Kano State Governor Declares Free & Compulsory Education in the State

The Kano state Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has declared free and compulsory education in the state commencing from the 2014 academic year.

He made the declaration during the presentation of 2014 appropriation bill to the House of Assembly.

According to Vanguard, Kwankwaso stated that “in our collective resolve to drive a knowledge base economy, government has already concluded arrangement to adopt a free education for all indigene at all levels: primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.”

The Governor added that “this is in addition to sponsoring of Kano indigenes to pursue their various degree programmes locally and internationally”, pointing out that the commencement of the free education for all Kano state indigenes from primary, secondary and tertiary institutions starting from the new academic session in 2014.”

In order to ensure effective implementation of the new programme, the Education sector got the largest share of the sectoral allocation with over N20billion with Ministry of Education N15.22billion; while its ministry for Higher Education counterpart got N5.61billion.

This is a laudable move. The education sector needs to be well funded not just in Kano state but in all states of the country. We hope this policy would be sustainable and result in a better future for the children resident in the state.

He gave the charge during his visit to the institution as part of his programme to develop education in Kano State.

Assuring that the institution will not relent in this direction, Ajibola said that his university has been able to propagate educational cohesion between the North and South of Nigeria.

Vice Chancellor of the faith based institution, Professor Kehinde Okeleye expressed deep appreciation to governor for the sponsorship of 200 students in various degree programmes and reported that the students’ academic performance to date was good.

But I am disappointed that after trying the lines of Dr. Rueben Abati, Media adviser to the president, he has not picked his call to know why I am calling.

“The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku picked, promised some assistance, but my wife has been literally spending days and nights at his office to reach him all without success. I also wrote the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) who also has not deemed it proper to respond. I wrote and dispatched all the letters on September 3, and till now I am talking to you, no assistance. This really discourages and makes those genuinely fighting for a better society to grow cold in their effort.

Can you imagine that I even called Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president and he told me that he is no longer in power and can’t do anything for me. I have done as much as calling the lines of President Jonathan I have and none of them has been through. So, I am still surprised that those of us that canvass for a better society by ensuring that someone that has been doing well should continue in office would be left unattended in such calamity that befell us. It doesn’t speak good of our attitude to nation building.”

And these are the people you jokers are willing to terminate your life for? Very pathetic..

Politics / Fashola Lambast Jonathan Over Chibok Girls Rescue by EkoIle1: 12:29am On Sep 10, 2014
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to find a way on how to rescue the abducted female students of Government Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, saying the bulk stops at the President’s table.

He also revealed how he was able to fix Lagos State in spite of the gloomy picture he faced at the inception of his administration.

Fashola spoke on Tuesday in Abuja during a political debate organised by the Kukah Center entitled ‘Both Sides’, a political debate featuring him and his Jigawa State counterpart, Alhaji Sule Lamido, with the theme, ‘The Nuts and Bolts’.

He said, “I will give to the President a very honest and brutal advice that I have continued to offer to him; I have done this consistently even by telephone or by letters and I will continue to offer that advice.

On national security, I don’t have the briefing that the President gets and that is why I have always said that the easiest thing to do is to criticise. Do you have the facts that are at his disposal? Because it is only then that we can have a very serious disagreement.

“As far as sincerity about Chibok girls is concerned, honestly, let me just say that the problem that Chibok symbolises has assumed a dimension that is ordinarily outside the authority and control of government. It is now a matter of insurgency and therefore, the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Armed Forces have only one Commander-in-Chief and that is Mr. President. The bulk stops at his desk on this matter and it cannot be an easy decision.

“The most I am willing to say I can’t measure sincerity, I know it is a tall call now. The Chibok parents are grieving and want their children back. There are many options on the table, but I don’t also think they are expecting body bags of their children, it is a difficult place to be.
“But of course I have always said, issues of this nature may want to provoke a debate about the methods. I am not your Commander-in-Chief, if you want more clarity, you know where to go.”

alekside: Does it mean defense budget is spent on salaries alone? cry

Not only defense budget, 80% of Nigerian's budget is recurrent (Meaning paying salaries and maintaining the government)

The 20% left over is capital for roads, bridges and other infrastructures or for the rest of the country (170 million people) to scramble for.

Even the 20% gets stolen and embezzled and this is the reason why you have poor or non existing infrastructures. There's just no money left to do anything for Nigerians and this is the reason why they borrow everyday to do everything just like GEJ asking to borrow $1 billion to fight Boko Haram.

Nigerians are just too bastardized to read between the lines and ask serious because this man is basically saying he is not doing anything about BH unless we let him borrow $1 billion.

Wives preventing their poorly equipped husbands, sons and brothers from government sanctioned suicide mission is another sad and disheartening chapter we are getting saddled with.

Do you blame the women? Of course not. Sending your fighting men to confront better equipped and motivated sadists and terrorists is criminal and irresponsible....but they don't care
