answering, is why the core-North is always fertile ground for extremist religion and religion laced politics.
Why have the virulent methods and theology of Maitatsine survived through boko haram and its twin, kala kato?

Lemme guess, are you trying to put Buhari head to head with GEJ?

Haba! Remember, Buhari is a shattered-eyed,blood thirsty, religious bigot, while GEJ is a Messiah and God sent. Besides, Buhari should be arrested according to Beaf, for sponsoring Boko Haram.

Or are you trying painstakingly to justify inactions of GEJ in dealing head-on with Boko Haram, which is causing the daily loss of innocents lives? Please pick your options.

Really, wonders shall never cease! I wont waste my time educating your repeatative ignorance and over feeding your lazy brain. grin

All that Buhari did was kill the the Camerounian Muhammadu Marwa (Maitatsine), while the maitatsine was allowed to continue flourishing; just the same way Yar Adua killed Ustaz Mohammed and left boko haram to fester. It is history repeating, like a video tape on rewind.
These organisations have been continously beheaded with their followership left intact; not just that, but the major tools of recruitment (abject poverty and almajinci) have been left to multiply exponentially.

It is noteworthy that Buhari ruled in an age without the internet and mobile phones, yet the maitatsine, unaided by bomb recipies from the web and without the instant communications and organisational advantages mobile phones bring; armed with sticks and stones, maitatsine riots claimed the lives of an eye-popping 5000!
Under Buhari's military dictatorship, it is estimated that between 1000 - 2000 died at the hands of maitatsines sticks, stones and daggers. Did someone sit back and allow it happen? Yet, for some unfathomable reason many liars are in the streets trying to paint black into white.

Even in todays high-tech World where bomb designs are a mere google away and mobile phone are a dime to the dozen, boko haram has accounted for 360 deaths. Therefore, one must ask why the loud lies and sordid politics over blood from Buhari's people. Life is a precious thing, but for evil people, it is a political tool to be used against an "infidel" government. It is very dangerous ground to tread; let those with ears hear.

As we speak, perhaps other murderers are being kept out of harms way and trained as the next boko haram leaders. How else could this 2009 story be interpreted?
The real problem is the use of religion as a tool of political "persuasion" in the core-North.

Maitatsine and Boko Haram - Lessons Not Learnt

As I write this note, the alleged mastermind of the 1984 Maitatsine Riots in Yola, Adamawa state sits in Yola Prison.

His prosecution for more than 10 years appears to have run into a cul-de-sac. It is said that all evidence remains circumstantial and prosecution is unable to pin down witnesses to hang a sentence on the man. In effect, the man believed and suspected for the Yola Maitatsine disturbances of 1984, could walk out of Yola prison and into society, a victorious and free man. Case closed. This is an event, over which Justice Mohammed Uwais our former Chief Justice of the Federation sat as Chairman of the Judicial Panel of Enquiry, examined evidence and interviewed known witnesses, made findings and recommendations known to government.

The problem is that there is so much illiteracy in the north; people acting on what they are told, lacking in capacity to reason for themselves based on common sense. This same symptom is in the south but pretty limited.

Why have the virulent methods and theology of Maitatsine survived through boko haram and its twin, kala kato?
instead of injuring the reputation of someone totally unconnected with the evil group. I can help you with scholarly research published by N. D. DANJIBO of Peace and Conflict Studies Programme, Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan. Here we go:

Mission
“The mission of the sect was to establish an Islamic state where ‘orthodox Islam’ is practised. Orthodox Islam according to him (Mohammed Yusuf, leader of the sect) frowns at Western education and working in the civil service because it is sinful. Hence, for their aim to be achieved, all institutions represented by government including security agencies like police, military and other uniformed personnel should be crushed”
(Tell, August 10, 2009, p. 34).

Membership
Newswatch magazine learnt that as far back as 2004, parents and security agencies became worried about the activities of the sect and the involvement of youths. “This is because students especially in tertiary institutions in Borno and Yobe states like the University of Maiduguri, Ramat Polytechnic Maiduguri, Federal Polytecnic Damaturu and others who constitute their members withdrew from school, tore their certificates and joined the group for Qur’anic lessons and preaching” (Tell, August 10, 2009, p. 34). However, despite several complaints by parents and security agencies, government did not deem it necessary to take steps to curtail the activities of the sect. In fact, Governor Ali Modu Sherrif of Borno State, where the Boko Haram crisis wrecked a lot of havoc on people and government institutions, acknowledged that he was approached by a former Commissioner in his cabinet, who had resigned to join the sect, to also resign as governor and join the sect. According to him, it would be the only way he could merit heaven, politics being corrupted.

