Politics / PDP G5 Governors Will Back Tinubu In 2027 – Ortom by DONSMITH123(m): 11:47am On Apr 19
A former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has said that the G5 governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would replicate support for President Bola Tinubu’s candidacy in 2027 if he decided to seek re-election

Mr Ortom stated this on Sunday during a New Year luncheon hosted by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in Rivers State.

Members of the G5 governors are Mr Ortom, Mr Wike, former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, and the Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

While four of the governors completed their second term in May 2023, Mr Makinde, who was the only first-time governor at the time, was re-elected in the 18 March governorship election.

The group led by Mr Wike refused to back the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the February 2023 election due to the party’s refusal to remove its National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to ensure balance in its leadership.

It had canvassed the emergence of a Southerner as the national chairman of the party since both Mr Ayu and Atiku are both northerners.

Mr Ortom said the G5 had no regrets supporting Mr Tinubu in last year’s election and would back him for a second term.

“If we work to ensure Bola Ahmed succeeds, there will be tomorrow for anybody to even contest the election at all.

“Our leader, Nyesom Wike, has already made a declaration that in 2027, we are supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We have nowhere to go because that is what Nigerians believe. Even the past administration that took Nigeria from top to bottom, we allowed them to work for eight years.

“So, why can’t a seasoned administrator in the person of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rule us for eight years,” the former Benue governor said.

Mr Ortom assured that President Tinubu would address the economy, security, and other major challenges facing Nigerians.

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, has appealed to traders of to reduce the cost of foodstuffs and other goods to enable the masses to observe Ramadan with relative ease.

The royal father made the call on Sunday in Zaria during the lunch of a book titled “Dauloli a Kasar Hausa,” meaning ‘Kingdoms in Hausaland, by Prof. Sa’idu-Mohammed Gusau.

Ado-Bayero also advised wealthy Nigerians to help the less privileged during Ramadan.

He also prayed that God Almighty protect the lives of the people so they could witness the sacred month in sound health and accept the prayers and sacrifices.

The emir commended the publisher of the book for providing details on the Hausa kingdoms in Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Zazzau, among others.

“They offerred clear explanation on the administrative system of governance deployed by each kingdom; their trades, norms and values,” he said.

The book reviewer, Prof. Ahmed Zaria of Kaduna State University, said that the 356-page book has seven chapters.

Zaria said the book provides a clear narrative and history of the Hausa kingdoms, their politics, administration, norms, and values from their inception to date.

He added that the book is a must-have copy for students and researchers in linguistics and history.

The Don, who advised academics not to relent in research activities, lamented that some academics, upon reaching the professorial cadre, abandoned research.

The publisher, Prof. Gusau, said the book was an attempt to harmonise the written history of the Hausa Kingdoms adding that most of the research at the universities was on a few kingdoms and not all.

Gusau added that the book is also an attempt to support harmony and strengthen unity among the Hausa kingdoms and other Nigerians.

Politics / Reps Drop Bill Making Varsity Degree Minimum Qualification For President by DONSMITH123(m): 3:09pm On Feb 13
A bill for an Act seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to change the educational qualification for elections into certain political offices, has been stepped down by the leave of the House of Representatives.

Standing in the name of Adewunmi Onanuga, the proposed legislation aimed at pegging minimum qualification for elections into the governorship, presidential, and other key elective offices in the country.

Leading the debate during plenary session on Tuesday, Onanuga, who represents Ikenne/Salami/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State, argued that the constitution of Nigeria 1999 should be amended to make it compulsory for elective office holders to have a University degree or its equivalent as against the current provision which allows a First School Leaving Certificate holder to vie for the highest office in the land.

Although, the bill enjoyed support from House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, Babajimi Benson, Kingsley Chinda and a host of other lawmakers; Aliyu Madaki, a lawmaker from Kano State and Ahmadu Jaha (APC, Borno) and some others kicked against proposed alteration.

A disappointed Onanuga stepped down the bill, pledging to lobby more of her colleagues preparatory to having it presented on the floor of the House at a later date.

“It appears some of our colleagues need further lobbying. I will move to step down the bill for now,” she said.

Celebrities / Mohbad Died Without A Will, Says Management by DONSMITH123(m): 2:40pm On Jan 15
The management of the late Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has debunked claims that the singer left behind a will.

The management noted that the artist died without writing a will on how his assets should be distributed.

Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, in a recent interview with TVC, claimed that he discovered his son had a will.

