It seems people are not making official complaints, how can they change?

Can someone start a blog or something like: Complaint Against NPF (CANPF) or anything like that?

Because it will help collate people's experiences and that may be able to draw international attention. You know our so-called leaders hate international embarassment. That's the only thing the fear. It may start small but because the NPF may soon have their cup full soon, you never know. All these complaints are not official.

When complaining include as much detail as you can, get the Policeman's Number and name, police station, place and time of incident, what exactly happened and final outcome (e.g. forced to pay bribe or pay for bail, physical/mental abuse/torture, threats, forced confessions, detention, etc).

They will rather slavishly obey American Ambassador (see Wikileaks)instead of serving the electorate.

It ws a saturday evening, precisely, 13th June 2009. I had just got wedded and went to see my parents at Ipaja side of Lagos.
On my way home (ogba area), i took a bic and loo and behold, a police officer jump on the road from behind a trailer (apprently he was hissing there)

We (the cyclist and i) fell from the back i had initially thought it was an armed robber ( oh sorry yes he is, only that he is licensed to operate that way).As i was getting up, someone flashed light on us and it was trhen i saw his partner in police uniform. Releived that we were not delaing with armed robbers, I asked, "oga why did u do this, see what you have caused us" that was my crime.

Haba!!! u have the gut to question a police officer, so they descended on me and beat me with all brutality. I was in their custody tilkl about 12.20 am before they released me, many thanks to a Dierctor of service in Lagos state then.
I was beaten to the extent that i had a dislocation on my right shoulder.
I was home for weeks before i could resume work.

I received the greates shock of my life when i got to Lagos Teaching Hospital and a doctor there told me that Nigerian Police is full of insane men.

I agree that many, perhaps above 90% of them satisfy the doctor's description. but i have met few of them who are thorogh bred professional, but they are so few in numbers to wield any siognificance influence.

My thots exactly, if the Police are to change it has to come from within their circles - A group of reformers at the top and middle levels with the backing of the Presidency. otherwise you will simply end up with an institution that produced he-goats like Mike Okiro, Tafa Balogun and Alao Akala

omokidew: They caught me at ikotun in front of First Bank and dragged me into their station.. They then searched me and found a western union receipt with me.. Searched my phone and found an American number.. The name on the western union receipt was a Nigerian name as the sender and the number belonged to an uncle but they weren't deterred. They made me call the number thinking i was a yahoo boy and i saved a maga's number using a nigerian name but they heard my uncle talking.. He was calling my name and wanted to know why i was calling him that late and if i received the money he sent. That didnt stop them either.. They opened my phone and threw my battery into the gutter, brought out a paper and started dictating for me.. ""Say you are a criminal" .. When i refused to follow their instructions, i received the hottest slap of my life and they brought out an electric taser .. Omo, when i saw the device sparking, no be person tell me to start writing everything they instructed me to write.. I pleaded with them to let me go that the money was meant for my fathers hospital bill who just had a stroke. Forget oo, they deducted #20,000 naira from the 120 and asked me to go and bring my father. How could i possibly bring someone that was already bedridden .. Anyway, my old man died 2 weeks later and till today, i keep asking myself if i should have made a case with them. Where do i go and where to start from. Who will listen to me and if its goig to become a license for more harassment ..

This is serious. I almost had the same experience too some years back. I was coming out of a bank with a friend where I went to collect some money sent through western union and this money was sent by a close friend of mine. Myself and my friend had hardly taken some steps away from the bank when these policemen came out from nowhere and started asking us questions. One of the policemen then said he would like to search us so as to see what we had in our pockets and I told him point blank that he did not keep anything inside my pockets so he has no right to tell me to bring out the contents of my pocket for him to see on the highway. While this was going on, the other policemen were watching us from a short distance and I stood on my ground that I won't bring out the contents for him to see because I had already shown him my ID card and he has also frisked our bodies and he did not notice anything unusual when doing it. While we were still dragging the matter, another policeman then came to meet us and said he must search me and the next thing he did to me was dipping his hands into my pockets and I just didn't know what went over me so I landed him a hot slap and he was even dazed to do anything. Immediately that happened, I saw the other policemen running towards us and I just signalled to my friend that we should take to our heels cos I know if I had waited for the others to come, I'm sure I won't be on NL writing this incident right now.
To cut the long story short, they were unable to catch me but they got my friend and I had to send some other friends to go bail him later that day with 6000.
The Nigerian police Force is one hell of a sick organization.

