you are a pathological liar....
the journalist said so even before the competition kicked off & england lost many important players before the mundial to injury. if rio was fit, upton wouldn't make the squad. carrick was missing too & many more i cannot remember. how does that even look like the typical english team to you?

you lie too much to be taken seriously....

The typical English excuse again Injuries

in 2010 Germany lost their best player to Injury just before the tournament
In 2014 Germany Germany lost their best player to injury before the tournament

To be fair this debate can't be sorted until people's definitions of DM are harmonized. If a DM is defined then we can decide who was the best that ever did it

When I asked coogar to define the DM role, here was his reply:

coogar:

makelele = DM
any other player in this day & age lying to you he's a DM or being described as DM and yet bombs forward to serve other general purposes isn't a DM, he's a CM.

as a DM, you just sit there & babysit your centre-halves. this is why claude is great. asking every player to play outside their comfort zone is what is ruining football these days. you now have non-specialists - jack of all trades, master of none.

My counter:

Airbornelacer:

I knew you'd say this.

If I were to ask you who a CB is, you'd probably tell me that ''He's someone who is presented with a simple duty - To defend''.

It doesn't work that way, not anymore. Just like CBs are seen scoring goals for fun these days, DMs are expected to maraude upfield, score goals, dictate the tempo of the game and grab assists. Anyone who simply babysits the backfour all in the name of carrying out the primary function of a DM lacks some skills - It's a fact!

Now let me take you through the words of Patrick Viera on what is required of a 'Complete DM':

www.performance.fourfourtwo.com/pro-tips/patrick-vieira-how-to-be-a-midfield-destroyer

I now expect you to agree with our assertion that Claude Makelele possessed limited skillset.

Excerpt from the article I provided him - the views of Patrick Viera on who a Defensive Midfielder is:

“The first step to playing as a defensive midfielder is understanding your role and accepting it. You're there to work hard and to help everyone else, before yourself.

The role of the defensive midfielder has changed. In the past it was just about protecting the back four [Coogar's assertion], but now you're expected to do everything: [Guapo's assertion] Score goals, make assists and defend.

Your team-mates need to be able to count on you. And when you're having a bad game you need to know they've got your back. This kind of trust gives you confidence.”

Both variants of the DM still exist today in the pivot.

One sits back, one bombs forward

So I think you are both right

You know the answer. Mikel is technically gifted. He's just slow, can't defend and has no place in our debate.

It's like we discussing Ribery, Robben and Ronaldo and you asking me whether Joe Cole is limited. Where does Joe Cole come into şuch debate, even if he is not technically limited?

It's a phucking analogy for christ sake no one is comparing Mikel's technique to Maka's.

Just like I said days ago, Mikel once possessed superb skillset. He scored goals, he assisted, he dictated the pace of the game - he knew when to slow the tempo of the game and when to increase it. He was a delight to watch some phucking years back that Blatter had to recognise him as the second best player at the U-20 World Cup after Lionel Messi.

He moved to Chelsea and got deployed to the DM position. His skillset that won him accolades and ofcourse a silver ball at the FIFA Junior World Cup got limited - he became uber-puck.

If Makalele just like Mikel once or even at the time of playing for us possessed admirable skillset but never put them to good use, wouldn't you agree that he was limited?

You're mistaking ''limited skillset'' for ''ineptitude''. No one is taking anything away from Claude here, he must have been good at step-overs, long range crosses, solo runs etc but for the fact that he never put them to good use while at Chelsea defines his limitations.

And please, don't you ever accuse me of kicking against Cesc's signing on the ground that we have Oscar. I kicked against his signing then cos he's been used more as an attacker at Barca and could find it pretty hard to fit into the midfield again - those were just fears of mine that have been put to bed this season. I had that argument with Lalaboy, you're not in the best of position to drop a word on it.

I dont eulogise Ramires' technique - he's technically inept, I only asserted that he's a valuable asset whose versatility would be of immense help for us on some occasions hence keeping him makes sense.

My view on Oscar was that he could replace Lampard if the latter retires. Prior to his signing, the Brazilian was simply amazing and possessed the potentials that could see him replace Lampard. I never for once at any time or on any thread claim that Oscar was better than Lampard. This issue came up last year or so, you can dig them up if you wish.

I understand what midfield play is cos I'm an amatuer soccer player who has been taken through the basic details in football {all thanks to Jorge Santos - my Academy handler}.

Dont you ever accuse me of ish I dont know.

Your views are your views and my views are my views. Logic has made it possible that we can argue on a particular issue whilst presenting diverging opinions. Yours can only be accepted if you've proven beyond every reasonable doubt that they are true.

I have a huge respect and admiration for you and some other vets on this board - I wish it remains that way.

Of course we were both right but coog thought otherwise.

He and some other vets here were of the view that when a DM bombs forward, he's a CM!

They felt that sitting deep and babysitting the defense line was the only way to play as a defensive midfielder.

Every man to his style. I prefer a mobile ninja like Redondo to be manning my No4. He brings a lot of options to the table.

Negro I'm starting to believe you were not really watching football when Makelele was playing.

You definitely weren't watching football when Deschamps and Dunga were playing.

Cos I would have said you have logic to your argument had you not named Dunga and Deschamps among the greats. Ninjas who were technically nowhere near Makelele.

And you DEFINITELY weren't watching football when Redondo was playing, to name Redondo who scored much less goals than Makelele as a box to box midfielder.

In Redondos day, if he ran to the opponents box, it would take him 3 minutes to return to his own box. I know, na dat Manyoo vs Real Madrid match dey confuse you. You are not a football watcher.

Why should Makelele run box to box when he is controlling a defence that concedes 13 goals in a season. I repeat - that's 13 goals in 38 matches - or one goal conceded every 3 matches. You must be on crack!!!

I'll be damned before I take lectures on midfield play from your kind. You only see midfielders when they start to dribble, that's why midfielders like Oscar look like Jesus to you. Negro, I will spot the quality or lack thereof in a midfielder in 20 mins that will take you half a season to recognise.

Dunga ko! Deschamps ni!

Thís negro forgot Deschamps was exactly the same age as Makelele was when Deschamps came to Chelsea. Both came to Chelsea at age 30. Abeg who here was a Chelsea fan back then? They should come and report.