In the interview Joseph Aloba said, “I was so shocked when I heard that the 26 years had a will. As a father, I do not have something like that. I’ve never thought of writing my will.

“26-year-old boy was writing a will. Which is capital no! So they had to collaborate with the lawyer to put his hands into many things that are not right.”

Aloba also claimed that the will had a thumbprint and not a signature, alleging that the thumbprints were done after the singer’s death.

He said, “Mohbad is the kind of person that will never think of using his hand to thumbprint. Instead of that, he will sign. Because he was dead, they had to call a lawyer to do their own mathematics inside.

“I did not believe that. He cannot thumbprint, he is supposed to sign. I as his father cannot even say I want to thumbprint. I have my signature, he has his signature too. Simply because they cannot trace him, they had to use his hand to thumbprint many things there.”

However, reacting in a statement shared via the late singer’s Instagram page on Monday, his management debunked the claim describing it as “false and misleading”.

The statement partly read, “We would like to use this opportunity to share a few updates and highlight certain truths so that misconceptions and miscommunication do not persist.

“1. The Police Authorities have conducted an investigation and have communicated that the autopsy results from samples sent abroad will take a couple of months before they are shared.

“2. No member of Mohbad’s management or his lawyer has communicated the existence of a will or any such thumb-printed document (as has recently been FALSELY reported) to any member of the family or the public.

We would like to state with certainty that if any such document did exist, it would have been duly registered with the Probate Registry. We, therefore, plead with everyone to refrain from sharing false and misleading statements like this.

“3. All accounts owned and controlled by Imole during his lifetime were immediately put on a Post No Debit order on the 12th of September 2023. This order remains valid till date. These accounts will be properly handed over to the family upon resolution of the internal dispute.”

Politics / Gunmen Assassinate Chief Abiodun Folarin In Ogun by DONSMITH123(m): 2:05pm On Jan 09
The Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday confirmed the assassination of Bashorun Akarigbo, Sagamu, Chief Abiodun Folarin on Monday night.

The three assailants who came in a Toyota Camry car were said to have stormed the Itunsokun, Sagamu residence of the popular traditional chief at around 10:45pm on Monday.

The hoodlums were said to have shot into the air to scare the people away after which they went straight after their target, shot him dead, and left the scene without taking anything away.

The deceased was also said to be the Baasegun of Itunsokun community, Sagamu, and had since been buried on Tuesday, according to Islamic rites.

Confirming the killing to our correspondent, the Spokesperson of Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, said, “The incident happened on Monday night at about 10:45pm at Itunsokun residence of the deceased. The victim’s name is Bashorun Abiodun Folarin. He is said to be the Bashorun Akarigbo.

“Three gunmen were said to have come in a Toyota Camry car, shot into the air to disperse the people and then went to shoot dead the deceased who was said to be sitting at that moment.

This is a case of suspected murder or assassination because the unknown gunmen did not take anything away. At the scene of the crime, two expended cartridges were recovered. The deceased being a Muslim who was assassinated on Monday had been buried.

“The truth is that the culprits will soon be brought to book. The police have swung into action. The Sagamu Area Commander has started an investigation on the matter and very soon those responsible for this heinous crime will be brought to justice.”

The news of the killing of the traditional chief was said to have raised tension in the town as some residents feared that he might have been allegedly killed by some marauding cultists disturbing the peace of the the community for some time.

A resident of the community disclosed that the cultists might have decided to eliminate him because of his involvement in the recent move of the town against the menace of cultism which is already giving the town a bad name.

Two traditional rulers who never wanted their names in print also spoke to our Correspondent over the killing expressing their sadness and frustration.

One of the monarchs said, “The information is correct but I don’t have much information about the incident. We heard that the chief who is a popular traditional chief and member of Akarigbo in council was killed last night. He is popularly called Baasegun, we however can’t say these are the people who did this terrible acts. We leave the police and other security agencies to do their job”

A staff of Sagamu Local Government, who pleaded anonymity, said that the incident also made the LG workers to hurriedly shut down for the day to avoid being caught in any act of violence which the grievous killing could cause.

The source said, “Already, tension is very high in the town as I speak to you, workers are already moving out of the local government secretariat to avoid being caught in any form of crisis. Many are saying the man was killed by cultists but no one could really confirm this, the information is still scanty now.”