Many of the replies are very disheartening. Very bad. Do we have any policeman in the house? Please let us hear from you if you are one.

And I hope according to the bolded part above, there is a way of bringing these excesses to the relevant authority

I can tell how crazy the NPF is as i have had an encounter with them before. I have sworn that it will never happen again so any police man/woman who comes to me with trouble, I do this................Beat the hell out of him/her with my friends. whenever i am being caught or accused of shit by the police, i dont let them take me to the station. I call my friends at the spot and they come running to the scene like bees. The last police man i dealt with will never forget the beating he got till he dies.

@ say-d-fact,

the essence is for people to know that Nigerians undergo a lot of abuses at the hands of police, the rate of response shows that 'our right no dey for constitution' otherwise how can you explain all these abuses.if you have never had the experience you will think police case is bread and butter, maybe as people are sharing their experiences someone can proffer an easy solution other than going to hire a lawyer because dat one na long matter o(because at times you go don sleep for cell like 3 days before the lawyer go bail you).Recently my cousin's lodge mate sold the guy's property and still went to report the guy at police station that the guy was threatening him the police came and arrested my cousin for threatening the guy after writing statement that the guy sold his property they locked him up released him after 3 days(because is weekend) and again took his statement and went to arrest the lodge mate that locked him up before (can you imagine).is it not right that when the guy reported police should investigate the case and settle it once and for all?why must police engage in first- to- report-is-the -winner-of-the-case method always?is it not because of money that will be involved?yes let everybody spill their mind so that if you are reading it or you are not in Nigeria you will know the correct situation on ground.

was walking out of the sheraton with my gf back in 2004...they stopped and asked us to get into the pick up van...entrities to them that we were leaving the club cos my gf was feeling sick and had just vomitted fell on deaf ears...we were detained till morning as i didnt have upto what they demanded...they followed us to s friends house to collect money from him....it is obvious every ig that comes into office say the same things and the day light robbery continues cos we have chosen to be docile....none of us has chosen to sue their pants off....until we do we shall continue to suffer....as for me im getting surveillance equipment to capture them in all these atrocities and then release it on utube etc....this include the imigration people at the airports too....

Mine was when I was still in the uni. I went to the bank to collect some money from the SUG account(being an official of the SUG). Immediately I came out of the bank, two ugly policemen walked up to me and asked me to come with them to their van. in getting there, they checked me, saw the money on me and bundled me down to their station. Unfortunately for them, some students saw what happened and reported the case at the SUB. By the time my Comrades came with lot of students already gingered with the ALUTA song, the D.P.O came to the cell where I was, called me out and begged me to go and talk to my people to calm down. When I was released and got outside their station, I fell for the superior power of the ALUTA spirit. I demanded that the two policemen that brought me to the station must beg me in front of the students which they did and I helped them with my own gift of slaps(just the way they gave it to me).

Mkpakala: Have You Ever Been Oppressed/molested By Police? Feel Free To Share It Here

