Why The Privatisation Of Phcn Might Fail! by barnaby04(m): 11:17am On Jul 07, 2012
The much awaited reform in the power sector through the privatisation of the PHCN might not see the light of day based on the unclear motives of Govt on the issue of payment of severance packages 2 all staff. The PHCN labor unions are spoiling for a show down with Govt if what happened to all NITEL staff whereby they were disengaged without any benefit after many years of service is attempted with dis privatisation process.

They will get their severance package and the privatization will be concluded in earnest... This govt can't afford to joke with an issue as this cause power remains a foremost priority... Encourage the govt to succeed

Well, shouldn't that be part of the acquisition cost? Truth be told, the govt should pay these folks off let the new reforms kick in. I want electricity to be in abundance so key developments can start.

If una papa dey for PHCN and was laid-off without any compensation, shey hunger no go kill una? I guess we shd face the reality, the power problems we are facing in the country is not caused by the staff, rather thru long years of neglect and govt inconsistent policies which killed the sector or can u give what u don't have? For dis reform to scale thru, Govt must pay all the staff what they are due or else, the privatisation will not see the light of the day cos the PHCN labor unions is among the most strongest and organised in the country. The choice is urs, pay them or u lose out!

. They don't deserve gratuity when u were the one that recruited them?. For ur information they have a binding contract with the Govt which has to be honoured in this case or else, it will amount to chasing shadows!

Re: Why The Privatisation Of Phcn Might Fail! by barnaby04(m): 4:47pm On Jul 08, 2012
You guys have all responded well but you guys shd note that their are laws governing employment and termination ofappointment. When you want to disengage your staff, you can't just throw him/her out cos he is a stakeholder in the company. I can sure bet wit u that if the staff are not given what they are due, the reform will fail. The Govt has a choice, make the whole process and pay the workers what they are due or you risked an unexpected revolt from the workers union cos they all have a valid contract of employment which cannot be jettison any how!

To answer this question, its best to know which nation has embarked on privatizin their energy sector.

I honstly dont understand why PHCN staff are worried about thier future? Who else will be employed into the private companies? Who else has the necessary and requisite skills to work in the new companies? They cant possibly bring in an entire company of foreigners!
Re: Why The Privatisation Of Phcn Might Fail! by barnaby04(m): 8:45pm On Jul 08, 2012
Point of correction house; No staff of PHCN is against the privatisation of the sector cos everyone is really looking fwd to it but wat the workers are against is the sellin of the sector to di croonies and brief case investors. I believe Prof Barth Nnaji wuld hv assured GEJ dat he can privatise the sector without payin d workers a dime wich has back fired on them and makin dem non-committal oñ the severance päckage payment!