Sports / Sebastian Broderick Is Dead by DONSMITH123(m): 12:04pm On Jan 03
Sebastine Brodericks-Imasuen, who led the Golden Eaglets to win the inaugural U-17 World Cup in 1985 is dead.

PUNCH reports that the late Nigerian coach was on life support at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for over a year.

Brodericks-Imasuen, 85, had been diagnosed with Ischemic stroke in December 2022 and had been receiving treatment before he took his last breath, our correspondent gathered.

Ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks or narrows an artery leading to the brain.

The blood clot often forms in arteries damaged by the buildup of plaques (atherosclerosis).

One of the players Brodericks-Imasuen trained at the 1989 U17 World Cup in Scotland, Bamidele Oguntuashe, first broke the news before another confirmation came from Harrison Jalla, the Chairman, of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria Task Force through a WhatsApp post.

Jalla quoted family sources for the death of the iconic coach who had been bed-ridden for some months now.

He reportedly suffered from a stroke and diabetes.

The late coach was one of the football players who represented Nigeria at the Mexico Olympic Games in 1968 and famously scored from a free kick to win the then Challenge Cup for Bendel Insurance in 1972.

As a coach, he was the head of a three-man crew that included Bala Shamaki and Christian Chukwu when the Nigerian team shocked the world in China in 1985.

He led the team again in 1987 to Canada and got to the final before losing through a penalty shoot-out to the then-Soviet Union.

At the third attempt in the competition, his team lost to Saudi Arabia by a penalty kick in the quarter-finals.

At another time, he was the assistant to Clemens Westerhof in the Super Eagles.

He began his football career in 1956 when as a student, he featured for the Onitsha team in the Challenge Cup.

In 1962, he joined the then ECN and was part of the Challenge Cup winning side of 1965.

He was invited to the national team in 1962 but only became a regular in the build-up to the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.

He was noted for his curving shots, especially from free-kick situations.

Popularly called ‘Sabara’, his biggest moment as a club player was when he scored the winning goal in the 3-2 victory for Bendel Insurance in the replay of the 1972 Challenge Cup with Mighty Jets of Jos at the Liberty Stadium – the first time the national cup final was held outside Lagos.

He later became a coach and handled the Midwest junior side to win a gold medal at the inaugural National Sports Festival in 1973.

National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has approved a three-week break for staff working in the national headquarters of the party to celebrate the Christmas and New Year holidays.

This was contained in a circular pasted at the entrance of the party secretariat in Abuja by the APC Director of Administration, Prof A. A. Adediwura.

The announcement comes two days after Ganduje participated in the official public launch of a new book, ‘APC and Transition Politics’ authored by fiery APC chieftain Malam Salihu Lukman, in Abuja.

In the memo titled ‘End of the Year break’, Adediwura disclosed that the 19 days break, which commenced on Wednesday, was to enable a safe passage for workers who are travelling out of the Federal Capital Territory for the holiday.

The party, however, noted there may be instances where some staff may be recalled when the need arises.

The circular read, “This is to inform all staff that the secretariat will be partially closed at the end of work on Wednesday, 20th December, for end of the year break to enable those who have scheduled traveling arrangements to embark on same with ease.

“The secretariat will reopen on January 8, 2024, when normal activities resume. Please note that in between this period, some selected staff will be contacted and engaged in skeletal activities accordingly.

Politics / NANS Commends Tinubu For Approving Reduction In Transport Fare by DONSMITH123(m): 9:25am On Dec 21, 2023
The National Association of Nigerian Students has lauded President Bola Tinubu for the 2023 Yuletide season transport discount.

The President of NANS, Mr. Pedro Obi, gave the commendation in a statement issued on Wednesday in Enugu while appreciating Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.

The Federal Government, through the Chairman, Inter-ministerial Committee on the Presidential Intervention on Public Transportation, Dele Alake, announced plans to subsidise all luxury buses for ease of transportation for citizens willing to travel this festive holidays.

Obi said that the decision demonstrated Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians and showcased a proactive step towards alleviating the burdens being faced by travellers.

He said, “This discount undoubtedly eases the financial strain on many Nigerians, making it more feasible for them to reunite with loved ones and partake in the festivities.

“However, while appreciating this thoughtful gesture, NANS, in its advocacy for students’ welfare, encourages President Tinubu to consider extending this generosity further to students across the nation.

“Recognising the financial challenges faced by students, especially during the holiday season, NANS urges President Tinubu to further alleviate the burden by offering free transport for students who can be identified with their student identity cards.”