DISDAIN FOR WESTERN EDUCATION
In Northern Nigeria there is often a distinction between “makarantan boko” (schools providing “Western” education) and “makarantan addini” (school for religious instruction) or “makarantan allo” (school of the slate understood to be Koranic schools). There is no gainsaying that even among Muslim elite in Northern Nigeria, preference is usually given to the Islamic slate than to Western education. This accounts for the “almajeri2 syndrome” (pupils and students learning the Koran) to the extent that pupils who attended schools for Western education were treated
with contempt and derision.

Begging as a way of life and the corrupting influence of the British colonial masters
It is worth noting that a good number of almajirai (Hausa plural of almajeri) come from very wealthy homes but are subjected to the mendicant way of life, ie. surviving by begging. Parents, the society and the government do not find it disturbing that the almajirai roam in the streets. It often makes them vulnerable to social vices including being a ready-made army that can be recruited to perpetrate violence. In 1964, the late Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and the Premier of Northern Nigeria, boasted of establishing over 2 million Koranic schools scattered in all parts of Northern Nigeria (see, Paden, 1986). This notwithstanding, colonial authorities also conspired with the Northern elite at the inception of colonial administration through the indirect rule. They shielded the Muslim north from being exposed to Western education and culture (Coleman, 1986; Dudley, 1968; Ohadike, 1992). As succinctly put by Sanusi (2007: 181):
“One consequence of the alliance between the British and the emirates was that the integrity of the political and social structures in the north could only be achieved by sealing the region off from Western influences, including from southern Nigeria. In this attempt to insulate the north from modernity, Western education was severely curtailed in order to prevent in the north what Lord Lugard termed the “utter disrespect” for
British and natives ideals alike that was beginning to emerge in the south”. For this reason, only few Western schools were built by British colonial
administration in Northern Nigeria, and the consequential impact became one of the major reason for which Nigeria could not gain independence in 1957. In fact, the north lacked the human capacity to run its administration.

Modern External Influence
Furthermore, there is also growing concerns of external influences that are
impinging and shaping religions and religious organisations in sub-Saharan Africans especially in Nigeria. Nigerian Muslim organisations and their Christian counterparts have links to the Middle East and the West. While the Christians are seen to tilt towards the Euro-American pole, the Muslims look up to the Arab world for religious alliance. The Iranian revolution of 1989, anti-Western imperialism, has gained acceptance amongst the Muslim community in Nigeria. In Northern Nigeria today, Christian evangelism and even academic research sponsored by the international community other than from Islamic countries are perceived to be a part of the agenda of Western imperialism (Umar, 2001; Ohadike, 1992).

Not at all. The loss of lives and properties due to GEJ's foot dragging, slow approach to decision making and indifference to a serious national emergency  situation is unacceptable. Argue with the numerous articles I cited. We cannot continue to go with sentimental assertions and make believe.
The argument that boko haram is an offshoot of maitatsine does not take away from the fact that it is a political tool, just like maitatsine was. All we have seen is the killing of the leaders, only for others to take their place.

Neither does your groundless assertion take away from the fact that maitatsine killed thousands in Buhari's time, armed with sticks and bows, without phones, internet, bombs or any sophisticated weapons. How could that have happened under a military dictatorship. Did someone deliberately stand aside while thousands were bludgeoned to death? How are such figures possible?

Even present times, with the internet, twitter, mobile phones, sophisticated weapons from Libya and readily available bomb recipe's from the web, there have been 360 deaths in the same time frame that Buhari's regime mounted thousands. It is really strange that eye-popping thousands died in Buhari's time and yet his followers are manufacturing history!

Kala Kato have repeatedly killed hundreds of people since the 90's and they openly claim to be maitatsine, yet Buhari claims to have defeated the group. We've also learnt that the last leader of maitatsine was arrested in Nigeria in 2004, yet Buhari is supposed to have crushed maitasine. Can you tell me what has happened to him? For all we know, he could be the new leader or so-called spokesman of boko haram. They are all expendable political tools, used and killed after they have killed thousands.

Who is revising history, and why? angry

Buhari is also the reason why the average pay for Senators in Nigeria is north of $2million while the Government says it cant afford a $60 minimum wage pay for Nigerians.