Hello nairalanders,

my intention of creating this thread is to make a lighter mood of any form of embarrassment by policemen.if you have ever been molested or oppressed by a policeman just feel free to come and share it here.I will start by sharing my own first. It happened 18 years ago when i was still in senior secondary, it was around 6.30pm i was coming from a friend's house unknown to me that some cultist just raided the area and shot one guy very close to my house. As usual the stupid policemen waited for more than 45 mins after those guys had left before arriving, like a proverbial monkey that doesnt know the bush is on fire and still went ahead to jump inside the bush, I was on top of bike going home, i got to the street adjoined to my street the whole place was deserted i was still wondering what happenned when some group of unscruplous element that call themselves police just rushed out from a hidden place and shouted the bike man down before i could say jack robinson the policemen ordered us into their open van brandishing their gun and the worst part is none of my family member knew my whereabout. They took me and the okada man to their station, on getting there I saw one guy they just released i pleaded with the guy to go and inform my family but to no avail.later in the night when it seems nobody is coming to bail us they pushed me and the bike man inside the cell room.Everywhere was dark but i can see a silhouette on the wall, after few minutes i heard a coarse voice asking what did you do?i didnt bother to respond neither the bike man did,out of the darkness i saw something that moved like a thunder GBOSA that was a thunderous slap from the kodo(ie the armed robber that assume the post of cell presido)it was given to the okada man but the effect was resounding in my eardrum, the bikeman start pleading with the kodo to have mercy on him.The voice repeated the question what did you do?i dont need an ifa priest to tell me this time around that the question was meant for me out of fear i told the guy that i shot two policemen at lokoja-abuja express way(lol can you imagine) the guy said why didnt they kill you or at least shot you at legs because thats the norm i responded i was not caught at the scene of the robbery the guy just laughed and said 'u go tey for here'.needless to say that the bike man used his eyes to see his two ears and i was spared because they believed i shot a policeman.

could you imagine as early as 5.0 clock the same kodo (armed robber presido inside the cell) woke me up to lead them in prayer.lol mehn the experience is not a funny one because that night was the longest night i have ever spent no thanks to the odour and mosquitoes that will besiege on you as if you were donated to them. I thank God that my parents came to bail me out the same day.please you can share your own story

woodcook: Mine was when I was in 3rd year, as usual then I always study during the break as if school was in session. That faithful Saturday, I went to a nearby secondary school (Urban Girls ) to study it was around 9am. When I was about leaving between 1pm and 2pm, I noticed two guys came around in bike and just at the entrance of the class as I was about stepping out one of the guys accosted me and requested for my id. Without suspecting anything I flashed my school ID and the guy grabbed it from me and claimed I had come around to smoke weed. Gosh, I was like you can see my bag and books and also I had my Bible in my bag. The guy was like they have orders to arrest anyone found in the premises, behold there were group of area boys playing football around and the so called officer just turned a blind eye towards them. They insisted I join them to the station to make a statement and that would be it. Well before I could say one more word this slap came from no where and I respectfully mounted the bike with them. Unfortunately for me I never had a phone through out my Uni days, then I saw it like an unnecessary distraction at that moment I wished I had one, since I was dead sure the bike was going to pass through my street to the station. No phone no help, so I found myself at the station with tear pouring down my eyes. When I got to the station the two fellas asked me to seat behind the counter and left to continue their raid. With teary eyes I was trying to explain to one of the female officer and that she should look at my bag and see that I was studying, behold another slap came from the officer standing next to the female officer, then I realized I was not supposed to stay anything but to sit put. Sitting down and sobbing like a baby filled with rage, there came one other guy, though not on duty, he actually saw me when they brought me. He asked if I have a phone I should call my people, I told him I don't have one so he took me out to a nearby house where they happened to have a business center. I called my friend and told him to call my uncle, since my dad was not in town. After sitting in the biz center for a while I got bored brought out my book and began to read and the officer that brought me to make call walked up to me and for the first time asked me what happened. I explained everything to him, he was mad, he was like that was not how to make money. He has been telling his colleagues to stop harrasing innocent people and he then asked me to leave. I told him I couldn't because the officers are with my student id. In the middle of the gist I saw my uncle drove in I went to meet him and he was like who arrested you I told him the guys have gone out, most of the officers in the station were like Dr. what brought you? My uncle told them they arrested his son who has gone to study the officers around were apologetic, when the guys with my id walked in, and they were told by their senior officer to hand me my id and apologize to me they did. On our way out they were like Dr. at least give us money for fuel for bringing your boy to this place. My uncle was furious and he told them to take me back to where they picked me in the first place, though I never told my uncle they slapped me lol. But my friend ended up giving them 200 naira without my uncle noticing. That evening I prayed for them because I was hurt and filled with rage. One week later one of them nearly got killed by group of area boys along the rail line in Aku street. I was pleased that he tasted what it feel like to be helpless if not for people around those guys would have killed him and his partner. his stupid partner bailed!