Obi said NANS understood the importance of supporting the educational pursuits of Nigerian students and firmly believes that such an extension of the transport discount to students would significantly alleviate their financial challenges.

He said this would enable them (students) to travel to their various homes without undue financial constraints.

“NANS remains committed to advocating for the welfare and interests of Nigerian students and eagerly anticipates further positive actions that prioritise the well-being of the nation’s students and youths,” he said.

Alake, who is also Minister of Solid Minerals Development, said that Tinubu’s approval of a 50 per cent cut in land transportation fares last from December 21 to January 4, 2024, across the country, covering Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Alake said the president had also approved zero fares for train transportation in all the states across the Federation within the same period, adding that “this presidential initiative is to give succour to the masses.”

The minister, who disclosed this while briefing journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said that all the logistics for the implementation had been worked out between the minister of transportation, the transport unions and luxury bus owners.

Nineteen unions have so far directed their workers to comply with the directive of the two labour unions to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike.
The PUNCH reports that the National Executive Council meeting of the labour unions, held on November 13, 2023, in Abuja, resolved to embark on the strike.
The development was a result of the alleged failure of the Federal Government to address issues affecting workers, such as the minimum wage, insecurity, corruption, and poor governance.
Also, unions had made some demands, which the government had allegedly failed to address following the recent crisis in Imo that resulted in the alleged brutalisation of the NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, and other members of the labour unions. Some of the unions that have complied with the directives include,
1. The Academic Staff Union of Universities.
2. The Senior Staff Associations of Nigerian Universities.

This was contained in a letter which was signed by ASUU’s National President, Emmanuel Osodeke, was issued on Monday night.
The letter read, “The Nigeria Labour Congress at a Joint National Executive Council of NLC and TUC directed all affiliate unions to commence the withdrawal of services with effect from 12 midnight today November 13, 2023.

Also, the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees directed its staff to join the strike, saying, “We hereby direct all our members in all Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions to stay off duty as from 14th November 2023 until otherwise directed by the Congress.”

Education / ASUU Rejects Curriculum Designed By NUC by DONSMITH123(m): 2:59pm On Jun 30, 2023
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has rejected the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards prepared by the National Universities Commission.

The union said it was nightmarish, a threat to quality university education, and an erosion of powers of the university Senate in Nigerian universities.

A statement signed by the national president of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, on Friday, explained that it was inexplicable that NUC pre-packaged 70 per cent CCMAS contents were being imposed on the Nigerian University System, adding that university Senates, who are statutorily responsible for academic programme development, were left to work on only 30 per cent.

It stressed that there were growing concerns about the numerous shortcomings and gross inadequacies of the CCMAS documents.

“ASUU is not unaware that setting academic standards and assuring quality in the NUS is within the remit of the NUC. Section 10(1) of the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act, Cap E3, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, enjoins the NUC to lay down the minimum standards for all universities and other degree awarding institutions in the Federation and conduct the accreditation of their degrees and other academic awards.

“However, the process of generating the standard is as important (if not more important) than what is produced as “minimum standards”.

“In this instance, the NUC has recently, through some hazy procedures, churned out CCMAS documents containing 70% curricular contents in 17 academic fields with little or no input from the universities. The academic disciplines covered are (i) Administration and Management, (ii) Agriculture, (iii) Allied Health Sciences, (iv) Architecture, (v) Arts, (vi) Basic Medical Sciences, (vii) Computing, (viii) Communication and Media Studies, (ix) Education, (x) Engineering and Technology, (xi) Environmental Sciences, (xii) Law, (xiii) Medicine and Dentistry, (xiv) Pharmaceutical Science, (xv) Sciences, (xvi) Social Sciences, and (xvii) Veterinary Medicine,” it read partly.

It stressed that many university administrators, though dissatisfied, were shying away from making public comments on CCMAS.

The statement revealed that, however, some university Senates did not hide their displeasure with the ongoing efforts to impose CCMAS on Nigerian universities by the NUC.

It read, “The CCMAS is a nightmarish model of curriculum reengineering. It is an aberration to the Nigerian University System. The CCMAS documents are flawed both in process and in content. There is no basis for the 70% “untouchable CCMAS,” which cannot stand the test of critical scrutiny of university Senates.”

However, it suggested that “NUC should encourage universities, as currently being done by the University of Ibadan, to propose innovations for the review of their programmes. Proposals from across universities should then be sieved and synthesised by more competent expert teams to review the existing BMAS documents and/or create new ones as appropriate.

“The difference here is the bottom-up approach, unlike the top-bottom or take-it-or-leave-it model of the CCMAS.”

Politics / Breaking: FG Amends Charge Against Kanu, Lists His Lawyers As Accomplices by DONSMITH123(m): 10:01am On May 18, 2022
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri

ABUJA–The Federal Government is set to re-arraign the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, on an amended six-count treasonable felony charge.

The amendment came on a day trial Justice Binta Nyako fixed to hear an application Kanu filed to be released on bail, pending the determination of the charge against him.

A member of Kanu’s legal team, who craved anonymity, told Vanguard on Wednesday that FG had in the amended charge, listed some lawyers representing the embattled IPOB leader, including Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor and Mr. Maxwell Opara, as accomplices of the defendant.
FG, it was gathered, alleged that the said lawyers, were constantly in contact with Kanu, after he jumped bail and fled the country.

It will be recalled that Kanu was subsequently re-arrested and returned back to the country from Kenya, in controversial circumstance.

Trial Justice Binta Nyako had on April 8, struck out eight out of the 15-count treasonable felony charge FG preferred against Kanu.

Justice Nyako held that the charges were mere repetitions that did not disclose any offence that could be sustained by the proof of evidence before the court.

FG had in the counts that were struck out, alleged that Kanu had through his broadcasts, incited members of the public to not only stage a violent revolution, but to attack police officers and also destroy public facilities in Lagos State.

While the court threw out counts 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12,13 and 14 of the charge, it okayed Kanu’s trial on counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15.

The ruling followed an application Kanu filed to quash the entire charge against him, which he insisted was manifestly incompetent and legally defective.

The IPOB leader, through his team of lawyers led by Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), argued that the court lacked the jurisdiction to try him on the strenght of an incompetent charge.

Ozekhome (SAN), further told the court that his client was “unlawfully, brutally and extraordinarily renditioned from Kenya without his consent”.

He argued that since some of the allegations FG levelled against Kanu, were purportedly committed outside the country, the high court, therefore, lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the charge.

“The charges appears to give this court a global jurisdiction over offences that were allegedly committed by the Defendant, without specifying the location or date the said offences were committed”.

He argued that under the Federal High Court Act, such charge must disclose specific location where the offence was committed.

More so, Ozekhome contended that Kanu could not be charged with belonging to an unlawful organization since the action of FG, in proscribing the IPOB, is still subject of legal dispute at the Court of Appeal and therefore subjudice.

Consequently, he urged the court to dismiss the charge, as well as to discharge and acquit the defendant.

However, FG’s lawyer, Mr. Shuaibu Labaran, opposed the application and urged the court to allow the prosecution to open its case.

He argued that Kanu’s application would touch the substance of the case that is yet to be heard.

“The position as at now is that the IPOB is a proscribed organization which was duly proscribed through the due process of law”.

He argued that Section 32 of the Terrorism Prevention Act imbued the court with the requisite jurisdiction to handle the trial.

On Kanu’s bail request, Ozekhome, maintained that the amended charge contained bailable offences, while FG’s lawyer, Labaran, argued that the defendant betrayed the previous discretion the court exercised in his favour when he jumped bail and escaped from the country.

He argued that it was owing to Kanu’s conduct that the court revoked his bail and issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

FG had in some of the charges that were sustained by the court, alleged that Kanu had in his broadcast that was received and heard in Nigeria, issued a deadly threat that anyone who flouted his sit-at home order, should write his/her Will.

It told the court that as a result of the threat, Banks, Schools, Markets, Shopping Malls, Fuel Stations domiciled in the Eastern States of Nigeria, were not opened for businesses, citizens and vehicular movements in the Eastern States of Nigeria were grounded.

It alleged that Kau had on diverse dates between 2018 and 2021, made a broadcast received and heard in Nigeria, inciting members of the public to hunt and kill Nigerian security personnel and their family members, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 1 (2) (h) of the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act, 2013.

While FG, in count-8, alleged that Kanu, directed members of the IPOB “to manufacture Bombs”, it told the court in count-15 that the defendant had between the month of March and April 2015, “Imported into Nigeria and kept in Ubulisiuzor in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, a Radio Transmitter known as Tram 50L concealed in a container of used household items which you declared as used household items, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 47 (2) (a) of Criminal Code Act Cap, C45 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004”.