You self which kind dirty read read person you be, U dey even read under detention chai.

Mine was in 2005 (during my undergraduate days), i went to visit one of my babe's in Unizik in Awka, when the bus i boarded dropped me off at a nearby police station, when i disembarked i looked around and decided to cross over to the other side of the road to take a bike to my destination, a policeman followed me, then approached and dragged me by my trouser calling me a cultist and a robber telling his colleagues that i wanna attack their police station. I tried to explain to the dumb jer.k but he was deaf. and when the people around who knew me tried to explain to him, he accused them for been an accomplice. like play like play... I spent the weekend there till one Calabar policeman came to my rescue. since then the NPF disgust me!

My ordeal wasn't just at the hands of the police; soldiers were involved too. Before the incident i'd always regarded the presence of JTF soldiers at checkpoints as a good development, you know, a sliver of rationality to balance the boundless insanity of the policemen. I took a different view of things after the incident.

It happened last year,
towards the end of the session,
which is about the time the annual law dinner is held. We were returning from the event, i and three other friends, in a car driven by one of the latter. All our woes that night could be deservedly blamed on that vehicle.

It was a shabby little contraption in the guise of a toyota corolla that couldn't have been manufactured later than 1985. Bald tires, non-existent shocks, faulty headlights and conked out wipers.

It was dark and raining hard.

Visibility was so poor that the car often drifted wide and rubbed against the sidewalk. We got to a checkpoint manned by members of the JTF and announced our arrival by crashing into that concrete median island that separates the lanes.

A soldier was standing a few yards away from the collision point. Another one stood a little farther, peering into passing vehicles and waving his flashlight.
The closer one walked up to us, opened the driver-side door and removed the key from the ignition, swearing in hausa all the while. We filed out of the car in a very sombre manner, wondering what would be the most intelligent thing to say, or if it would be clever to say anything at all.

A brief and decidedly incriminating interrogation followed. Where's your driving licence? E
no dey. Vehicle particulars na? Absent. Good.

Our predicament was quite clear to us. These supposedly law enforcement agents can be enough of a pain in the butt even when you're on the right side of the law, and look how easily we had worked to skewer ourselves firmly over their barbecue.

Somehow, probably as a result of both the cumulative prayers of my mum and those i uttered on the spot grin , we weren't roughed up. That means no slaps or olympic-standard laps of frog jumping. But we were made to stand in the rain
for over two hours. I'm talking about jos here, so yes, it was deathly cold. Even the soldiers had thick waterproof overcoats on.

They told us in a frighteningly straightforward manner that we were going to spend the night in the Angwan Rogo police station.
Angwan rogo and indeed all of bauchi road, where the incident occurred, is a notorious deathtrap for christians, as it is entirely populated by belligerent proponents of the other religion.

A night in a cell there would almost have meant certain death, and would have definitely led to the loss of our money and gadgets.

To cut a very long and harrowing story short, my friend who had driven the car managed to call his dad, an SS officer. The dad arrived after half an hour and still spent a seemingly interminable time 'talking' with the soldiers and their boss.

Anyway, we were allowed to go at about 11:30pm; the whole incident must've started at about 8pm.

The next law dinner is still a long way off, but i know already that i won't be going. grin

mine was in 2010. I was driving into minna in niger state when some s.too.peed policemen stopped me. They demanded to see my vehicle papers which i gave to them without arguing. Upon seeing that they were in order, they demanded to see the custom papers as well as the original receipts of purchase. Of course i couldn't produce those since i was on transit. Next thing i knew, i was at their station with my vehicle impounded. Unfortunately for them, i have a strong connection at the governor's office so i just put a call across. Come and see! Next thing, the commissioner of police called the dpo of that station and asked why my car was impounded. He just kept stuttering on the phone. Not only was my car ordered to be released immediately, the foo.oolZ who stopped me were demanded to be seen by the commissioner. Afterwards, one of them said ol' boy i no know say u strong like this o

I hated going to church. Infact I had not gone to church since I gained admission and I insulted most MOG and my church-going friends/colleagues. It was on a friday, october 1st, 2010. Was in my 2nd semester of my 2nd year as an undergraduate. I decided to reach boys hostel(our boys hostel is off camp and I also base off camp) to get my already charged reading lamp and study. See yawah oh. Na about some minutes to 11pm and me jst put indomie 4 fire come dey go hostel wey be like 600m away. I dey waka my own, 3 other guys dey the other side of d road dey smoke(dat one no concern me). Like 2mins later, one pick up begin dey race down. . . 'Hold them, hold them, hold them'. As these 3 guys run, me kukuma join them dey follow them. By my calculation, dem go enta bush but e no occur 2 me sey na dia area be that. I enta bush and in no time, only Baba J sabi where these 3 guys disappear go hide but these police fools sabi say person enta bush(me). Na so dem come back, stand for my front. The next thing I go hear na "shoot the animal". My mum dey sss so I dey used to the intimidatiom. My belief be say bullet no dey the gun. Omo, as one of the MIB(men in black) co.c.k the gun, I sharp sharp grab say bullet dey am 'cos if dem co.c.k gun wey bullet (no) dey, I go sabi. Omo, I fear oh. As I c.om.e see moonlight reflect d gun, d gun dey point my face, see fear. I jst use speed push the gun up. As the gun dey move up, the thing sound .

The thing hot. I begin grow goose pimples, my leg dey shake, I co.m.e piss 4 trouser. Wetin vex me 4 that piss be say I been jst piss correct piss and the piss wey I piss for trouser na piss wey I for piss the next day. My voice begin dey tremble. . . "yes! That is the criminal. . . Where is the gun? . . . Where is the iegbo?". I started begging them. Chei! I neva beg like that before 4 my life. I don already see myself 4 hell. I been wan repent there but fear nor gree me. I tell them ma full name, my dept., matric number, my hod name, my dept'al presido name, all my lecturers name, . . . Dem search me, sit me down for middle of road, eagle-spread my leg like common criminal with piss trouser. Dem go back that bush dey find gun and iegbo(which gun again). Na so one of them talk say make dem kill me say dem nor fit go empty handed. Your father yansh! I hold d gun dey beg them say na hostel I dey go say na read I been dey read. "leave this gun now. I go damage your face oh". for my mind, I dey tell am say "re-structure my face instead. This bullet no go touch me". After them don search me finish. One of them co.me tell me say make I open my bag. Na 2 advanced engineering maths textbook(ka stroud & hk dass) with one notebook there. My guy co.me open d note like say him sabi anything there. As my guy see wicked maths wey I don solve, him co.me tell d remaining 3 guys "leave the lunatic". Dem co.me drive comot.

I was still on the ground with my legs spread with disbelief. I got up, sprinted home. Wasn't interested in reading that night. As I reached home, I touched the flowers, walls, doors just to be sure I was still alive. I couldn't believe it. Indomie sef don burn(who cares?). I just 'shut down' the stove, wash the pot, took my bath, washed the already dirty smelling trouser. It was already few mins to 12am. Went back to sleep.

2 days later, I found myself in a church . . .

It was a saturday night i didnt want to spend the night in the barracks so i left for festac around 11pm
Around 12 i was still on hold up until i got to agboju by 12:45. Immidiatly i diverted to agboju and festac junction
a police van packed beside shined full light on me, i stopped and covered my eyes with my hand, they came with torch lights
come down come down they shouted. where are you going and where are you coming from? I told them I was coming from ojo barracks
to our house in festac. oooh army children all na thief with their papa gun, they ransacked my car and searched me from head
to toe. After everything they told me am coming with them, I asked for what? they said okay settle us, I said I dont even have
a dine on me. while i was talking a military lorry filled with rankless soldiers was passing slowly because of the hold up. I pointed
at them and pointed my car, to my suprise many recongnised the car, a peogeot 206 blue color shared to all army officers. Three of them
jumped from the moving lorry and came to tell the police that is general XXXXX son. I was so suprise to hear the police say they asked me to go
since I was only here on my own. I left but couldnt sleep well that night.
